What Do You Play Ns For? Victory? Or Fun?

What is most important to you?
I just left from a server that I regularly play on.

The words of the people shocked me a little.

In the start of the game, aliens always have this tactic where a few Skulks rush to Resource Nozzels and place some RTs.

Now, I 've always seen that, and done that, and I am tired of doing the same damn thing, so instead, I placed an OC at an area where I know marines often pass through.

Player A : WTH? OC?
Me : Yea, why?
Player A : Place RT lah! OC useless!
Me : Not really. They can delay marines, and also, can be quite fun to use.
Player A : OC = WTH. Useless one, place RT leh!
Me : I always see alien place RT. Same tactic all the time. I play for fun, not to win.
Player A : Dude. Losing isn't fun.
Me : Sometimes it can be fun.
Player A : Winning IS fun. Losing isn't.
Me : I never said winning isn't fun, but losing can be fun too.
Player A : There is no fun unless you win.
Me : I play for fun, and not just for the victory.

It went on for awhile. And guess what? Majority of the aliens all told me that Winning = Fun. Losing is not fun at all.

Later, it went on to me being a noob, and that I was making alien team look really bad.

Are all the NS-players so victory-hungry nowadays?! Since when was winning = fun?

Share your thoughts please, thanks!

*emerges from the darkness to post*

I always play for fun. If someone starts to question my ways I usually keep my mouth shut up and continue (unless that guy's an admin). Usually playing for fun for me means playing with the team and doing something that makes me feel I'm useful and respected.

Sometimes I blame others for ruining my experience by being total newbies and not getting necessary things done, but I do that in an educative way. I don't flame people, I show them the error of their ways.

In that example you gave I would completely understand why would you put down an OC in the beginning of the game, though. I might ask some other person why he/she did that, but if the answer was "I did that for fun, I want to try a new tactic, people always place RTs in the beginning" I'd stop asking and let the good fellow build in peace

I hope this post will open some eyes and make others realize that NS is about fun, like all other games. Of course, it's rewarding to win a tight match, but where's the thrill if you do that systematically each and every round, repeating the same tactics? To me it would almost be like letting the computer play for you.

*hides in the shadows, once again*

It depends on the game and server. Sometimes you just wana play for fun, try something new or different.

Other times you get a good, evenly matched team with good skill, and things constantly moving backwards and forwards, hives going up and down, fades and oni dying, jp rushes stopped... (NS_Nothing <3) ....... GOD I LOVE THIS GAME!

I find winning more fun then losing. I play to win.

OCs are NOT fun. At most they are mildly amusing. OCs suck to play against, are a general waste of res, and prevent you from doing something acctually useful for your team like going fade, dropping a hive, dropping an RT, or dropping upgrade chambers.

We've all seen how the chambers work and what lifeforms you can get a million times. There's no fun in poncing around.

Try new strats sure, but ponce around on someone elses time please.

I don't understand what I play ns for. If I win I feel blah and I need to win the next. If I lose I get frustrated and want to win the next. I don't think fun even enters in, unless I'm just messin with people and tking, but I'm not really going to describe all that. Anyway, who cares what Player A says, I'm sure he's a balding fat virgin with a Star Wars baseball cap on. Honestly who cares.

    yess yess...

    ftf or ftw...who knows...

When i play as alien on my favourite server i usually go lerk very fast. Means that if they built me 3 mcs i will cause destruction to the marine team...
this results in a win very very often...but soemtimes when i ve done this for 2+ rounds i get really really bored...so i start doing

    a) something for the team
    b) ****(edit: has been censored..translation: starting to do useless stuff aka bs)
    c) something usefull and not-common

    examples:
    -->a) i do an Rt or 2...
-->b) i yell at the team to save for onos (everyone except for Rt Builders). Magically if i have the right guys with me they ll do it...lots of fun!
-->c) this server has a chamber vote (so no "i want that chamber harr **** off rest of the team!)...so i start shouting "SC FTW plzzzzzzzzzzz" and everyone votes for Scs...then i start placing Scs at weird spots...helps my team and its fun since Sc first are rarely used. Or im building a MC and an OC beside it and keep holding that room for about 7 minutes. Which is fun too...and a bit usefull ^^
(as marine is sometimes go for knife-kills-only if i am bored)

So...sometimes i play ftw but if i am bored im going for the fun!

i play for fun, in public servers if anyone doesnt like the way im playing, well they can smb

playing to win can be fun sometimes to, but only when both teams are evenly matched, and like someone else said, fades dieing and ha/jp rushes getting stopped etc. doesnt happen to much were i play, (but im glad to see more NS_ maps being played on the server now) so most of the time im just talking random jibberish over the mic

I find it fun to go afk 'till onos, then jump in the nearest pit I can find or kill in console. Oh, I also enjoy TKing hives when FF is on, and constantly giving the opposite side R4K by suiciding as whatever lifeform I am, or picking up equipment and running towards the hive with my knife/welder out. I'm sure other people don't mind, as it's in the name of fun.

i play for fun and only for fun. winning or losing mean nothing to me. the game could be a complete and total loss, but if it was hilarious and/or entertaining, then ive gotten all i logged in for.

but i have seen attitudes like that, not the simple 'i wanna win', which is only natural. the zealous 'my way or the highway' kinda attitude that has sent more than one of my friends packin when they tried to learn the game *since everyone knows that contrary to popular belief, theres more than just 1 way to win, even with OCs*

Strategically placed OCs early game can hinder marine advancement. Play for fun man, and don't bother even replying to the jerks.

