Jap spec so it's 225bhp standard <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> rather than 205bhp (being the UK spec, I believe)

Running 1 bar boost - and a few other things... glad I never bought the exhaust system receipt for £700 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":0" border="0" alt="wow.gif" />

yeah.. *sigh*

it's in the shop right now because i got put in a rear-end entrapment at a yielding turn.

chick is about to roll through the intersection, and then slams on her brakes with me right behind her in order to yield to someone waaaaaay far back.

i apologized for hitting her (around 10-20mph.. enough to shove my intercooler and dent my radiator...) and mentioned that it really looked like she was going through the intersection. she replied that she thought she was going through too, and just decided to stop.

Well, the Eclipse is back, and in the process of being broken in. The rings haven't seated yet, and there are a couple of small oil leaks, but she seems to be in a lot better shape already; no stalling in the low-rev range, so I can actually putter around parking lots and suburban streets without looking like an idiot, bucking the car about.

Biggest concern is that I'm afraid one of the pistons may already be getting low compression for some reason. When I was starting it this morning, it made the same WHUN-nana-WHUN-nana, albeit a lot less severely than before, with the triple-cracked piston.

Reconnected my idle sensor switch and turned the fuel pressure WAY down, as they had it set for a 2G N/T, which was virtually hosing the cylinders down; was set at almost double the 'proper' pressure. I've left it 5psi high (was 15 up) just in case they wanted the engine to get really, really hot for some reason, potentially to heat-cycle everything faster. Also fixed the throttle cable as they kept it just a little too tight to let the car idle properly.

They also fixed the vacuum nipple on the compressor outlet elbow, and took my MBR out of the loop until after the break-in is done.. told me to make a couple of full third gear pulls, and then keep boost minimal after that. Which I've done so far, but it is TRULY a pain when you get some Honda kids with fart cans flying by, or an Evo pacing you and gesturing. I can hardly wait for the first 3000 miles to be up, so I can start romping again. Even with a painfully rich mixture, the car is running nicely and making more power than I've felt for a while... which isn't really saying much.

i know how you feel. my insurance company is being annoying and slow. both me AND the auto shop are waiting on them to approve everything.

in the meantime i drive borrowed cars, mostly a grand am from a coworker who lives down the hall. every day i drive past the same "fart cans" you talk about... exhausts that sound like they're about to explode, high revs in 3rd gear and still going about 25mph...

sigh. just wait till next month, stupid kids..
• TalesinTalesin Our own little well of hate Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7710NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators
Well, high revs are just a function of gearing. I suffer the same problem... scooting around at 35mph in third at 3Krpm. With the 3" exhaust, apparently it sounds like I'm trying to race everything, even with the silencer in place. But the high revs are more a product of the gearing my tranny is forced to use; lower than the FWD by quite a bit due to the added torque requirements of an AWD drivetrain.

Can hardly wait to hit the 1K mark, get the oil changed, and be good to go... pure agony to have to keep my foot under control just enough to keep it out of boost. I really should pin the wastegate open at this point, so it can't build any.

Just worried that one of the new halfshaft seals may have popped out or otherwise come undone; there's a LOT of fluid being lost, and the missing chunk doesn't seem to be coming out of the engine oil.. making me suspect the tranny, which I can't check anywhere near as readily. Might also be the clutch, but much less likely.. it doesn't smell like bananas (which the brand of clutch fluid I use, does).
• ZigZig ...I am Captain Planet! Join Date: 2002-10-23 Member: 1576Members
well yeah i understand what you're saying. the high revs bit i was talking about is the honda kid who scoots past you at 25mph and it sounds like his engine's about to blow up. i'm sure he explains to his friends how his new JDM silencer gives him mad horsez.

where do you live, dude? just make some road trips that you didn't need to make. 1k in no time! lol

SoCal. Burbank, specifically. And I can't do that... it has to be varying engine loads and RPM levels, or the rings won't seat properly. Just 200 miles to go though; I have to do it tonight, as I'm going to Vegas tomorrow after work, so I can earn super extra overtime (x3+!) by working CES.

Just got my laptop hooked into the car... GPS, MP3 audio patch, datalogging. Verra verra nass. Of course the first thing I did was torment my GPS, setting a destination and then ignoring the GPS, or turning the wrong way intentionally... had a new route within five seconds. Spiffy.

Unfortunately, I'd forgotten to set up any kind of crossover or limiter on the audio patch from the lappy.. a bass-heavy song came up, and now all of my speakers are blown. :b So I can still get turn-by-turn, but only if I set the speakers to full-rear and driver's side. Even then it sounds like they're coming from an earbud held about three feet away.
No big loss though really, as it was just the old OEM crap, and I'd been meaning to re-do the ICE for a while now. Get some good DBQuart or MBQuart speakers, a proper crossover and sub, an amp so my head unit will stop trying to overheat.

Also, for some reason in the mornings I only am getting 15in/Hg vaccuum (and very rough running), but after a half hour of driving it smooths out and gives 20in/Hg as it should. Thinking the rings haven't seated yet... unless it's just an oddity of running forged pistons. Engine braking still produces ~25in/Hg, regardless of hot or cold, so I don't know what's going on with it.

Can hardly wait to get boosting again, but they said to just do a couple hard pulls, then keep boost minimal (but drive normally) for as long as possible, to squeeze out every potential HP. It hurts, but I'm going to try to shoot for at least 5000 miles. Already had to boost four times (two initial hard pulls, and two escape-from-an-accident squeezes) but I'm hoping that won't muck with anything.

Depends on your car. In my case (a DSM), I needed three things:
-A Laptop with a serial port
-A special cable from said serial port to my car's ODBI port (diagnostic port)
-Tunerstein, a program specially made to talk to my ECU, through said cable

Some manufacturers make things easy.. Ford especially, as they apparently sell a kit just to reprogram the ECU for performance tuning. Subaru has a similar setup for the WRX line. It varies by vehicle and manufacturer. Generally, 'performance' cars are more likely to have an enthusiast niche, which is almost required for the software to get written in the first place. If you're riding around in a Geo Metro, don't hold out *too* much hope.

If all you want to do is datalog, and you have a 1995 or newer vehicle, you should be able to get an ODBII cable and logging software pretty easily, as it became standardized then. You can record stuff like RPMs, speed, any DTCs that pop up, timing advance, injector pulse width, time and date of use, all that good stuff. For actually tuning... well. Before you get to the point of altering your ECU's fuel maps, you need a lot of specialized upgrades to make the car tunable. Specifically, a wideband O2 is a good investment, allowing you to 'roll tune' the car, instead of shelling out for expensive dyno time with a WBO2 cat/testpipe replacement.

Really depends on what you want to DO with it, Fuzzy. If you just want to peek at what the engine is doing now and then, or to pull a check engine light code, and have a '95+ vehicle, pick up a $100 ODBII scan tool from Autozone.

Also, looks like my speakers weren't blown. They pulled my ECU to look at it, and knocked my antenna cable out of the head unit. They plugged it back in... into the left preamp RCA out. Meaning the internal amp was shorting through my antenna. :b Fixed, problem went away. May still need to replace two of my speakers, just because they're craptastic to begin with.

Anyways, I was just wanting to get the laptop up to see what all my car does since it had some custom stuff to the engine when i bought it, i'm not quite sure what its pushing but I'm betting its over 200 atm. I might use it for tuning down the road somewhere but I'd be scared I'd ###### my car all up getting into that stuff <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
