Server horror

So the forum population here generally agree that 20+ servers become a bit of a cluttered deathmatch ending in horrible server lag.
I have a new horror for you.

That's a 50 player server... I have no words.

I hate to say it, but it looks as if its being hosted on a home FTTC connection, most probably BT Infinity. I could be wrong though and it could be hosted in an office using a 10Mb provided by BT.

Endar had the Monash servers up to a limit of 100 a while back I believe. Didn't lag with 60 people in it or something :O

How do you even fit 60 players in an NS2 map? And 90! 90 is like 10 players per room (5 TP + 4 RT standard size)!

I was there, it lagged. However, you didn't notice it much because it was such a mess.

    I think this is awesome!

Make a special map for bigger player numbers, and you can have an epic huge battle terrain. Why not?

I'm more saddened by the fact that you can get so many green ping 16-20 man servers while I mostly get a handful of 24 man servers :(

Ever see 20 GLs in a single room? Probably not, because you'd be instantly obliterated.

You're right. The lag was terrible, but it was so chaotic that it didn't even matter.

This server now runs 40 player slots....just played a couple of rounds on Aliens, pure chaos, but it was fun XD
Hydra forests, and so many babblers everywhere that their nonstop chatter became hilarious.
Also seen some epic gorge tunnels, and to my surprise they maze they created had some logic to it...our comm deserved respect, for keeping it all under control (at least, he tried lol).

I had no lag or fps problems, but a few players had to leave.
It was a nice change of pace, imo.

that's because ppl don't understand when the large servers constantly spike down to like 5 tics beause they have no clue what good/bad hitreg is or how it affects them. also because spam.

Yeah just played a few games there. It's fun but the rubberbanding was insane. At one point, I teleported like 3-4 times within 10 seconds vs a lerk.

I'd rather stick with the 16-24 player servers though. At least there's no shortage of players once a match is over I guess. Server never fully empties until 75% of the server leaves, you can still have a good match going on < half capacity.

To be fair, it's not as laggy as I was expecting and is almost as good as the 24 player servers. It's only late game heavy combat where it starts to go a bit nuts.

I play on the 32 man Onos Bar server (I am from Aus), it can get a little crazy with the ping (250-350), but it is fun. Plus because the Devs are good enough to encourage mods, they make a mod specific to the way they want to play (insane babblers on crack are awesome!!). As someone above mentioned, yeah the ping sux, and you rubber band a bit due to lag, but its so chaotic sometimes it doesn't matter. I am having fun.

Haha, i knew there would be a topic moaning about it.

    You NS2 purists are predictable!

About time Europe got a big server, US server is always full, can never get in :(

Just played some matches on that Server! Nice try with 40 People! But as soon as 15vs15 are in battle, the tickrate constantly drops to 5-8 for 2-3 secounds, which results in rubberbanding. I have to say, its kinda fun to play 20vs20, but then the "lag" gets horrible!

Never understood why people enjoy large player counts, who the hell wants to be apart of a zerg mentality. Your individual actions have nearly no bearing on the result, you are simply a number and if you mass numbers at the right spot, right time, you win.

Although I suppose for that exact reason of why I dislike it, people will like it. They can submerge themself in the numbers making their failures not stand out

I think I'd be too frustrated by not being able to achieve anything unless in a group of 5 or more people to have any fun :(

You just answered your own question.

I suspect the majority enjoy big games because they are simply less stressful, free of failure and judgement and therefore just more fun to play.

I can't see why big servers and small servers can't peacefully co-exist with each other.
