story & movie editing software question
We thought it was just one, but we just checked the traps....two kills. Both rats large enough that we're glad we bought the larger size traps.
Thanks to the wonders of USB extension cords and webcams, I now have last 17 minutes or so of one's life in 10-frame-per-second AVI. Took a little planning and patience on our part. Even though it was a fairly well-lit corner, the poor thing couldn't resist the smell of fast food chicken & french fries.
Haven't called the exterminator since he first came to give us traps, but we set up trap #3 (in view of the webcam, of course).
Problem: the only video format we can record with this webcam is uncompressed AVI. As in, "at 10fps and 320x240 resolution, an hour and a half fits into 12 and a half gigs of hard drive space" avi. Aside from wanting to cut out the boring parts where there's no rat, I also want to resynchronize the audio and video so that I can fix the problem of seeing the trap move about 5 full seconds before hearing it.
Any advice on video editing software that'll take this format, and let me make these fairly simple cuts & audio changes? Free is, as usual, preferred.
P.S: I don't have any webhosting of my own, especially not to host a 12gig file, so don't ask for the video this early
[edit]By the way, for anyone who plans to say "You should use humane traps!" Yeah. I know. But Orkin's not giving those away for free. On the contrary, the guy who came was rather interested in the idea of getting the video when we told him we planned to record.

I'm going to go start a thread on IMDB about it.

IMDB? Hey, I said I'd edit it, I didn't say you'd get bullet-time or pyrotechnics.
Though the sincerity of the rat's performance is probably better than that of the guy who's currently cast as Anakin in the Star Wars prequels...
Can you try to put him in a rat trap next?
Unless of course you wish to change it to the DVD format.. then Premiere is the best to go by. :-) Rawr for Video Editing. PS.. I would love to see it... either before or after editing.
Adobe Premiere isn't legal?
The next night my wife sees another one scurry across the floor. SO we buy MORE glues traps. As of last night, I'm 5 for 5 on glues traps, and I've set out 2 more this morning. Haet rodents who freeload in your house.
Can't help you with the video editing, but when I saw your edit I HAD to reply.
10 years or so ago my daughter and family moved to Florida and were living with the wife and I until they found there own place. I had a major squirrel problem in my attic and had set a trap up there to catch them (a cage, leaving them unharmed). It was a major ordeal setting and retrieving the trap as it was in the center of my attic and I had to crawl across many joists to get to it.
One afternoon I retrieved the trap and it had a rat in it. I went outside, dumped the rat in the river (duh) and came back inside to a wailing 6 year old who could NOT understand why Papa released the squirrels in the back yard, yet (tried to) drown the rat. I guess even at 6 he knew a squirrel is only a rat with a fluffy tail ...
Did you escape from the trap?

That's what I was wondering - think his tail is missing?

Maybe something more important...
I certainly wouldn't call it "director's cut" quality, but seriously, how much more time should I be expected to put into something like this on a weekday?

I think that to myself now and then. 2 things keep making me return to my otherwise-normal way of thinking about it.
1. I won't use the argument of "It invaded our home;" the reason we're in this spot is because at some point in history, we invaded its home to make ours. I will use the argument that by trying to share, it presented itself as a health risk, and I'm the one who's spent the past several thousand years learning how to use tools, instead of learning how to resist serious radiation and disease exposure and make children at an insanely exponential rate.
2. What I like more about the video is being able to see the thing in action, see how patient it is, see how it behaves around a new object. The first couple times I watched it I also admired its will to continue living, but thinking too much about that makes me feel like I'm taking too much sadistic pleasure in the event, so I go back to watching it poke its head out in curiosity.
[edit]If it makes you feel any better, trap #2 did work as intended, snapping the rat perpendicularly to the spine in what I would assume is the most painless possible manner. If it did take a few more seconds for it to die, at least it got the chance to lick the coveted peanut butter treat as it left this world.
Any ideas - I GOT to see this vid!
"error downloading codec" I briefly saw ... HELP?

Had similar problems. One time, it was because I was a nub with the encoding software. Another time, I just right-clicked the area where the video would show, and pressed something like "show video."
Hope it helps.
