One thing everyone seems to be universally worried about is silly achievements getting in the way of good gameplay. It appears to be mostly concern of newbs coming in and trying to do stupid things just for the achievements, so what if you had a set of achievements that would only become available for unlocking after completing a certain percent, say 70, of the others? Perhaps not even silly, so much as very dangerous and not particularly sensible, things like knifing/axing an onos. They could also be unlockable but not viewable, until you'd completed a certain number of normal achievements as well. Eventually they'd get posted online somewhere, and there would be a few people trying to get them just by guessing if you took this route, but hopefully most people would just do the normal ones and play the game the way it's meant to be played. Definitely should have some ridiculous achievements somewhere though, if done properly it would be a lot of fun. I like the one someone suggested where you get out of the command chair and take down the hive without dying, and could definitely see some idiot trying that for the hell of it, but I'd put up with it for the chance to get that achieve myself.

I really think this achievement setup for alpha is more like a test run for the feature in Steam, and something extra for the preorders as they test it out. As it enters beta or first shipment release it'll probably be wiped and if it has gone well, redo the bulk of them so that they compliment that release of the game.

<b>Confused Lost Soul</b> - Fall from a height less than 5m and die.
<b>You Will Never Be Like Me</b> - Kill 100 special edition marines.
<b>Unibomber</b> - Destroy the most structures on your team in a round.
<b>At Least I have Chicken</b> - Get the least points on your team in a round.
<b>Must Be Good</b> - Kill the most gorges on your team in a round.
<b>What</b> - Kill a marine while s/he's trying to weld something.
<b>Stranger Danger</b> - Bite a marine in the ass resulting in his/her death.

I'd like to see some achievements that actually feel like achievements. Something that, after you do it, you just kind of stare blankly at your screen exclaiming "I can't believe that just f'n happened" - then you get this shiny award thing pop up for it.
What I don't want to see is really dull, boring achievements ... I mean - not to point out achievements that I think are 'bad', just examples of what I think are boring:
dropping ammo/health packs. <-- You're a commander. Its what you should be doing. Why do you get an achievement for doing what you should already be doing? killing X amount of Y. <-- Again ... thats the entire point of the game, unless its some sort of 'special kill' (like knifing an onos), it seems ... redundant. building X number of Y <-- Should be doing it anyway. Why is that an achievement?
I guess I just want an achievement to actually feel like an achievement. Not just a "You're a special little boy! Here is a gold star!"
I've seen achievements for actually <b>starting games</b> before. I mean .. really? Starting the game is an 'achievement'? Since when?
That being said, I'm not able to bring any examples to the table as to what I would like to see. Just stating what I'd, personaly, like to see done w/ the achievements.

I don't entirely agree. I think having a few "boring" achievements in there won't hurt anything, and they're very easy to program. Sure, they can be kind of "meh", but I really don't see the problem. When I play a game with achievements, I typically earn somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of the total list of achievements just by playing the game normally, so it's nothing we haven't all seen before...
Of course, the unusual/tricky achievements are always best, especially when a) they're funny, and b) you did it without making an explicit effort to get the achievement
and to stay on topic: "Bunny Hopper" - traverse X distance in Y time as a skulk, without using leap "Wait, I'm not ready!" - get a kill with the shotgun in the middle of a reload

the problem with exciting, and rare achievements is that players will do stupid things over and over just to get the badge.
e.g. purposely stand near lava pit with exo suit and full load out, so that an alien can push them in easily. (if there was a badge for aliens pushing you down a pit in exo suit )
getting pushed in would be normally considered rare and suprising, and yes that would be a cool achievement, but not when people start to do it on purpose to the detriment of the game/round.
at the same time you don't want achievements that are just playing the game normally. THat is a "Get x kills, Get Xx kills, get xxx kills". Like you say, whats the point. Thats why i think its really important to have achievements which are team play oriented (and so should be the scoring system).
I may be in the minority here, but I actually enjoy the regular gameplay achievements. It's a little bit silly if <i>all</i> of the achievements are like that. I've played games where all of the achievements where pretty much "Get to this part of the game" and the achievements there became meaningless. However if, scattered throughout the tougher, skill-based achievements, you have some good, long-term, simple achievements, it gives a real sense of progress to the game. Especially one like this where most people will find a set of 5 or so popular maps and just play those. After a while, that gets a little bit boring. However, if you add in something like "Kill 10,000 Marines", the game stays fresh. You've always got that extra urge to do a little bit better to achieve that ridiculous number of kills.
the thing is you dont need achivevments to show how many kills you have. and it shouldnt necessary be kills either.. back in my day :D one of the more enjoyable stats in AQ2 was being able to see how much damage you have done
I definatly think that the scoring system has to bee team based. so every time you get a kill you get one point, every time you build a building ( that you were told to do) you get 10 points..

