The uncomprehensive, and half length guide to (in my opinion) one of the most important units (if you will) in the game.

Lets start off with the basics before we go into more complex stuff.

Gorge - A slow, chubby, rodent sized builder class.
Gorge Attacks - Ranged Light Damage; Health Spray; Web; Babblers

Now....from the looks of it, he is a very weak, yet dont let his looks decieve you, for he is very strong and useful.

I have personnally gone 28-0 and even better (thats my only *-0 score) with a simple few tips that can help improve your gorge game.

Teamplay, use it
Always run with a good pack of 2-3 skuls in early game

Bad team? ok
If you cannot seem to get a good team, build in the backround and secretly

Stay Alive!!
Dont waste rescourses on re-evolving, stay alive!!

Now that you have some simple tips...its time to give you the meat and potatoes, yes thats right, how to build properly..

Bob the builder
Ok, first off, you should know how to build chambers correctly, heres the breakdown:
[O]Offensive
[D]Deffensive

If you have elevation on the enemy, use it, block the door with 2 [O] and put 2 [O] on the railing or something, always put 2 [D] behind every 2[O] to be effective.

STACK YOUR TOWERS!!!!, I cannot stress this more...there is nothing like having a stack of towers.

Stack ON the resource nozzle, this works very well in cases with a vent behind it, and also makes it more difficult for the enemy to tell apart.

Webs....
Use webs low to the ground, and if a person is webbed, web while he is webbed so he will run into them and with ease let your towers/babblers slap him up

On The Attack?
Send babblers ahead, there just as destructive as they are good scouts. If you want them to go to a target, I think you can just shoot it with your ranged attack and they will focus on it.

Support your teamates!
Health spray is very powerful and in many cases better than the commanders health kits if used right. Best used with: Health Spray/Fade and Lerk/Umbra/Health Spray, all very very efficient and strong.

Evolve!!
Skill points to use as a gorge:
Movement : Adrenaline
Defense : Carapace
Sensory : Cloak or Scent Of Fear (if attacking)

Tricky Stuff
Web, Cloak, Await your prey (babblers)

Babbler Drop (drop babblers out of a vent)

Babbler Ladder (Shoot babblers and climb, extremely difficult and wont always work)

Health Spray and Pray (It actaully has range despite its image)

Known Bugs
While building a rescource nozzle, it is possible to get stuck, just f4 out or type kill in the console...sorry

While building a tower it is possible to get stuck, same thing

Babblers wont always fire, I recommend testing with it in certain areas, usually you need room.

Good playing, I hope this helps you!!

Sexcellent! I love the gorge, and for this i usually spend my time playing with -1 score

    Some things i usually do

    offensive:
    get adrenaline !!!!!
Tag along with a fade and spam health spray on him from around the corner as he is bombing towers.
If he retreats because the 'rines are coming, web the hallway and run with him (healing).

    defensive:
webs + cloaking + babblers + spray scare the **obscenity** out of marines

    building:
if you are gonna fortify a nozzle, start with building a random offense tower a bit upstream, this will delay a marine strolling to surprise you enough early for you to be prepared, the "building under attack" message will alert you. you don't even have to complete that tower, it will still warn you i think. Just place it and go back to the nozzle.

    GORGE POWER!

edit: Also Gorges are the only alien that can say "SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND!"

Also, you can use webs offensively. Sometimes you'll be by yourself building stuff and a lone marine who doesn't follow orders will wander by. Since you're a gorge you probably won't be able to kill him head on but what you CAN do is shoot webs near his feet. Usually you'll have enough health to do this. Then you can kill him and if he starts walking fast, shoot more webs. I really **obscenity** off this one marine doing this, he tried to go back to his base and I kept webbing him. I couldn't kill him right away cause I didn't have adrenaline so I kept running out of energy.

I can see why this was pinned! Gorges can be niftyrific offensive players in the right conditions!

I myself find webbing to be IMMENSELY powerful when used right. If you hear footsteps, a quick webbing right in front of them will leave most Marines stuck and stupefied, and then you can make a meal out of them at your leisure. Marines are simply helpess when it comes to webbing. I've pulled off webbing in the heat of battle many times, and left nothing but corpses behind. However, most other Gorges will just web empty hallways, and usually the Marines just get webbed and skitter back until they're unwebbed, or they just weld them away. Defensively placed webbing is only effective in narrow hallways in front of OChambers, otherwise its just useless webspam. A lot of Gorges these days also put their webbing close to the floor, so its much harder to see.

Make sure you aim up when firing babblers, so that they spawn in the air and not in the ground. You can tell if you spawned them in the ground because they slowly start to sink through it...

Aiming up also means the babbler flies a little way forward before hitting the ground, so you can create them around corners to go attack stuff without getting yourself into trouble.

I've had alot of problems with Babblers before, so I made a lan game as messed around with them for awhile, here's what I came up with.

    1) Babblers often won't appear if you're moving. This happens more often with forward/backward motion, rarely with strafing motion. Jumping/Falling doesn't affect Babblers.

