Most of the history of the Phantasy Star universe doesn't apply to PSO. It just shares some similar things (general character designs, technique names, etc.) Nothing all too major to worry about.

When you think about it, the monthly system is better for PSO than a one time fee. Let's be honest with ourselves: neither PSO or Guild Wars is going to hold our attention for that long. Would you rather pay $20 for 2 months of PSO (you'll be more than satisfied by then) or $60 for Guild Wars, a game you are going to play a lot at first, but isn't going to last you anywhere near 6 months?
I guess you've seen someone holding a Musashi then....
Weapons are usually in singles or in pairs. Examples of dual wielded weapons are Mechguns (obviously) and Musashis. However they're much more slower to execute attacks with or have a really bad cooldown time.
You're lucky though. When I was Lv 5, I did a Ruins run, and Falz only gave 3 levels (2 gained from slaying stuff, 3 from Falz) The only good stuff I got were the not-so-high-levelled advanced tech disks <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
The 'Gameguard curse' is a term I made up tbh,it relates to my personal experiences to EVERY SINGLE GAME that had Gameguard on it. All of which were Korean-based.
MapleStory= a very buggy patching system came into place, ruining the game massively. Gunbound= became less fun after double metal axe, then starting to suffer bugging errors. MU= a very boring MMORPG,hard to level. RYL (Risk Your Life)= had a lot of problems also, but best of the Gameguard crop. (lag) PSO:BB= complete failure to do anything except take up 1gb of space. No patching available,no forum registering available.
All of them sucked eventually due to technical errors and I quit promptly. The Gameguard curse thus. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I dunno about the gameplay comparison disco... on a large scale, sure it's similar to GW buuuuut down on the level of what you're actually playing the difference is big enough for them to be two totally different games; especially in the combat and boss department :p
As for payment, I'm saving for the holidays so I kinda doubt I'll pay the monthly fee. To be honest I started playing PSO back before there was a p2p thing going and it had the same system as guildwars for cash (buy the game and not pay again ever unless you buy the expansion). Admittedly if I hadn't been totally distracted by RE4 I might've at least played for an additional month but I'm so hopped up on ideas RE4's given me I'm more likely to dissapear into HL modderage (can't mod for HL2; don't have the software you need for it :/ ) to make a prototype of something...
<b>suitepee edit:</b> um... first off PSO:BB is actually japanese, not korean. Secondly I think you'd like the game if you could play it. I don't have any problems with it so the only things I could maybe suggest is checking on your firewall/router and doing the whole DNS flush thing if you don't have a firewall/router :o
Had a friend who had played the game before, around level 30 we both went through the last 5 quests (Mines/Ruins) to reach Hard mode the day before. For the last quest we grouped up with 2 people from his team who used Death Scythes or something like that.. They rocked and made me feel inadequate without a shotgun variant weapon. Speaking of, anyone have a cannon or higher Hell shotgun? Lots of fun, though, too bad it's not "pay to play" fun.
dave, the weapons were either soul eaters (my fave!) or soul banishes... probably the eaters though.
It was my main weapon back in PSO DC and it's one you can get by doing a special sorta 'sub-plot' that runs through the single player missions <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Do a search for 'soul eater' on google and find a guide. It's quite a bit of work but I think it's more than worth it.
so I'm trying to get a certain lvl 100 mag (Deva), and I'm up to the step where I have an Ila, which gets good boosts to Power from eating Dimates. I evolved it to Ila by passing it to a Hunter at lvl 49 and having him raise it to 50.
The trouble is, now that I've passed the Ila back to my main RAcaseal, it seems to randomly turn back into the ranger lvl 50 mag, which I don't want, because it doesn't get much benefit from Dimates, and it isn't as cool looking :>
will it always spontaneously decide to re-evolve or is this some kinda bug?

Plus maybe 200-300 hours for lesser characters + any that were deleted. Gets expensive...
Disco - about your mag problem... The mag you get depends on your section ID (oran, bluefull, grenill, etc.) your Class (HU, FO, RA) and your gender. I dont think gender matters except for level 100 mags but maybe I dont remember properly. Anyway, the point is - depending on what character you are using, you will get a different mag. IF you use a mag cell it cant change to anything else and if you get one of the special lvl 100 mags I dont think it can change either.
look at the guides at www.pso-world.com for specifics

How do I use a Mag Cell 502? Do I need to wait for the Mag to get to level 100 before using it? or do I need to wait for it to get photon blasts? I assume I can continue upping it's stats after using the cell, but after it can't evolve.

