setting gamma to 0.0001 and the global light intensity multiplier to -7 does not make a game scary. (not to hate on doom3, it would have scored 10/10 across the board had it not had "doom" in the title)

System Shock 2 desensitised me to horror. Before SS2, even Resident Evil scared me a bit, post SS2 I can't find a single game that scares me even a little bit.

I would sincerely love to see this guy as he approaches the final boss though, as even I was quite petrified at that point. There's something I find deliciously scary and offputting about descending deep into the earth, like in the Silent Hill games. It must be that feeling of becoming increasingly more isolated from any kind of trace of life. Anyone who has read 'It' by Stephen King will probably agree with me here, after following the kids into Derry's disused sewage pipes deep beneath the city in search of It, with no light (well, matches), no sounds, nothing. Total isolation of the self and senses.
I hope this guy recognises the bad guys bodyless 'evil laughter' throughout the game as what it is - cheesy pap. Quite what iD were thinking when they recorded those sounds I am not sure... "Your soul shall burn in hell!" Okay.
I thinkthe most disppointing thing about Doom3 was that after you get halfway through the game, you should feel pretty secure crawling through vents as you are NEVER attacked while in a vent. They should have had it so you are attacked at some point in a vent after many trips through them with no encounters, as by then I imagine most people would consider them to be a safe haven. A wasted opportuniy if you ask me...

Well, I enjoyed it thoroughly. If you've ever seen the two It episodes on TV, then reading the book is practically a must to banish it from your memory. But yes, It is a great book that encompasses some wonderful situations and emotions, and of course is hella scary (God damn it Cartman, stop saying hella! ).

Doom 3 spoilt its effect for me by constantly reminding me it was a computer game with its crappy, by the numbers level design and predictable pointless ammo caches.
Would it be such a problem for a computer game to focus on finding the enemy, fighting them and using the environment for once? Instead I get to play PacMan with a multi-million dollar front end. :/

Ugh. DO NOT play SS2 with the Rebirth models until you've beaten it with the normal ones.
The same reason Silent Hill scares the crap out of me is the same reason SS2 does... it leaves it to YOUR imagination to fill in the blanks. It gives a general idea, a voice, and then lets your imagination take off.
With the Rebirth models... you don't have to imagine anything. And it isn't scary, because it's someone ELSE's nightmare.. not yours.
Unfortunately, I can't say much about SS2 without giving away plot points. Just know that the main villain really makes the game... and you WILL be shocked, at least at one or two points, if nothing else. Plus.. the midwives scare the crap out of me! The Rebirth ones look like a hormonal kid's softcore. :b

When playing with headphones it feels like your ears are being violated whenever 'it' spoke. Besides the game becomes very very easy as soon as you get the pistol. Because its a gun for every circumstance. And then you get the assault rifle and whoa! its even easier.
That and I did not find the game scary at all. I don't know why but its not scary. Some of the design and stuff is sinister (EG Midwifes) but they were never scary. In fact it was almost obvious what was going to happen.
But then I seem to be blessed with an "Anti-Fear" shield or something....

Try playing through as Navy, and get hacking skills rather than run-and-gun monkey ones. Much more of a challenge, much less ammo, far fewer weapons. And you have to use style to get through... running away from enemies. Also, unless you're playing on Easy, ammo is scarce. Even if you're a Marine. And getting that assault rifle takes a good while, when you're trying to get Hacking high enough to unlock turrets.