    2) Sometimes Babblers won't spawn when you're standing still. This is dependant on the type of floor you are standing on. On some floor surfaces, Babblers simply will not appear. You still loose energy appear to create it but it never appears. Moving to a different floor type can fix this, unless they won't spawn on that type either. You can also fix this by jumping, Babblers will always spawn correctly when you're in mid-air.

Well honestly, I never ever ever had a problem with firing babblers as long as I jumped (it may slow down the firing of your babblers). And im sorry I didnt include this in this article, I used it as a reply to another gorge article. Babblers serve 3 main purposes, and no matter what people say these 2 purposes work/arent a waste of energy/bad.

    1) Waste the marines ammo:: Most marines over fire or waste there ammo, and its exactly what you want.

    2) Giving the gorge a killer:: If you web a heavy armor'ed marine he will simply run away from your weak spits/towers and walk away with roughly 100/20? something around there, and how fast will he be running after your slap down 3 babblers on his tail.. (while he is webbed), not very fast is the answer. A good thing to use with this is Sensory Tower, dont even use scent of fear if you dont need to.

    3) Take damage for you:: There isnt a game I see a marine run at you firing rounds of ammunition/grenades at your face while you RUN for the defence/offense towers. Its simply inavoidable. However when the marine fires rounds at you, you will not die if there is 3 babblers in his face while you are running, its simply HOW and WHEN you use the babblers, yes it takes brains, reflexes and skills, but its simply worth it. Or how about when you hear that fearful sound of grenades being fired, then you see your babblers took all the damage and killed the marine almost.

So I do not care what any of you nay-sayers say about the babblers, but in my book they will ALWAYS be a fearful force in the game as long as there are webs, marine ammo, and damage factors (and I think those will always be in the game )

So...lets recap and give you some general tips for babblers (Im not gonna write a babbler guide to get a bunch of hate replys, ill just simply put it here)

    Jump Jump Jump-Around
Always jump and fire babblers if your not sure you can stand and fire the babblers in that area (you cant always.)

    Play it safe
Fire the babblers to sap up damage for you while you run for the defence towers.

    Spiderman
If you web someone, immiediately fire babblers and web some more behind him, the natural reaction for a marine is to run backwards if he is getting hit by 3 babblers and 3 offense towers, so why not give him some more time to stand around and die?

    Babbler-Ambush
Use cloak, webs and babblers for easy kills, and I mean EASY kills.

No marines at home...thats a mistake
If you use cloak and sneaky maneuvers you can easily sneak your way into there base (depending on map) and launch some babblers at there spawn points and even build defense/offense towers in there base at the same time without them being able to get back in time. I dont reccomend this, but use it for fun and sneaky wins/kills.

    Panic-Picknick
Babblers can panic a marine into doing stupid stuff like...chasing you into a set of webs/offence/defence towers, so he can feel some glory/heroic powers until he is webbed and slapped with 3 babblers and lots of damage.

    Seeing is believing
Use sensory chambers to know when someone is coming, and use sensory chambers ALWAYS,even when you have 3, keep making them in good spots, they are undeniably good, hearing a marine is really really nice, no let being able to see them.

I hope this helped out all you babbler-haters to maybe see the light, If any of you marines have played against me you might be able to vouge for me that I am easily one of the best gorges out there. TRUST ME - BABBLERS ARE GOOD.

AIM : im l0rd (please message me with some tips/usefull info if you have any)

Did you read my post? I wasn't disagreeing with you on anything, just answering your question. I quite clearly said Babblers will always spawn correctly when you're in mid-air, you're in the air when you jump, that's what I meant if you didn't get it.

Jumping does slow down how fast you can fire. So keep and eye on what the kinda of ground you're on, always test it if you're not sure.

I would have to say that the best use for Babblers are as Decoys. The AI for them isn't good enough for them to be effective at killing most things, assuming they don't get stuck trying to get to the target. They are a gorge's best weapon, though that's not saying much, But every bullet they take would have been going for you or one of your teammates, that's what makes them worthwhile.

to aviod getting stuck while building as a gorge, 2 tricks:

    1. point UPward as you build, pointing down seems to make you stick in structures more often.
    2. backAWAY as you build. space = less stuck = less respawns.
  • ianskiianski Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7707Members
I more often see it occur with resource chambers since when you place it, no matter where you aim it'll always go in one spot. If you're standing on that spot.. it will appear ON you.. and you'll be stuck " ~kill " time.

As for another gripe that some people may not be aware of, any gorges building in the hives.. do NOT build any buildings together in a triangle shape.. IE, at the three points in an equalateral triangle. If you do this, and someone spawns/portals into the middle of these three chambers... they're stuck. I saw some silly person build three towers together like this and a lot of spawning skulks got stuck there.

