Drop Shotty

please commander!
Commanders rarely EVER drop shotguns. Why? Shotguns are so powerful and still cheaper than hmgs. You can one shot skulks and 4 shot fades. Please when you're commander drop more shottys and watch all the shotty kills come in!

Yes, I agree. Although the rate of fire is slow, they do heavy damage, and with enough shotties firing at the same time, it can be quite a fearsome site.

Grenade launchers and shotties are the way forward!

if you want to get that close to a fade.. sure, it'll work...

85% chance you'll die if you get swiped..

shotties.. eh.. they can work, but if you miss the first shot. . you probably will die from a skulk

you can't really shoot from far away, as it may not kill them

and if you miss close.. you're doomed

I hand out shotguns when people ask for them, but that's a rare occurence... so I usually don't give any, since in my opinion they take a lot more skill to use than the machineguns, and anyone who can use them to good effect will let me know anyway.

I'm personally a big time shotgun fan (and user) and drop shotguns in conjunction with Jetpacks all the time when I command. For 2 rps more than an HMG, you can get a Jetpack AND shotgun. The firepower of this combo is almost obscene. I had a player who assassinated a single hive AND killed 2 fades and countless skulks, plus a lerk, before dying. All for 29 rps . .
I believe his name was Zero7. If you commanders play with him, hook him up with a shotgun and a jetpack and watch the fun begin.
To conclude. Shotguns are good. Drop them.

most commanders don't drop shotties unless asked...and if asked for one...he'll probably do great with it. if you don't know how to use one...don't ask as the 20 res can be used somewhere else. read the countless shotgun threads and learn.

SIMPLEST DIRECTIONS FOR SG USE:
1) Obtain one, either ask or scavage one from a fallen comrade
2) Make each shot count cause the slow rate of fire will get you killed if your inexperianced
3) aim the coursor directly in the center of the target (alien) and fire...bye bye skulk

I think just dropping weapons so that the marines can pick them up when they spawn is a huge waste.

Marines should ask for a weapon (excessive asking should result in a turret placed on the marine), and if the commander agrees he should give it.

Spamming weapons just wastes resources tbh.

Wierdest thing ever happened. Our commander left us mid game to die, the aliens had 3 hives, we were screwed. No one wanted to be commander, so I thought i'd polish my comm skills a bit more and just mess around. I accidentally bought the whole team HA/Shotties. Once i realized I purchased several shotguns instead of HMGs I sighed, getting ready for the onos assault. Well, my team was atleast all at spawn, HAs with shotties in hand, each of them, so i decided to send them to their deaths, and gave them a waypoint at generator hive. As soon as they leave the front door an onos appears, and as soon as i hear "soldiers under attack" the onos is gone. "They got lucky" i said to myself. The men kept staying together and moving forward, destroying a small aliens outpost, and managed to reach the hive, and destroy everything in it awfully damn quick. I was really really really suprised. I'm ashamed for doubting the shotties power. As long as your troops stick together in a nice group, it's mobile death. My troops were almost to their second hive when a fade finished off my comm chair, I didn't build another one cause I was stupid and tired. I didn't fret tho, our mobile shotty force finished off the 2 other hives rather quickly.

I will hand out shotties if the aliens get fades before I have our upgrades cooking. I never hand them out at the start, no one needs a shotty if the aliens have only one hive. I hate when I see a commander drop a shottie 'for a friend' or some good player at the start of a game. That player will die within minutes, eventually, and those resources are so important at the begining of the game.

Maybe if you give 1 player a shotgun and he sits in the base while the other players leave, instead of building turrets right off the bat.

I never really rated the shotgun, untill I ended up with one by accident, took down 15 skulks and a hive as a light marine whitout dying.

They're BRIIIIIILLLIANT.

Sorry to go back and quote one of my own posts, but I swear by this tactic now, if I have a reliable player on my team who knows what he is doing with the shotty. Having a guard at your base (or any location you want to defend without turrets) is a great thing during the early game. Though it is best to keep a player like this in base, so that should they die, they can quickly retrive the weapon and save resources. If that gun gets lost early in the game, it would be big waste of resources to replace it, in my opinion.

Whenever I'm comm I study each players methods and attitudes when in battle, e.g. if he follows orders, good shooter(gets alot of kills), knows the map I'd more likely give this guy the shotty and not the pain in arse that does nothing but sit there and spam for one.

