So, should we first expect an update to the Engine Test, or a playable Alpha in few months time?

Will you be releasing multiple versions of the ET or the Alpha based on what feedback and problems you get?
I believe the community would be happy with a fix for at least some of the major issues (such as Alt+Tabbing) in the ET.
Or a word about how we've informed the Dev team for the Alpha.

    Also,
That long awaited Fade reveal should be on the horizon - no doubt - but will it be sooner or later to the Alpha release, OR, post Alpha?

I suspect plans for Alpha would be a mostly playable NS2 game, which would include most of the aliens, structures, gameplay* and features to be put in.

    (*Gameplay:
Players could actually play an Online Multiplayer game and perform actions that would allow a Win/Lose/Tie situation to end a game's round.)

<!--quoteo(post=1766317:date=Apr 12 2010, 08:27 PM:name=Flayra)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Flayra @ Apr 12 2010, 08:27 PM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=1766317"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Thanks for all the great feedback everyone. I think most everyone working on NS2 has read most or all of the posts in this thread and on the forums and we appreciate it.

Friday was a big deal for us. We never set out to write our own engine but decided to do so to make NS2 the game it deserved to be. It has meant that the game has taken longer and been a LOT more work, but I think in the end we're all going to be much happier with it. We've made a lot of progress on the tech and the game recently and being able to give you even a small glimpse of it is very satisfying for us. The fact that you guys are ALREADY modding the game is also wicked. A big company or AAA-funded game probably wouldn't have been able to do this!

Now we have a great baseline to build off of, just like we had with the editor a few months ago. That had some issues initially but we were able to address them faster and more efficiently with your help. It's so much better to get some feedback now then to wait until it's too late to fix anything! We really appreciate your kind words, good will and patience while we continue working to get NS2 running and playing beautifully just as quickly as we can.

    You guys rock!<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

The graphics look awesome, but the perfomance is quite bad for me (Im on a laptop). Here are my specs:

    Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 @ 2.2GHz
    4 GB RAM
    64 bit Windows 7 Professional
    GeForce 8600M GT 256MB RAM

I really hope that they are going to improve the perfomance...

The engine ran smoothly on my x64 7 rig. Looking forward to more milestone releases.

hey guys good jobs keep it up.

then i reload my rifle it shows 30 before its reload.

I really hope you guys plan on making a borderless windowed mode. Isn't that easy to do? It's so nice to have no border with windowed mode and have it cover your whole desktop resolution.
  • emtegemteg Join Date: 2003-03-02 Member: 14207Members
Is there a documentation about the lua code somewhere? The language seems quite simple but when i tried to modify the rifle so that it would reload if you try to fire it when its out of ammo didnt really work. It did reload but it was buggy.

How does that stuff work over the network? And is there going to be a problem with cheaters?

That was one of my concerns too. Remember when NS didn't have a first person spectator mode? Anyway the parallel that I'm drawing is that alongside the full optimization of the engine, I hope that mechanisms to catch cheaters are already in place on first release.

Isn't that called fullscreen? Or am I misreading "no border and covering your whole desktop resolution"?

Not exactly, there are some games that allow you to play in windowed mode while appearing to be fullscreen. It basically just allows you to tab out faster/easier. Lineage 2 had it if I remember right, made it easier to tab out to look crap up. It was an MMO if your not familiar.

Wrong, Left 4 Dead has borderless window mode, and so does WoW.

    Pretty much.

I've been using 2 monitors for about 5 years now. Got a 41" HDTV and a 22" LCD hooked up.

"multimonitor" uses implies there are still people out there that use only one monitor?! Can't imagine going back.

    2x Apple 30" LED's for me :)

According to the FAQ: "A 1.2 GHz Processor, 256MB RAM, a DirectX 9 level graphics card, Windows Vista/2000/XP [...]. We are working hard to make sure NS2 runs well on average hardware without having to upgrade your machine!"

Either the devs are outright lying, or they have some serious optimization ahead of them.

agreed, the minimum requirements for XP are below, but no one would expect to get much out of it.

Serious optimization. Infact, the engine test 2 weeks before released to the public was running at approximately 50% worse than it currently is.

They need the feedback to gauge problems and plan optimization routes for the hardware. As always, it's more of a finishing touch than a core issue and I'm sure will get addressed heavily before release.

Not everyone has $2k+ to spend on just monitors. Also, I wouldn't play an FPS with 2 screens, I would need 3 minimum because of the bezels (wouldn't want the bezel in the middle of the action).