Once more your exagerated sarcastic example has taken things to the extremes. I could counter by saying that structure blocking, admin cheats, or any mix of totally lame tactics are acceptable in order to achieve victory. In most people's mind, it is not.

When I am commanding, (as is normally the case,) I generally play to win. I do not start of aiming to make the game as enjoyable as possible for both sides. This is hard as each person enjoys different things. I will not however spoil the game for others.

When I'm with clan members / the teams have become uneven naturally, I will test out an odd strat. Good example was a relocate to the rafters on tanith's cargo. Totally impossible in a PCW situation, but fun to do in a pub. (For both teams, as it's variation, which makes things interesting.)

Edit: This post is over 3 paragraphs, so no-one will read it, but hey.
When I'm a marine, I'll play for fun always, only stopping doing my own thing if the commander gives a waypoint that I deem sensible or important. If he WPs me to place an rt at the other side of the map I'll ignore him, and notify him of my intention to do so, so he has a chance to ratify himself. Commanders who over-use the "select all" function irritate me.

As an alien, I tend to give instructions to those who will take them, and try to co-ordinate the team. (Zippy.zip inspired ) This could be taken as "playing for fun" as I'll use fun strats and enjoying doing them, OR "playing to win", as that's what results from the use of teamwork.

    I play for:
    1)Teamwork
2)Those cool game moments that you will have flashbacks for another year
    3)For atmosphere
4)If i see some cool space movie and i want to be the marine
    5)Novelty
    6)Atmosphere
    7)Friends

And thats why i started playing Enemy Territory recently again, love the teamwork, especaly the medics reviving system.

Purely fun i do what i like when i like, going fade and not using blink is fun, or charging as Onos in CO and running the entire marine team over and getting meself stuck on the CC to die a painfull death.. or cloak gorge into marine base and sit on the CC while chuckling and watch those marines run round looking for u. Funniest was aliens had 2 hives and marines had last hive secured and relocated there so i cloak gorged and all the aliens waited outside and i got into 3rd hive location and put last hive up and so while marines were busy killing that hive aliens rushed in and slaughtered, i got called a cheeky git for that.. i enjoyed every second...

Losing can be very un beconing just to run to ya deaths is entertaining....

Being webbed constantly by a gorge and then looking up to find a skulk on my head which then xeno'd..

    FUN FUN FUN

Ok there are some people here that I would get very ticked off at if I played on the same team as them. I play for fun. Winning is fun. So you can say I play to win. The people I hate are those that play for fun at the expsense of preventing others from having fun. If you are not trying to win then you shouldn't be playing. Start your own server and fool around on it. Example if everyon on the team wants to win but all you want to do is build a big defensive base in a vent that is useless then you should be kicked. It may be fun for you but noone else. The same goes for poeple that go onos with no chambers.

I believe as long as your primary goal is to win, doing fun things is ok. For example. Gorge rushes or Lerk Rushes. Or everyone drop an RT. I played games where 10 people droped OC's. All of this was fun but it had the purpose of winning behind it. Just in a different way.

If I played only to have fun then I would never build an RT or base. I would only go were I wanted to go. I love to spawn camp all day long. Doing this kind of stuff ruins the game for everyone else.

In short everyone should be playing to win. How you go about achieving that win can be different than the norm which can result in some extra fun. I found when teams are stacked, teams usualy do something different from the norm.

Trying to win = fun even if you lose.

THe thing that makes NS frustrating (on pubs) is when either the other team is majorly stacked or you team is just idiotic and no one is being useful/ using team work.

An OC can be good sometimes, but other players still need to drop the RTs and chambers.

Generally speaking, dropping ocs right off the bat is not the smartest thing to do unless you are gorge rushing, in which case it is necessary.

play for fun, but its respectful to not be a waste of res, especially if you're not a noob.

By definition, anything that is enjoyable or amusing is fun. However, I believe we use a more specific meaning for this word when we talk about it in a gaming context. Here's a link with more specific examples.

I play for fun... but you know what not is fun? idiocy. a single OC is a waste of 10 res beyond telling you marines are coming, and I'm sure that early in the game you would have already known.

placing OCs at the beginning can be devastating to the enemy. you can effectively lock them in their base. but you need a gorge healing the OC and you need some skulks to help defend the OC.

i say everyone should play to win but if you know you are going to lose then you should try to make the win difficult for the enemy.

i find it annoying when marines choose to run around with their knife out non-stop and they have like 1 kill and 50 deaths a few minutes into the game because these people actually cause their team to lose.

I play for fun, but fun is impossible to have if you have no chance of winning right from the start of the game, because that means 10-20 minutes of slowly strangling to death. New strategies are fine when appropriate, but have you ever wondered WHY aliens always rush to drop a bunch of rts? Res is painfully slow, especially in big pub games; the aliens need every rt they can get. There's no way dropping a single oc is more important than dropping an rt in the early game, and your teammates were justified when they got mad at you. You're effectively taking res away from them by not dropping that node.

    For the teamwork.

Now this may sound weird but I enjoy being in heavy NS battles, seeing the marines use teamwork (covering, welding, comm dropping handing out orders & them actually doing it) or the aliens use their sneakyness (skulk ambushes anyone ?).

I like playing NS because of this reason, because this is one of the few games where people actually (sometimes) play together and actually need eachother to survive. (sure a lone onos can do damage but what if a lerk umbras him ? or a fade takes out anyone that hits him ?).

fun, but getting spawn raped/lockdown sucks.

ns needs to be easier to end when your winning/losing

scrap that... certain maps need to be easier to finish on...
