I'm a extremely competitive person, so I play to win, cuz winning is fun for me. However, there are times when I do stupid things for fun, i.e. infinite energy for parasite kills, HA/Welder try to trap aliens and kill them, etc. Most of the time though, I play to win, which is fun =P

What does that mean for playing NS? Well, I play for fun, and I play for my team to win. The keywords being "and" and "team."
Sure I can goof of at times, we all do. Usually though I'm totally focused with my competitive spirit to help my team to win. You might as well make me the avatar of teamwork because that's how strong my affinity towards that concept is.
And you know what? A good team has everyone working and communicating together, workign smoothly as each person acts like a piece of a collective machine. But a great team not only has that but going beyond the call of duty isn't just the exception, it is the norm. You want to win? You really want to win? Then talk to each other, work with each other, help each other, and care for each other. As one quote puts it, "there is no I in team." It was true when Cincinati lost in the NCAA Final Four Tourney. It is true in TFC. And due to NS's brilliant design, it is not only true in NS -- it is essential.

honestly i've found its easier to communicate and work together easier on the kharra since everybody can get anywhere pretty fast, even when they die they can be back in action quickly.
For the marines to win, everybody has to be a good teammate. A comm can't do everything by himself (like has happened in so many games that end up being lost) becaues everybody expects him to be able to do everytihng. I think that a comm can only be as good as his team and the team has to support the comm as well with information, possible suggestions from their POV, staying in groups of two to go re-cap nodes for him etc... If a team helps out the comm his job becomes much easier and he can concentrate on upgrades and overall strategy rather than babysitting marines. All IMO i guess.

I like Ns because of the teamwork element. I play for that aspect. Also, I really like it if everyone tries their best. It doesn't matter if they screw up or do somethign wrong, so long as they gave their all.
Winning is just a bonus for me
I play for fun, generally, a lot of games i've had a whole metric s***load of fun being on the losing team just as well as i have had a load being on the winning team. It's all about how you play it.
I'm glad about the server i play on, it bans for "viable" "winning" marine "strategies" such as spawncamping, structure blocking, mining active hives, etc, not because they're against people winning, it's because they're just not fun ways to play. Nothing is worse than being stuck in a spawn queue for ages because someone's spawncamping, there's no fun in spawning ontop of a mine, and it's not fun to be blocked into a corridor by a CC just because the comm has a little too much res to waste.
Fun is entirely up to the person, some people find winning and the competetive angle to be fun, others find just playing the game fun, win or lose. There's no real right or wrong way.

QUOTE (Precious @ May 24 2005, 03:32 PM)

Ok there are some people here that I would get very ticked off at if I played on the same team as them. I play for fun. Winning is fun. So you can say I play to win. The people I hate are those that play for fun at the expsense of preventing others from having fun. If you are not trying to win then you shouldn't be playing. Start your own server and fool around on it. Example if everyon on the team wants to win but all you want to do is build a big defensive base in a vent that is useless then you should be kicked. It may be fun for you but noone else. The same goes for poeple that go onos with no chambers.
I believe as long as your primary goal is to win, doing fun things is ok. For example. Gorge rushes or Lerk Rushes. Or everyone drop an RT. I played games where 10 people droped OC's. All of this was fun but it had the purpose of winning behind it. Just in a different way.
If I played only to have fun then I would never build an RT or base. I would only go were I wanted to go. I love to spawn camp all day long. Doing this kind of stuff ruins the game for everyone else.
In short everyone should be playing to win. How you go about achieving that win can be different than the norm which can result in some extra fun. I found when teams are stacked, teams usualy do something different from the norm.

I have already done that and the people that come to my server love it there are the odd ones which don't but the server is never empty accept for in working hours of course...

Fun is a term that has a different meaning for every person. I personally enjoy a hard fight, especially when the odds are against me. I like being a lerk against 6 HMG marines in a large room, or comming a team of pub marines against great alien players. Slaughtering the other team isn't a challenge, so I don't really find it fun at all. That's why I started competitive play and why I miss it so much now, nothing beats a game where you have to give it your everything in order to win, and even then it might not be enough. I've finished competitive games and actually been sweating as hard as I have after a 5 mile run. I've done the same pub lerking, it takes everything you have to fly around like that for an hour against a horde of marines.

All IMO i guess.
umm hello yea quoted for truth
ocs in seige spots, ocs to stop jp rushes, ocs to secure res
ocs in hives that are not secured
Who was the nub moaning about oc's in this thread, lol and when he comms he spamms turrets im sure of it.
Winning is just a bonus for me
I'm glad about the server i play on, it bans for "viable" "winning" marine "strategies" such as spawncamping, structure blocking, mining active hives, etc, not because they're against people winning, it's because they're just not fun ways to play.
Unless you mention ragers. They can go die.

That would be me, and no I'm not saying ocs are useless. I'm saying it's a bloody waste to drop ONE oc when there is a free node available and relatively close to the hive. 2 ocs with gorge backup, or 3 or more ocs strategically placed in an oddly shaped room where they can't be easily dodged, are indeed very effective deterrents to small groups of marines, however that's not what the threadstarter did. No, he dropped one oc, which I guarantee you would go down to even 2 marines with com backup, gorge healing or not. You can't possibly argue that that single oc would do more good for the aliens as a team than one rt.

Fire Eel didn't say, but I got the impression there were other gorges dropping RT's. If that was the case he did fine, if he was the solo fatteh he should have dropped an RT first.
Winning is fun, but sometimes loosing is fun too.
9 aliens vs 10 rine game on Eclipse
3 Gorges, including me
I didn't know what the 2 were doing, but I assumed they dropped RTs. Meanwhile, I know there was a hot spot for marines to pass through, so I dropped an OC first, and was waiting for my res count to drop another OC when the other aliens scolded me.
A) Testing bugs, and thus I am (usually) not having fun.
and
B) Playing against civ, and thus I am (usually) not winning.
It's a tragic world I live in.

Fair enough, drop res first im with you on that, just though i read a comment about how oc's are lame,no matter how, were or when you drop em.
Hehe good times drone btw your dinner
*EVERYONE* plays for fun. Some people have fun by winning, others by dicking around, and other people have fun in other random ways. Just because you enjoy doing whatever is fun to you doesn't mean that people who play to win are 'jerks'. I think it's your attitude that is the problem. I see way too many players who "play for fun" attempt to take some sort of moral high ground where people who have fun winning are bad, evil people. Don't do it please. You're just being a major hypocrite.
Or something.

If anything they get the moral low ground, because thier ruining the game for us, whereas our play style doesn't hurt them at all unless we start griping at how retarded it is to have 4 ocs dropped first thing where rines will just jump over them anyways.