The former.
I was planning to type up a nice long post on why you should do maximum attack, but I'm incredibly tired right now, so just <i>do the goddamn quest</i>, many times. Seriously, you want to do that quest. I'll tell you why later.
maximum attack certainly is good xp, the mobs come at you hella quick.
edit: so, even after a mag reaches its lvl 50 evolution, if you give it to another char, it will still switch its evolution to that char's lvl 50 evolution? I was under the impression you could just hand the mag over to the right kinda char at 50, evolve it to what you want, then hand it back and have it stay what you want...

Dude. I KNOW you want to give me one of those Sabers. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Oh, I also found the best quest for getting Rappy Wings. (Haven't tested it yet, but it's a pretty strong hunch)
edit: Oh, and Pulse, we should meet up and play some together.
edit2: I'd even be willing to do the laggy AOL quest if you really want. (I've done it once just so I would be eligible for prizes. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> )
what's the easiest way for me to get a decent weapon so's I can kill things faster? I'm a lvl 20 RAcaseal with just a lvl 3 pistol (lockgun) and I have no idea how you ppl manage to get your levels into the 50's...
DiscoZombie, if you kill Vol Opt, the Mines boss, you get a +15 Shot, which is the first ranged multi-targetting weapon you can get that I know of. Keep your lock gun for single targets. Thats how I fought anyway.
You can get your first high ground shot as a reward for beting vol opt in 3-3. You MAY be able to find a blue or even purple shot in normal runes if you are viridia, but don't hold your breath.
To find blue and purple shots, participate in max attack and look around the caves. The high drop rates during the event assure a good chance of finding one.
To get the CRUSH BULLET the first rare shotgun, participate in max attack and clear the forest. From what I can tell, they drop from gigaboomas.
After you get the CRUSH BULLET (which has even more damage then the red shot and steals hp with it's special attack) the rest of the generic shots become somewhat pointless until you can find a PHOTON LAUNCHER or a good 10-star shot.
As for attack power, RACaseals are in a bit of a bind. They have only medium ATP and ATA, and are known for having a lot of DFP. I suggest carbo-loading your mag with ATP and some ATA - but don't hold your breath. My level 50 RACast ranger with a level 100 power mag (so far) can't compete with the ATP of a hunter at all just yet.

Gah! I was out for much longer than I thought I'd be and now you're all gone. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> I hope some of you will be playing some more today.
So who actually still plays aside from myself, Pulse, Fjord and Psyke? <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I ask because soloing bores me, and since I can't really do max attack (computer chugs along too slowly to be competant at it) that I lack things to do in it now. Probably end up uninstalling it (not that it matters because the beta is over in like a week :|)

I've been meaning to try planetside. I think I may actually spend the 9$ and play PSO for another month at least. Then I can play the other episodes. (I've only ever played episode 1)
Question: When your mag evolves, does it take the color of the person who upgrades it? (and so then if it's given back to someone else, does it stay that color?) Also, should I go for a Sato or a Bhuma, i can't decide.
Sato: <img src='http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~psoworld/images/mags/shato.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /> Everyone has them, and they are deadly cute, but then again... everyone has them.
Bhima: <img src='http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~psoworld/images/mags/rukumin.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /> It looks kinda like a dragon, and I like dragons.
edit: And yes, it does get boring to just solo over and over again. I've actually been juggling PSO and Kingdom Hearts because my girlfriend and I bought that over the weekend. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
edit2: Regardless of which mag I choose, I'm going to need to make a female FO character to do the last level. (And this is why I ask about color of the mag thing)
Because of timezone differences lets say its boring to solo. Besides, it ends real soon <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

sorry seph... with the fact that the beta will end and I probably won't be bothered paying for it, it's just hard to motivate myself to play. Especially as it's mostly a game I spent like 3 years or so playing before anyways :p
Comments
suffice to say, it took me from lvl 7 to lvl 12 and I got a couple sweet weapons...
how does one dual wield stuff? or are some weapons just automatically a pair?