To build a rescource chamber without getting stuck, build it from a distance, maybe 3-4 feet, it will stop the rescource chamber on the nozzle, and you wont get stuck, its simple, and it works, sorry I didnt post this again, but I hope this helps.

    a few tips:
It's simple as using him wrong.
    1. Always build an equal amount of defense Chambers to your offense chambers, movement chambers, and sensory chambers

2.dont randomly place chambers, one offense chamber in the middle of nowehere alone won't do much. Place them blocking entrenaces to hives, around corners, and around Resource Towers.

3.Remeber you can only use a certain amount of chambers in one area, group them close with defense behind offense and offense behind above or in front of sensory (they can shoot right threw it)

4.Place webs on the ground around charp corners with these gardens of chambers near so marines get stuck in front of 4 offense chambers shooting them up.

5.Movement chambers - place them in all your hives so your team has quick access

6.Use all your weapons: spray your friends, use babbles on enemies and enemis structures and If you are in trouble you can always use your primary.

7.When building anything as a gorge holding the use key will speed up the building process, it's not required like the marines need to do, but if you are low on resource's you probably have nothing better to do then sit around and wait for stuff to build, why not speed it up? - very helpfull towards the beginging of the game

8.Towards the end of the game go with your team to attack Marine bases, you can sit nearby their base and heal your attacking teamates with the spray.. also placing defense chambers outside of marine bases once you are ready to attack it is great, your team can fall back and regenerate quickly, just dont build everything blocking hallways, an Ono's cannot get by a huige structure like that easily. Simply placing 3 or 4 defense chamebrs against one side of the wall with 3 or 4 offense chambers in front of them will provide protecting for the deffense chambers and the same thing on the other side of the wall... that way marines will have trouble attacking just one side and may need to split.. one marine against 6 OC and DCs will not get far, even two will have trouble when they're being attacked from two different directions.. you may not even need the OC's there because your team could destroy the marines quick, but it's better safe than sorry... Start building on one side first and get 2 OC's and 2 DC's (in front) and then do the other side, it's safer than builiding each side slowly if low on resources. Now If possible get another enterance to their bases and do the same thing.
    here's what I mean:
    MB = Marine Base
    OC = offence chamber
    DC = defense chamber
    | ----------------
    |
    | MB
    | ----------------
    |DC OC OC DC|
    |DC OC OC DC|
    |DC OC OC DC|
    |DC OC OC DC|

I didn't put it there, but placing web on the ground around here is a great stratgey as well, the enemies will not be able to attack and will gett killed off by your chambers. Also get to the enterance safely and send out your bables! DESTROY!!!

9.Use your upgrade's: carpace, adrenaline and cloak rule with gorge
your team can run back out of the spawn and heal with offense chambers and your spray

10.Remeber how important gorges are to the team, they do the same things commanders do for marines. Provide spawns, protect bases, give health, everything!

11.don't go gorge if half your team or more already is, the more gorges oyu have the slower resources come in!, but not having any gorges will leave you unprotected

Well, one suggestion is, don't hold your fire buttong down while you have marines in front of you; often times, marines jump around and bunny hop, you'll lose sight of them, then bang, you're shot and you die. Chomp 2x, 3x max, and look around to make sure you didn't miss them. What I usually do is chomp once, and if the marine is still in front of me, chomp again, otherwise circle strafe, then chomp.

Also, don't run straight at a marine. Strafe left and right, may be whil backing up or moving forward to make the amrine lose ammo. enough times like that, the marine will only have pistols or just knife, and you can go in for the kill.

The only thing I'd like to add is about webbing:

I for one web those "empty" halls in the game, infact whenever I move I just web as much as possible. But what I'd like to add is the spacing when webing, like only make 2 strands every like...10 or 20 feet. Time and time again I see gorges creating 6 web strands in just one spot, those six webs can be easily taken out by one gernade, a flick of the wielder or a carless marine.

The way I approach webbing is from a "stalling" point of view, it takes marines much longer to get through a hall of webs that are spread out and hidden rather than bunched up in one area.

One thing that does my head in, are gorges that build resource towers towards the marine base.

There are plenty of resource nodes around the map, why choose to go in the direction of the marine base?

For a start, it forces gorges to fight, which is the last thing you want to happen. Forcing gorges to waste resources on defending the resource towers. Secondly, forces the whole team to defend the resource towers, when they should be concentrating on rushing the marine base.

My advice for gorges who don't know the map, is to wait awhile, and the initial rush of skulks will register as red circles.. THEN find resources away from the fighting (red circles). That way, less is spent on building offence chambers to defend resource towers, and defense chambers can be quickly built up to give the skulks a helpful upgrade.

    some more...

    - as far as getting stuck building normal towers, just dont build while moving forward and your fine. res towers have fixed placement so yeh, just stay further back, its not hard

    - I've often found that while firing babblers, they often actually get spawned UNDER floors or in between floor objects. Quite a few times i've been able to stand on one side of a door and release babblers under the floor towards a marine base. I have no idea if they actually did damage, but they certainly kept all the turrets busy while the fades attacked the other side.

    - build defence/movement/sensor towers in vents! its really great having some hidden, extremely hard to kill D towers regenning you as a fade while your having a fire fight with a marine or two.
