Hehe. I'm pretty sure people will just end up calling them glowies anyway, so it doesn't matter if their "actual" name is nymphs, embyrs or whatever. Though 'embyr' doesn't sound too bad. Nymph reminds me oh nymphomaniac. O_o

TBH I think they'll develop their own name in time. I know I for one usually called gorges 'fatties'.

    "Get the fatty!"
    "I'll go Fatty"

I'd say leave them unofficially named, and let the mic spam arguments begin in-game!

    I will call them Sprites.
Sprites are Kobolds, freak Flashes in the Atmosphere above a Thunderstorm, a receptor for IR-System, etc pp....

Wouldn't think of anything better fitting - and glowy... I'd expect some big (Br)ass that has never seen a Battlefield saying that.

sprites is good, but tbh i reckon they are gonna get called glowies by players whatever their offical name is <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

When I looked at the picture ( concept art? ), my first thought was drone. Because they look a lot like the drone weapon from Stargate Atlantis. ( <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_technology_in_Stargate#Drone_weapon" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_techn...te#Drone_weapon</a> )

Now from what I read they are doing tasks like drones in a hive would. Tending to eggs and what not.

I know for sure that it not going to be called Nymph in game, it just does not fit the creature image in most peoples minds.

I expect to be calling over voicecomm that there are drones around here. The other suggested words might not transmit just what I mean as fast as needed. Calling something Glowies over voice comm, makes me think the person just started playing a fps, and is commenting on how everything is glowing. Not that they have encountered something dangerous.

After all, if you called a skulk a vent, ( because they are often found in one ), what do you think would happen in game?

Because it's the name of the builder unit for the Zerg in StarCraft?

    Drones, Glowies, or Flying Sperm.

I'll go for any of the 3.

I seriously dislike "Embyr"... <b>Ember</b> is nice though. Ember is easy to say, write and remember, and it denotes harmlessness yet potential threat... a spark of life waiting to become a dangerous alien.

<b>Fireflies, starflies, glowflies, glowgrubs, glowworms, seedlings, sporelings, spores</b> ... nice descriptive names.

<b>Drone</b> is very nice. Simple, descriptive ... and very fitting for something hive-controlled, with no autonomy, unlike the other lifeforms.

+1 on the suggestion to have both a scientist name and a marine name. The scientist name could then be "nymph", and the more colloquial name could be something else.

But seriously when most people hear nymph they think of this: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nymph" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nymph</a>
    ...or worse, nymphos, nymphomania, etc...

The best acronyms I can come up with (so far) are:

    <b>Alien Precursor Organism</b> (Ay-Pee-Oh)
    <b>Kharaa Precursor</b> (Kay-Pee)

There's ENDLESS possibilities with acronyms tho...

    Embyrs is awesome.

Do that now, I command you.

i like - Xeevae (zeevae) Xeno + Larvae
    - Xenvae (zenvae)
    - Xarvae (zarvae)
    - Xenosects (Zenosects) Xeno + Insects

i wish i could mix Xeno + ( drone or drift or glide or glowie or scout) somhow ?

my other idea is what somone already said, e.g Remote Alien Reconnaissance Scouts or RAR'S lol make up a acronym.

    keep thinkin dudes.

    Peace Out.... .

    Firebug
    Glowbug

    Or just... Bug?

I'm sure these have all been mentioned already, but they're pretty easy to say.

I like nymph's, it's easy to say and it sounds right. Glowies just sounds too childish!!
Spooks also sounds like something a marine would call them. Drones might be good but i just end up thinking of starcraft or something mechanical.
    *
Stalkers would be cool, but maby too cool for the "nymphs" and not really describing them right.

Creepers is the best that i can come up with, describes them well. I think people are too focused on the fact that they glow <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
    ---
Nymphs or creepers are my favorites so far
(Btw, dont they look a lot like shrimps...) shrimps! easy to say and it sounds great =D You wouldn't mistake any other khaara for shrimp!
    mmmh, shrimps xD

It's both a real biological term for a life-cycle stage of an insect, and makes you think of things that glow.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I must say I'm late to this debate but if this has not been chosen as the name for this concept, it should be.

Another angle for it that just clicks for me is that, if these are only near the hive, Instar makes me think of inner or deep in something...like alien territory.

It works on the most levels for me while being short, unique, and catchy.
  • KwilKwil Join Date: 2003-07-06 Member: 17963Members
That's right. Our hardcore, best of the best marine, prepped for combat, ready to face things he knows exist for the sole purpose of tearing his throat out, is going to walk into a room and go "Commaner, there's glowies all over the place in here.

Not thinkin' so. Nor nymphs, same reason. Sounds like ass.

Marines would probably use acronyms, or perhaps something semi-derogatory. I tend to think Spooks is about the best suggestion so far, even though it is derogatory in some circles (they changed the name of the Spooks show in Britain to "MI-5" when they brought it overseas for that very reason, actually).

Failing that, hive-lights seems somewhat appropriate to me.
  • MuYeahMuYeah Join Date: 2006-12-26 Member: 59261Members
I don't know if anyone ever pointed this out but technically speaking they're not actually nymphs. (This is probably a weak definition don't quote me in a paper) They don't resemble their final form and undergo a pupal stage making them simply larvae.

I'm pretty sure it works something like this:

Nymph -> multiple moults + different instar stages -> (final moult) -> Adult form

Larva -> Pupa (egg) -> Adult form

On the other hand I think the zerg guys in SC were called Larva and Nymph is a pretty good name, plus you can probably find exceptions to those rules above in nature if you look hard enough.

I do like Wisp. Makes me think of a mysterious ball of light. Likewise, I do like Sprite for the same reason.

Though if realism is what you're after, no marine is going to call'em nymphs, sprites, or instar. A marine's probably going to call it a spark or a glowy (also because no marine would be caught dead calling a little ball of light a "pixie").

A few ideas that came to mind:

    Flicks,
    Jimps,
    Traps,
    Wards
