    EDIT: Ok, it works if I drop the detail level down to "ridiculously awful". Unfortunately, it still runs pretty choppy on my machine. I guess I will finally have to break down and upgrade my PC. Was pretty high end, say back when HL2 came out, but I guess it's not up to snuff anymore.

    TZ

    Crashes for me when I try to create a game. :(

    It runs at a consistent framerate, just not at the framerate I want. Considering I cannot run oblivion well, I didn't expect NS2 to be any better. However, it runs ok (a little less than 25 fps, it feels) at 1024x768 and utterly awful video settings, but that is playable. i play on an ASUS laptop with a core 2 duo 2.2ghz and an Nvidia 8600mGT with 256 v-ram and 3 gigs of ram.

    Heh, pbullara, I've got an 8600m GT myself, 3 gigs of ram, and a 2.2 ghz core 2 duo as well... I set the resolution down to 800x600 because it really owns my computer and graphics card otherwise. Kinda sad about that but oh well :(

    I'm surprised at how well 3D looks for this test. Besides the 2d menu clashing with everything else, it looks great. You just have to have the depth rather low, but so far I haven't run into lighting issue, etc.

    I appear to have skulks in with a bite + animation and tongue-lick-tooth reload animation. Vent crawling is in as well. Tried for sound but no luck so far. No luck on wall crawling so you jump high. Tried to use marines instead of targets but I have yet to find a way to kill a marine.

    "connect 24.151.17.162" in console if you wish to check it out. I'll throw the code up someplace, maybe.

    Is awesome.

    Wonderful visuals, but terrible framerate. (7-25 fps on high settings, medium screen resolution)
    Time for a new GPU.

    If you crash when creating a new game this may happen because you don't have the latest drivers.
  • ErikSlavikErikSlavik Join Date: 2007-12-11 Member: 63138Members
    I haven't read through all the posts but is there a list of console commands to view framerates and to toy around with the engine? Would be a big help and add allot of fun.

    I bet when the engine is optimized well all of the people with nvidia 8600gt will run it better.

    I think its cools the only thing that I found that was odd is in this image the weapon model intersects the world geometry.

    the LUA code is not there, thats why the weapons react that way. so no its not a bug

    I found an interesting issue, when using widescreen resolutions the FOV is horizontal locked instead of vertical. This means it chops off a bit for widescreen folks like myself.

    In this image I've superimposed a screenshot at 1280x800 over one of 1280x1024. In this photo your seeing the exact same area the camera would catch horizontally as you would with a standard 4:3 resolution. It shouldn't be like that, the FOV angle should determine your view area based on the vertical resolution available leaving the sides to show more of the playable area.
    Notice the cropped portion.
    <img src="http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y279/Gamma_x2/NS2/NS2_combo.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    You can really see it in action when you set a really strange custom resolution stretched across three screens.
    <img src="http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y279/Gamma_x2/NS2/NS2_Triple_3840.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    And in this one I've superimposed them all together with the superwidscreen shot resized and outlined to show how much your missing.
    <img src="http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y279/Gamma_x2/NS2/NS2_combo2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    Here are the other original pics if you want to see them by themselves.

    Inverting controls for a gaming controller I could understand... but for a MOUSE??!?!?!?! :p That's just crazy :p

    To invert your y-axis, look through the player.lua file, I don't remember what line but you simply make the value of 1 to -1 to invert if you want.

    Ah awesome, I was going to ask about an invert mouse option (although if you ask me, it's the other way around that's "inverted") but I figured the devs just hadn't gotten around to it. I'll have to do a quick search, thanks!

    i tried looking through lua files for this mysterious invert thing and i couldnt find anything that related to it. i did manage to make my player have a top speed of 15 with an acceleration of 1. i was like a battering ram.

    edit: search for "mouse, invert" both came up with nothing. not sure what its called, or if its even implemented yet.

    edit2: thats odd, when running my laptop on battery mode it crashes. when plugged in it runs. wow, wonder whats going wrong there?

    It's easy, just took a couple of seconds of looking. It's amazing how everything's laid out in really simple to read lua, the devs have done a great job on that. Just glancing at player.lua, I can already tell how easy this will be to mod.

    <u><b>For those who want invert mouse:</b></u>

    Open up Natural Selection 2\ns2\lua\Player.lua in a text editor. Notepad will do in a pinch.

    Go to line 197:<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->    // Update the view angles based on the input.
        local angles = Angles(input.pitch, input.yaw, 0.0)<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

    Change line 197 by adding a minus in front of input.pitch:<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->    // Update the view angles based on the input.
        local angles = Angles(-input.pitch, input.yaw, 0.0)<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

    All done!

    Only had a few minutes to mess about. I'm amazed it runs on my comp (256mb 8600m GT - laptop), though the FPS is bad as expected. Haven't had time to actually get in there and do any proper testing really. When I have time I'll dump a proper report out :P Also, can anyone tell me if NS2 dumps crash .mdmps? 'course those might not even have any meaning depending on how the build is configured/compiled.

    graphics looked great and ran smoothly on my machine (core2 duo 3.17ghz, 4g ram, radeon hd 4800x). however for some reason, key assignment wasn't working and i ended up with no way to move forward or backwards. i limped along sideways for a while but gave up and haven't tried it again. I was getting some weird black-screening but i think that may be an ati peculiarity. i'm really looking forward to future revs, the engine tech looks great.

    It's a great immersion point for modern games, really one of the best parts of Mirror's Edge. However, I'm not sure if the aesthetics are worth the effort.

    <b>Question to the devs:</b>

    Can we have the three video quality settings for the editor?
    Might help those with performance issues?!
