The graphics are disappointing, yes. Not a dealbreaker, but disappointing.

Pro Tip: We need to decide on servers, one for order and one for destruction. This is probably going to be based on server population at release, so this may be interesting. I highly suggest AGAINST open RvR though. The maps are set up for ganks. In addition, they are allowing people on open RvR to participate in RvR one tier below them. This means that we will have, at tier 1, level 8 people fighting against level 20 people. Stupid. This was clearly set up for the gankers and only the gankers and I believe it is safe to say we should ignore it at release.

On the matter of classes, so far I've had the most fun with my Disciple of Khaine. On order, I probably like the swordmaster the best. Stabbing people is fun, and healing people is fun. Stabbing people so you can heal them is therefore the most funnest thing ever. I hope you can agree with me. Also, I can stoled your strengths kekeke.

Finally, on the matter for graphics, I play games for the gameplay. I am an indie fan because I will play almost anything as long as it has engrossing features. There are so many good things about Warhammer Online I'm pretty much convinced I can put up with the graphics until they fix it (or if they don't fix it). Did I mention that I like stabbing and healing at the same time a LOT?

We need more NA/Oceanic people playing WAR (and we need to pick servers also).

I go with Redford on being dead set against open RvR as it is full of fail. I will also probably be playing Order because I like Dwarfs and dislike being locked out of a server because everyone and their 12 year old brother wants to play the bad guys.

I will probably give it a try after it's released.
    So.

    ORDER or DESTRUCTION people? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    Sorry, the obvious bad guys.

most people playing WAR will NOT know just how wonderfully horrible the Empire is, and how racist Dwarfs and Elves are.

and I am not going to nitpick like lolf does.

Since the european beta sucked so bad, those who played in it and continue to play once the full game launches will be credited with seven free days from the 18h of September onward. I am satisfied.

I can't find this game in Denmark, after looking for 5 min. Is EA's online store a choice, or is it as horrible as I imagine it?
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
It will let you download the game for six months after purchase. After that, you will have to pay an additional fee to download it again. You can also pay a fee up front to extend the download period to two years. I think you can back up the downloaded install files, so you may only need to download again if you lose those. It's way inferior to Steam, but I guess it's manageable.

Beyond that, I don't know whether it's good or bad. I bought mine from www.cdon.com (their danish branch, to be precise) but they're renovating at time of writing. Don't know how long they've been doing that or how long they're going to continue.

    Hey all,

I played the Open Beta and I love it. I'll be playing as Destruction, going to roll a Zealot or Shaman, not sure yet. I played a Zealot in the OB, but I'm liking what I hear about the Shaman. Let me know what server you guys play on and I'll be happy to join you.

Got the codes for early access but it's a 12 hour download for the client...

As I fear my ISP I won't download past 6pm, which means not getting it until Tuesday evening... And I wouldn't be surprised if there was another huge patch to download.

I should probably save myself the hassle and wait for the DVD to arrive!

    [EDIT]

Hmm turns out gamershell.com host the download- a bit more bareable as it's a http download not a torrent so I don't have to upload. Should appease the ISP.

I believe the new site is up. Can I just order it, download the client and start playing? I get a DVD in the mail, right? But I can start playing early by downloading the game, right?

You need to order a copy with early access. Play.com and the EA store stopped handing them out on Sunday.

The game doesn't officially go live in Europe until Thursday, so if you order now you should get it for release?

(And you might not be missing out if you don't get early access- I'm sitting on the WAR IRC chans and it's full of people whining about the usual MMO teething problems. Still, seems a fairly successful launch for an MMO overall.)
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
Yeah, it's probably too late to get early access. And you'll get a boxed copy, from what I understand.

I really like this game. I was up until 8am today playing my white lion, shooting the breeze with some fellow order folk while we captured RvR points in the orcs vs dwarves area. Good fun and potentially health destroying =3

White lion is like a utility rogue with a pet. Works soooo well (except those occasions where the pet AI goes utterly insane and either buries its head in the ground or runs against the enemy repeatedly not attacking). You get charge (a kind of sprint), you can bypass keep doors like the witch hunter / elf, your pet is like a walking perma-snare, lots of positional attacks for you and at the top level you get 'fetch' which allows you to send your pet in and have them toss the target over their head to land at the feet of you and your friends. Fun fun fun! =D

I love the look of the shadow warrior but I'm not sold on their playstyle.

Archmage is fun but doesn't blow my mind either... just enjoyable.

WP is cool but complex to play at times; lots to keep track of!

