If I went to war, I wouldn't be a medic. I'd likely aim to be tank crew, simply because that's what I like.

As for helping him.....I don't know. I've never been shot before, I don't know how it would feel to be shot at, survive, and capture the man who did it.

If any of you care, heres an article Ben Stein wrote which is kind of cool. Has to deal with our soldiers and what not...

I realize I just asked another person to step off the soapbox, but people, stop diluting this man's achievement by marking it up for or against a country, or "the war". This was an action of a good man, not of an army, not of a country, not of a policy. Honor it as such.

    Indeed.

On a side note, Allah Ackbar is an actual saying? I thought it was just some joke involving a certain aquatic species and the famous line "IT'S A TRAP".

I'm sure that if it were a British soldier, a German soldier, an Australian soldier, a Finnish soldier or any other soldier in the world, the local media would be talking about it, too. Quit using any excuse to bash America.

I think that the soldier is going to be angry, actually.

    1) He didn't get to die for Allah. That's what he was taught to want.
    2) He's now a POW.
    3) He's been taught to hate Americans, he'll suspect their motives right away.

What facts do you base your deduction on, bacon?

I understand that it's difficult for us to see these men as anything but killers, but they have their higher aims as much as the allied forces have. I'll grant you that not too few of them will be in it for the action, but in every war, you have certain reasons your people believe in - and ji-had is as significant (and benevolent) to many Muslims as the concept of spreading democracy and freedom is to us.
Painting them as zealots out for blood does not simply do them a disservice, it makes it difficult to see what you're up against.

No, I read the newspaper. Some of you'll remember that there were articles about the conviction of the 9/11 attackers that everyone dying in the strikes would ascend. I dunno why but the gap between the gun firing and the guy getting hit seems too long, especially when it was so close. I know nothng about bullet speeds and stuff but at 75 yards from what I know, there shouldn't be a noticable gap between the gun shot and the hit.

It was a Dragunov according to the article. Probably a PSL or some other similar rifle. They fire 7.62 x 54r, which is a great deal more powerful than what the AK-47 fires, 7.62 x 39.

There is body armor that will stop it; Level III Armor stops multiple 5.56mm, 7.62 x 39, and similar threats. Level IV Armor stops .30-06 armor piercing (7.62 x 63 AP).

The soldier in the video is wearing Interceptor body armor with SAPI plates. Among other threats, it will stop 7.62 x 54r (as seen in this video) and multple AK-47 rounds. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->

Yes, bullets will knock you down if they're big enough. I'm not sure about 7.62x54r, but larger shots definitely have enough force to plant you on your butt. However, you're probably right to some extent- the way he fell looks like it may have been a combination of the bullet's force and his startled reaction.

"Allah o Akbar" or "God is Great."