Whenever I ask for a shotgun, 80% of the time I get an HMG. Commanders don't realize that not everyone likes to be weighed down.

Whoever is in front of a squad should have a shotty, not an HMG (read the new post in "my" thread for details). Shotty can kill anything smaller than a fade instantly, and scares the crap out of them, too. Also, like Flat said, it doesn't weigh a billion pounds.

In groups, the SG is great. If you're the one guy with a jetpack and a hmg attacking ahive(which I usually do), the HMG is better. For all of the ammo and the damage and if you get ambushed, its great GO JETPACKS!

Jetpack + HMG is definitely the ultimate solo setup. Can't kill what you can't catch!

True that may be, but you shouldn't be soloing anyway. If your comm is that dumb, oh well, go beat the **obscenity** out of them

I don't give shotguns. Why?

Because the goofs that ask for them are usually doing so about 1 or 2 minute into the game when we should be taking a hive with phase gates and turrets, not handing out weapons.

By the time I start worrying about handing out weapons we usually have HMG, and who would take a shotgun over a HMG?

If you would, then I'll give you one.

I'll take shotty over HMG anyday. HMGs are expensive n00b guns useful for killing fades and chambers (and Onos, but that should NEVER happen in a good game). Shotties can kill anything short of a fade in 1-2 shots. Besides, they have more style

There's a different between "point-blank" range and "melee" range. You can hit a skulk with the entire shotgun spread before it gets close enough to bite.

I didn't say it wasn't tricky, but after a while, you get used to the "point at what you want to die and click" mentality.
• Error404Error404 Join Date: 2002-11-19 Member: 9353Members
The problem with shottie is that you run out of ammo faster, if you're a commander and you're going to give out shotties, be responsible and also drop ammo, otherwise you'll end up with a load of marines with empty shotties.

I'm a big fan of the boomstick. On the servers I frequent, I usually have at least 1 or 2 guys on my team who are 'regulars' under my command, and I usually drop them shotguns and assign them to 'meat turret' duty in spawn. It's a lot cheaper, and in a lot of cases, more effective than dropping a tfac and a few sentries. Turrets have horrible tracking. Even a good skulk will get dropped by sentries eventually, but that means he's running around in your spawn, raising Cain until the sentries finallly whittle him away to nothingness. On the other hand, a shotgun in the hands of a competant marine, well, it's usually "*BAM* *SPLAT* *Skulk player shouting obscenities over chat* "
• relsanrelsan Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3720Members, Constellation
man all you "dont know how to use a shotgun" people need to get over this "boo hoo waa if i get too close ill die!" attitude. first of all its lighter than an hmg so you move quicker. second STICK AND MOVE! STRAFE! JUMP! i do this all the time to dodge aliens up close and i get in AT LEAST 4 shots with a shotty before they can hit me.

all you need is one good shot to take down a skulk and if you see them coming they are almost as good as dead with a shotty.

fades go down in four shots so you are hardly outmatched. it takes 2-3 acid rockets on light armor for them to kill you so all you have to do is a little fancy footwork.

and onos are slow. sure they run fast in a straight line but they suck at tight turns. just lure them like the matadors do bulls and shoot em when they pass. a lot of onos forget all about paralyze, but if they do paralyze, it doesnt matter what weapon you have does it? no it doesn't, so just get as many shots as you can in if they are charging. i guarantee you will take off a lot of health and you may score that kill if youre in a group.

I refuse to drop a shotgun at the start of the game because NSPlayer is spamming global chat for it.
• relsanrelsan Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3720Members, Constellation
you know, im not even talking about dropping it at the start of the game. im of the mind that i dont need a costly weapon, better armor, or upgrades at the start of the game. this thread isn't about that. if you wanna talk about how marines should act, check out my thread "good marine, lazy, selfish, noob marine".

this is strictly about the choice of weapons, not when you get them. all im saying is that when the time comes to purchase new weapons for your marine team, throw in a few shotguns. just drop a couple on the floor along with the hmgs and see what happens. i think youll find that some savy marines are bound to make good use of them.

didn't someone tested a skull had more than 160 effective health with carapace?
that means no more 1shot skull kills until lv1 weapon upgrades and even then, assuming all of the shots hit

usulaly as a skull it takes 2 shotty shots to kill me, altho the first leaves me on very low life already