Witch Hunter has awesome outfits and just bursts the living heck out of things if you can catch something alone... after that you better leg it though. Oh and their natural ballistic skill progression is insanity... at the upper levels that pistol 'snap shot' hurts a surprising amount =3

Is it just me, or do clothies feel incredibly wussy and vulnerable in this game? I mean, I've only played to like level 8 so I don't exactly have a full feel for any class, but my archmage and my demon summony guy who floated around like silver surfer - they were half decent at what they did, but if any melee class ever closed in on me, I was utter toast. there was nothing I could do. my archmage couldn't heal enough to heal through melee damage, and my other character could only hope to do a smidge of damage before keeling over when someone closed the gap. I imagine you must get fears and stuff at later levels so it's probably not as big a problem, but at low levels - so gimpy!

At low levels casters are weak to close range damage. This is partially due to their slow hp growth, and their low number of skills at low level. As your level increases, you will find your survivability will also increase. Some tips for playing a low level caster.

    1. Use the high ground

Most long range damage skills reach 100ft. Most mid range damage skills reach 65ft. This is at least 60ft more then any melee attacks. Fighting over even ground at that distance can give you an advantage. Fighting on top of an elevated position where the melee fighters can not reach you can give you even more of an advantage.

    2. Fight with your friends

Going lone wolf is possible as a melee fighter, but can be pretty foolish if you are a caster. All it will take is one unexpected attack by a witch hunter to ruin your day. It's highly suggested that as a caster you fight with a group of people to back you up.

    3. Choose a damaged or hard-to-reach target

When fighting, choose to fight those with low HP as a priority. Casters tend to have less focused DPS then melee classes, but can deliver potent single target spikes. You can kill enemies before they know what hit them. Targeting other mages who are taking the high ground will also help your melee fighters reach them before they are killed, because they will be injured and distracted by you.

    4. Use ALL your skills

Remember, PCs don't have hate. Don't be afraid to use your 0s spells or do AoE attacks like crazy. The primary reason to be a caster is you strike multiple targets at the same time. Don't forget to use all your skills in cycle. Killing an enemy with your 2s spell alone may be impossible. Combining it with DoTs and disruptive effects will improve your lifespan greatly. This becomes easier to achieve as your rank improves. In particular, DoTs usually have low cast times and very high damage for the APs spent. Use them early and often.

Finally, don't forget that when you go into a tier your level is not improved to the maximum. It's allways a number ending in eight. In tier one, you will be improved to rank 8 if you are less but the highest rank for that tier is 11. Take this into account when considering what fights you can and can not win.

You mentioned the Archmage. Though you can deal good damage (at early levels, your damage over time spells are a very potent part of your arsenal), you're letting your talents go to waste if you don't surround yourself with allies you can heal. Try to stay near the back of the pack with the other casters and hope that any melee fighter who tries to get to you is "picked up" and dispatched by friendlies before they can do too much harm. Reward them with heals for their trouble, but be prepared to heal even if they drop you like a hot potato when enemies close in on you. You want to make your presence felt, and your absence doubly so. You want them to miss you, give them an incentive to keep you alive.

What I don't get is, why a game in 2008 has 2003 graphics, and the clunky-buggy combat. Those are 2 things really holding me back.

I will tell you this right now zombie... a team of two or more healers who look after each other are nigh on invincible, especially to lone attackers at low levels =o

On my white lion I can kill most players one on one (yes, even tanks =3 ) but if there's two healers together who heal whichever one I attack I'm stumped.

If you find yourself alone as an archmage your combat style is simple: Run. Load up all your DoTs on them (they're all instant cast so you don't need to stop) and get your heals up then use flee and leg it. Your DoTs are your main source of damage so only waste your time nuking them until you've got plenty of room. Don't be afraid to just leave a fight if it looks like you can't win, you're better off with some backup (this isn't a healer thing, this applies to any class). The only time you'll catch me fighting anything my class isn't built to kill is when I need to buy others time or they're hurt enough to give me the edge =P

I will chip this in also:

Clothies are fragile but god DAMN are they a major asset on any battlefield.

I have fallen in love with blowing ###### up as a Bright Wiz. If something closes, I likely die (unless I have dropped him significantly first), and thus never travel alone (I don't have roots yet), and always try to take out other caster types (I tend to try and hunt the healers).

In a big battle the healers are the key to everything. So long as they are healing up their tanks/mdps you CAN'T win, however you don't even have to kill em, most will run as soon as you light into them (or start spamming heals on their own fragile bodies).

    As Redford pointed out:
Fast cast spells are your best friend in RvR, because as soon as they see you, you can no longer cast long spells. Combine that with the fact that most fast cast spells don't actually identify you as the caster, and have fun.

The Bright wiz who is sitting back lobbing fireballs is everyone's first target. However I can out DPS him by focusing on alternating keeping my dots up and using my fast cast spells.

    PS:

I ordered from CDON.dk (cdon.com) but seeing as how it is labeled as to be released on the 18th. Will it ship that day? Me and a couple of friends would love to have it ready to play on the 19th. Is that out of the question? Anyone have experience with this?

It's unlikely a retailer would only take on a shipment on the day of release, they'll likely have it at the start of the week?
