Blizzard and Valve, two developers are known for their long creation cycles are not the standard in the industry. Everyone else has a limited budget and a longer development cycling just eats more of their money, so taking their time is not an realistic option. They pretty much have to get as much as they can done in the least amount of time.
Don't be juvenile and think the developers don't want to release the game when it's fully done. They just can't.

There should be workers, but they should be already dead (with some half-eaten).
A bunch of dead worker models would give map-makers some extra toys to play with.
And hell, maybe a bit of a bot program for the workers just for the lulz, though I don't like the idea of a NPC that does nothing. Meh, somebody else might, though.

I think it would be great to have some dead worker, scientist or marine ragdoll models for the mappers. Some of the locations that the Kharaa settle down in must have had people with little means of defense. I'm not talking hundreds of bodies laying around, just a few in certain areas to add to the atmosphere, a pointer to the past.
[Edit] Yes Kwil, you will find maps like this, and you will also find a ton of crap maps without "pile-o-corpses". Just do as most of us do and avoid them. But as in this and many other cases I don't see why one shouldn't have the option to do something just because it might be used in the wrong way. Maybe it's a bad idea, I'm just saying it should not be considered a bad idea just because it might be misused.
Does infestation feast on flesh, need it or get any advantage from it? This Kharaa infestation might be very fast but anything close to this on earth would take a very long time to break down a body. The infestation also spreads from structures right? So if you drop a yellow worker guy no where close to a structure there wont be any infestation around. Or are the bodies infected, dirt for a seed, when bitten to death? Might be interesting if you end up having a human form covered under an infestation carpet ,with some visible cloth, growing outwards. A serious discussion on "science" we got going here.
If they give a body model for scenery you will find maps using a "pile-o-corpses" motif. No thanks.
Besides which, bodies wouldn't last long in infestation -- the bacterium would pull apart the organic matter for incorporation into the mass.
Same deal under nanites, organic compounds are very useful and resources scarce in space. Any dead organic matter would not be just left there and thus wasted.

Bah i've been playing NS since early release. I didn't join forums for many years, I've never got much to say. However, as a serious request; would it be possible for you to make some sort of super special artbook? Your artists are incredibly talented and i'm rather NS-mad :). Everything with NS2 looks amazing, I just hope once it comes that my body can take the initial endorphine effect of belly sliding with a gorge :D.
Edit: 30 March 07. I think that I must have joined before under a different name. That or I literally didn't join for a long long time. I look like a newbie :( and to think I'm 20 now and I ruined my early high school life with NS :) good times :D.
* safety blabla. small railings. Yes as earlier discussed. Also. I guess this huge drill would dig up and spew a LOT of dirt around. Flinging it across the whole room unless it has some kind of shielding/forcefield yadayada.
* Supports and more bulky thingys. Extra drill-tips on rails? wagons.. girders... dirt transporters.. Whatever it is that keeps the drill suspended, I guess its huge and above the room? like some oil platform etc. Else it needs some support girders that goes down on the ground to keep it stabile. Wich brings me to the practical position of the manned terminal positioned just above the drill. Is that an ideal place for technical equipment? The vibrations etc would be quite monstrous if the digging is performed by mechanical things and not some lame lazer or anything "energybased" Maybe some flashy foreman console on the side?
* The fan. I dont know if it is situated in some kind of alien goo infestation that covers the whole room? or if this is simply just a dirt-wall. The other walkways are logical since they are connected thru girders and support. But the fan is kinda by itself placed in goo. Unless its actually fitted in a structure covered with infestation.
Ahh I love theese reflective moments with a coffecup commenting on great artwork on what feels like an upcoming masterpiece :>

Relax, everything is going to be fine.
Also include those yellow workers in game. Think there are workers working like a zombies which u can kill them too. Pff 2 many ideas dont bother it !
But PLEASE upgrade / change / delete that sucker logo, it makes me sad :_(

in other words, advertising, auto updates, achievements etc. etc.
would be too bad to see it walk past this mod again.