All achievements should encourage team play, and not make people 'farm' for them. Make them oddball items, make them quirky things that might happen in play, but don't make them something that will cause teams to lose because they have half their team aiming to get some strange achievement.
Also, secrets! Fine, they'll get spoilered on the Internet 30 seconds after they appear, but have some truly, truly odd ones, and make them ??? until you get them. It'll give some kudos when they're discovered.
<u>Good Example</u> <b>Hovar without flapping</b> - Spend more than x seconds airborne as anything other than Lerk.
<u>Bad Example</u> <b>Hump it!</b> - Spend x seconds (a very high number, one that would only accrue through play) at the armoury. - You'll either get players on custom maps sitting there doing it, or they'll ruin games for other players by basically denying them a team mate whilst they try to farm it.
And for comedy past reference...
<b>"Not enough competitive play experience"</b> - Kill an original Natural Selection Playtester 3 times without their killing you.
You people realize that when you achieve something it has nothing to do with whether or not you get a popup on your screen or an entry on your profile, right?

It's fun to collect stuff while playing video games and completing objectives.
Coins, golden rings, stars, achievements. It's a gamer thing, you may have heard of it.
i giess everything has been decided by now, but here are my ideas, its just a fun thread:
<u>rines </u> <b>the Chuck Norris experience</b> kill an onos single handedly without any extra armor or weapons <b>the name is bond</b> counter an attack by completing a phase gate near the enemy base <b>the good, the bad and the stupid</b> give your gun to a player with a higher score(0/50)

Collecting stuff makes sense in games like RPGs, because collecting stuff is what they're about. Collecting stuff does not make sense forced atop of a totally different type of game just because it's all the rage as of late. If you are that much into collecting stuff I can recommend stamps.

Might want to check out the giant list of quality FPS titles that have achievements. My most recently played being Killing Floor which has a great implementation of achievements.
Is this the part where you people talk about how superior you are for playing Natural Selection over Counter-Strike and how you deserve a pure untainted game for being such educated and enlightened gamers?
Gimme a break.
If you don't like them, don't participate. Find some like-minded players and get your own server. I can't believe you are actually arguing for the removal of purely optional achievements that some like to have.
I think if there are going to be achievements in NS2 then you should think of only the things that would impress people. So people have bragging rights and not just "BOB-LOBLAW has unlocked achievement X!" messages every 30 seconds.

On Neovipers point... You can't hold an achievement as secret on Steam I believe. Something for UWE Devs to bring up to steam to better steam in the future though.
As for comm killing hive... I've probably done it. Ive rage commed enough times now that it doesn't phase me. I wanted to do a comm rages after 2 minutes and gets top kills... But thought about it and it would only ruin gameplay.

I really think this achievement setup for alpha is more like a test run for the feature in Steam, and something extra for the preorders as they test it out. As it enters beta or first shipment release it'll probably be wiped and if it has gone well, redo the bulk of them so that they compliment that release of the game.
(btw I know my achievement names suck, but I'm including them for the sake of Flayra's demands, I love you Flayra)
<b>Happy Meal</b> - Get swallowed but not digested by an onos 3 times in one life.
<b>Desperado</b> - Knife an onos to death.
<b>Moron</b> - Weld an alien to death.
<b>Time To /kill</b> - Fall from a height of at least 50m and survive.
<b>HELL YEAH! I'M GO-</b>- Die within 2 minutes of receiving heavy-suit and miniguns.
<b>Baby Burner</b> - Set 10 eggs on fire within 1 round.
Also, I fully support this:

"GORGE RUSH!!" win the game within 5 minutes with 70% of your team as gorges
"How the lerk stole Christmas": jump down a vertical pipe and kill a marine
"up down up down left right left right b a select start": get killed 30+ times and still get the most kills on your team (in a high player match) logo will be a controller
"Stealth.... failed" hide out of the line of sight of marines but still remain near for X ammount of time and then get grenade launchered from someone who cant see you
"YES!!.. WAIT NO!!!" almost killing blow someone just as the round ends
Moooove over. push 4 marines with an onos charge/swing.
Also, I just remembered there is no knife, there's an axe now.

Of course, the unusual/tricky achievements are always best, especially when a) they're funny, and b) you did it without making an explicit effort to get the achievement
and to stay on topic:
"Bunny Hopper" - traverse X distance in Y time as a skulk, without using leap
"Wait, I'm not ready!" - get a kill with the shotgun in the middle of a reload
e.g. purposely stand near lava pit with exo suit and full load out, so that an alien can push them in easily.
I definatly think that the scoring system has to bee team based. so every time you get a kill you get one point, every time you build a building ( that you were told to do) you get 10 points..
Also, secrets! Fine, they'll get spoilered on the Internet 30 seconds after they appear, but have some truly, truly odd ones, and make them ??? until you get them. It'll give some kudos when they're discovered.
<u>Good Example</u>
<b>Hovar without flapping</b> - Spend more than x seconds airborne as anything other than Lerk.
<u>Bad Example</u>
<b>Hump it!</b> - Spend x seconds (a very high number, one that would only accrue through play) at the armoury.
It's fun to collect stuff while playing video games and completing objectives.
Coins, golden rings, stars, achievements. It's a gamer thing, you may have heard of it.
<u>rines
</u>
<b>the Chuck Norris experience</b> kill an onos single handedly without any extra armor or weapons
<b>the name is bond</b> counter an attack by completing a phase gate near the enemy base
<b>the good, the bad and the stupid</b> give your gun to a player with a higher score(0/50)
Coins, golden rings, stars, achievements. It's a gamer thing, you may have heard of it.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

It's pretty much a discussion about achivements now instead of just the achievemetns.
And of course the corresponding medspam achievements for marine and commander ;)
