congrats UWE on a successful launch, very good job and trust me when I say this is the cleanest/best pre alpha Ive ever seen and Ive had my share of pre alphas. now am off for bug hunting after all its bug hunting season :D
Ok I just played around on the first map for 6-7 minutes. Awesome work guys. I like the moving around feel without crappy mouse acceleration and such. In old fashioned style, nothing in the way =)
Test Issue *Pretty fast I got the looping firing sound. Stopped after a reload and another round fired.
Not so serious issues *Out of ammo notifier would be awesome (voice, visual reminder). The rifle display is allright, but I tend to look at what Im shredding to pieces. Computerized voice or bleeping from rifle? It would help make the testing a smoother experience. Minimal annoyance and not the focus of an engine test ^^
*weapon model dissapearing in walls as noted earlier.
Third person option is kinda cool. If the sights or model were separated a bit it would actually be a cool addition to play. Especially having played a lot of 3rd person shooter MMO's last years (Tabula Rasa / Fallen Earth). It adds the problem of camera outside walls clipping tho. Also it'd take away the NS feeling of looking from the aliens mouth tho. And in that sence I'd understand the choice not to consider the option.
Looks really nice so far, just a few things I wanted to bring up.
First: When I look at a spot with dynamic lighting from the skybox (ie: the area with the bared window that looks outside) the game slows down a bit. I also posted this on the other site you mentioned. Off the top of my head, it could be an issue with the global lighting, an issue with shadows, or an issue with the skybox.
Second: In regards to the shadows, I would recommend having them gradually shifting from dark to light, not dark, lighter, no shadow as it is now. Looking at the texture you used, it really took away from the very nice look of everything else. I know its a very small detail in the grand scheme of it all, but its the little things like that that really make a game great.
Third: I know this has been brought up already, so just mentioning it, sound objects did not load. I had sound (foot steps and gun shots and such) but no music or ambient sounds.
Fourth: This last one is mainly just a suggestion. Theres all kinds of crap in your levels (pop cans, tools, boxes, terminals) but nothing is interactive. I for one would love to be firing at something and see tools just going everywhere as i strafe my fire across a shelf. Or hear a cling as something falls when something bumps it to the floor. Even able to shoot out a console that use to open a door (whether intensional or not). I'm sure your going to be doing some of that, just the more interactive a level is, the more "real" it feels.
So, thats all for now. The game loads up a bit slow but not a big deal there. Oh, one last thought. Can you look into allowing 64 bit compatibility?
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Can you look into allowing 64 bit compatibility?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> I works fine on Windows 7 64bit, I assume you mean native 64bit binary?

yea, it is pretty neat.. i didnt have that much buggy-ness..
just got stuck on a wall once
the gun model goes through walls when you walk against them
my fps (averaging 30, dropping to 15 sometimes) drops alot in some rooms that have more detail, such as a grated floor with piping undrneath.
The maps look really cool, nice details, looking forward to actually playing!
annoying criticism: although i think the lighting with the fans is really neat, it seems over done in the two test maps. i can totally understand if it is natural light, but most of them actually just have flourescent lights behind them. it doesnt make any sense other than to cast "cool" shadows in the room.

Go into the LUA of player and uncomment the fourth line in the function Player:GetCameraViewCoords and comment out the fifth one and you'll get a cool over the shoulder experience.

I kinda feel the maps are a little too dark. There is so much beautiful detail, but you can't see 60% of it. I know they're trying to go for a different feel, but it's a little too extreme. At least have a few well-lit areas. Also, there are multiple places around the maps where you can get stuck by jumping over railings, etc.

I knew a lot of newbie nsplayer (and console players..) would apreciate that option :P But seriously if you play some hardcore FPS (just like ns1) don't even think about it... First it's lame because you can see after the wall or even what is coming behind you. Also it's not the best view if you really want a fast and professional FPS. A simple example it's because this view sucks if you want to aim close combat target...
Finaly the first person view is, and will always be, the best view for a really immersive and realistic game.

Is anyone else unable to bind the arrow keys for movement? I mean I can set them in the bind settings but when I try to play I'm unable to move. If I set them to a normal letter key I can move fine.
Ive been doing what i can to boost NS2. A bunch of friends are on board, i work for blockbuster and i've been promoting the game as much as i can. there are a lot of people excited for the release!

As mentionned already, the problem I had before for textures not showing is that the card is out of memory. At medium graphics settings, everything is there.
Also, it would be nice to program the shadows to be visible proportionally to their range. For example, if I have a "sun" omni or spot light, having a really high range and beign far from the scene, we should be able to still see shadow cast from it.

See u later :p
Go into the LUA of player and uncomment the fourth line in the function Player:GetCameraViewCoords and comment out the fifth one and you'll get a cool over the shoulder experience.
That is, change
//viewCoords.origin = viewCoords.origin - viewCoords.zAxis * 0.4 - viewCoords.xAxis * 0.35 + viewCoords.yAxis * 0.1
viewCoords.origin = viewCoords.origin - viewCoords.zAxis * 2.5
to
viewCoords.origin = viewCoords.origin - viewCoords.zAxis * 0.4 - viewCoords.xAxis * 0.35 + viewCoords.yAxis * 0.1
//viewCoords.origin = viewCoords.origin - viewCoords.zAxis * 2.5
I approve very much of cool stuff hidden in comments heh!

need to a lot more work for that to actually work, but its nice to see the ease of modding it:)
