I will wait before purchasing Battlefield 2. I purchased Battlefield 1942 and disliked it very much. Its graphics were poor but somehow were demanding on my computer, the netcode was very bad, and the gameplay was boring.
As for World War II games, I say keep them coming, but as long as they're at least up to the caliber of Call of Duty. That was a very good single-player game, even with the unrealistic aspects. I agree that the missions were often rather linear, and I hope game developers one day can design good games while offering exploration, but that may be some time.
I'm going to buy it and enjoy it regardless of what the retards in this thread say. Every game concept has been done before so why don't you shut up and stop playing games if you don't like repetition. Nothing is truely original anymore.
A random thing about the unlockable weapons, it was stated that none of them will be uber or awesomely powerful, and that they're for the most part there for status and personal preference. I for one WILL be using the G3 over the M16.
Oh and about the moron talking about a terrorist stealing an Apache, good job being ignorant and stereotyping. The MEC(Middle-East Coalition) that's in BF2 is equivalent to NATO or the Warsaw Pact, it's a group of nations allied for mutual defense, not a bunch of insurgent terrorist guerilla evil people blah blah. Granted, hopping into another military's vehicle and flying off without a hitch is unrealistic.

It CAN'T be fun. There is nothing new you could possibly add to a WW2 game anymore. The gameplay mechanics are all the same. The weapons are all the same. The vehicles are all the same. Balance is always the same now. The only thing WW2 Clone #84923 did different then WW2 Clone #84922 is that the graphics look a bit better and they decided to make an even more historically inaccurate version of the same maps, including the obligatory Normandy map.
Even single player is fairly stale. How many 'Take your squad and raid that German mansion' or 'Destroy the radar dish' missions can you possibly stand, that always take place in the same carbon-copied mansions, or the same carbon-copied 'GenericMuddyField'? And of course EVERY game has the obligatory 'Squadmate is talking and gets shot by sniper' scene. Most of the objectives aren't even real OBJECTIVES. "Destroy these tanks". "Oh no you failed to destroy one of the tanks, the war is over, the Nazis won!"
The only possible new spin you could put on a WW2 game would be if you ran around as a Nazi searching for Jews hiding in buildings. And you'll NEVER see a game like that. In fact, how many WW2 games do you see that even involve the Death Camps? None. Most of WW2 is too taboo to put in a video game, what's left is just the generic war. And I can't imagine any situation that they haven't done yet.
The ONLY last thing I enjoyed about a WW2 game was Call of Duty's Stalingrad, which was only fun for the first five minutes until once you got a gun, you realized what a generic, linear, and ridiculously inaccurate simulation of Stalingrad it was. "Hey! It's the city hall (or something) which is conveniently located in this box canyon of impenetrable buildings! Oh, a convenient hole was blown in a flat, boring brick wall, leading to a useless hallway filled with impenetrable locked doors and only one way out!"
It'll be a cold day in hell before I ever witness anyone saying WW2 games are good and let them get away with it.

Very nicely said. Best WW2 FPS ever is Red Orchestra for Ut2k4(minus the lame tank maps)
anyways BF2 could be good if done correctly, boasting 100 people being auctaly played is a large thing to say. I for one hate the BF netcode, and its hit detection. If that is fixed in BF2 it might be worth 50 bucks.
I will fight you on saying that Red Orchestra is the best WW2 game. I believe Forgotten Hope is by far better. Even though its off the BF1942 engine it still kicks major butt. Sure the infantry battles are exactly the greatest but its still an awsome game.
The thing I look for in these types of games is *realism*. Although I expect in BF2 that a M1A2 abrams cant penetrate a T-72 frontal armor at 5 feet is expected. I just cannot wait for FH to move over and truely show its potential.

I gotta agree with Poofle for the most part. It's true that a lot of these faults can be applied to most games, but they're quite common in WWII FPS'. They get away with it because people seem willing to accept it in those games.
Compared to that, the original BF was a breath of fresh air.

I'm really looking forward to this game, the command interface reminds me of the command map that you could use in Tribes 2, when used properly that was awsome.
It tied in such things as sensor towers and deployable sensor probes that when functioning provided LoS on units with in range; putting them high up gave them greater range as well. When someone actually sat an just used the command map, relaying to his team mates where the enemy was attacking etc it rocked!!
I can only imagine how cool this would be in BF2, say if there was an AWACs bird that had long range LoS (like in DC where a fighter's radar sweepo picks up enemy units but over a much longer range) then someone using the command map could direct fighters to intercept enemy threats. Likewise an AWACs bird would then become a target to deny the enemy a valuble asset.
I just hope my PC can run this at something near a playable standard

As for World War II games, I say keep them coming, but as long as they're at least up to the caliber of Call of Duty. That was a very good single-player game, even with the unrealistic aspects. I agree that the missions were often rather linear, and I hope game developers one day can design good games while offering exploration, but that may be some time.

Yes, games are too repetitive and linear. Linearity isn't a bad thing.
anyways BF2 could be good if done correctly, boasting 100 people being auctaly played is a large thing to say. I for one hate the BF netcode, and its hit detection. If that is fixed in BF2 it might be worth 50 bucks.
The thing I look for in these types of games is *realism*. Although I expect in BF2 that a M1A2 abrams cant penetrate a T-72 frontal armor at 5 feet is expected. I just cannot wait for FH to move over and truely show its potential.
Shouldn't you mean your tired of messing round as an American soldier?
A WW2 game that involves you playing as anyone other than a yank would be a plus imo.
In Soldiers: Heroes of WWII, you get to play from the UK, USA, Russian and German sides. Beware, though; the game's harder than rock candy.
I gotta agree with Poofle for the most part. It's true that a lot of these faults can be applied to most games, but they're quite common in WWII FPS'. They get away with it because people seem willing to accept it in those games.
Compared to that, the original BF was a breath of fresh air.
