Well, when it works well, why mess with it?

It does have the Guild Wars style instant-customization though, as well as WoW's API-based UI customization.

And lolfighter, yeah, I'd say wait a bit. Heck, it may be ready by the release date, I don't know. I just don't think so.

I honestly never really got into DAoC, however lots of people are saying that it holds a good bit of similarity to it. The massive scale battles, fighting over keeps, etc etc.

    Why?

Seriously, why bother making a new UI when the one that EVERYONE uses (including DAoC, which predates wow, and was made by the same company)

I mean, the standard answer to this question is evolutionary development instead of revolutionary development. Why try to redefine the genre (or make a new genre) with every game? Build on what exists, make it better, and add in that which is your own.

WoW defines the genre atm, so people automatically compare all other mmorpgs to it, much the same as blizz defines the genres for action RPGs (Diablo, which is really just a rogue like with a killer UI <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />) and RTS (Starcraft or WC3 depending on your flavor).

Combine that with seeing what attempts at revolutionary game play changes (AoC's sword swinging stupidity) and you see why evolutionary is a tad bit safer.

So who's in the beta that's running at the moment?

    Anyone got a spare key? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

I am going to play an Orc, and I am going to bind every single key on my G11 keyboard except W to say "WAAAGH!!" and I will run around in huge circles doing nothing but randomly slapping my hand on the keyboard.

Played as a magus for a while. The most entertaining thing I did was strafe sideways everywhere so it looks like I'm snowboarding everywhere I go.

    obligatory:
    <img src="http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2006/20060410.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

so yeah, no open beta for anyone but preorders, right? I'd be interested in giving it a whirl, but I'm not one to preorder a game without testing it first.
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
And you can't test it without preording. Awesome how that works.

But yes, there is open beta access for other people than those who preorder. Namely those who were in the closed beta. <_<

    Sigh.

My computer is almost 100% kaput at this point so I can't say anything more.

It makes for very sad geek.

Hell, I am taking a day off from work just to work on the computer (disregard that it is also so that I can be home for the contractor to show up to do some repairs)

Waii! I've got the open beta client installed on my Work PC now, all ready for it on the 7th!
I still have no idea what classes I'll be dabbling with when the beta starts XD

so, to ask a redundant question: still only open beta for preorders? and as for preorders - does that mean I could go to gamestop and plunk down just $5 to get a beta key? and get my $5 back if I think the game is ass?

    100% wrong.

US closed beta ended a couple weeks ago.

we had our Preview weekend last weekend (I missed it)

Our open beta starts the 7th, and I THINK that the EU one starts then also.

Man, they really needs to dispense this info properly. Most people have no clue what the ###### is going on with this launch.
  • GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
To my knowledge, only Collector's edition pre-orders can get into the EU open beta. Standard edition pre-orders will only get you into the US Open Beta.

There might be one or two collector's editions hidden away somewhere if you know where to look. The only brick and mortar place in the UK that was involved in the collector's preorder program was HMV so I had to hunt mine down. I did it a while ago though.
Outside of the UK I don't know who but if there's an HMV in your country it's worth a shot.

Oh, and HMV online is a different company from the HMV stores so you can't get it from their online site either =3

I'm worried that I'll end up having to re-purchase the game to get the U.S. version. I'm told that GOA screwed the servers for DAoC up so horribly that most europeans played on the U.S. servers.
  • GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
GOA was originally based in france but I hear that they've moved over to Dublin now to get around the issues of france's quirky internet (good connections inside it, bad outside I hear).

I'll give them a shot, but admittedly I do kinda prefer being on servers where everyone speaks english guaranteed. In the european ones there's always some people with broken english or who are determined that they have the right to barrage you with their native language because anything less is 'facism' ¬.¬

I've always tried to respect other cultures but when someone says "I should be able to speak xxxx in english servers, it's your fault for not learning xxxx." I can't help but ask them if they've learned every single european language to fluency. Do people not get the reason that the servers have a set 'language' is so we can all communicate with one another?

    meh... rant over =3

can you just pick some up locally at a computer parts shop or something? I wouldn't know - never tried it - but it's just an idea, since they're just clips <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I don't get the language issue. If they don't speak a language I do, I ignore them. I've never been called a fascist for that, and I'll laugh the day that happens. If the constant chatter in moonspeak bothers me, most games have a handy ignore function (note to developers: goddammit, on servers with thousands of people on them I JUST MIGHT have to ignore more than ten people. Don't arbitrarily set ridiculously low limits on the ignore list). The only times I ever see problems is when some prick indignantly yells "spek english u idiopt."
  • GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
    I can't ignore people. It's like a condition or something =P

See if I ignore someone I won't know that they're talking and someone else will say something about that person talking which makes me curious which makes me not bother ignoring anyone.

On the upside, this particular quirk has made me pretty good at demolishing people over chat if they're annoying me, seeing as I have no choice but to deal with them =3
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
When "Deathkillaboiiii" says "lol u ######" in broadcast chat, nothing he will EVER say will EVER be in any way valuable, and ignoring him is 100% safe. I've done this a LOT, and it has NEVER been any disadvantage whatsoever. As for other people responding to him, that just means you only hear their half of the flamewar. The solution is to ignore those ######wits as well. Presto, blissful silence.

The thing about MMOs is that even though they are all about playing together with other people, at most 20% of them are NOT total, utter ######wits. Most of those peabrains are entirely worthless proto-humans who would serve humanity best by throwing themselves in a meat grinder to serve as dog food. If I never have to hear a single world those oxygen thieves sputter from the diseased stinkholes they call mouths, I will be content.
  • DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
ignore functions in MMOs are based on the real life concept of ignoring people, so I just use my brain's built-in ignore function to tune out people who are obviously functionally retarded.
