Okay, I'm just about to give up here, because either you guys are either trolls or are so blinded by your own "we only talk about whole-game balance" outlook that you're missing the point.

So tell you what.. I will grant you whatever frigging balance argument your making. You say the SG is hugely underpowered and you'd rather use an HMG or your welder or whatever, fine by me. I'll go with that.

What I'm talking about is that the marines have a weapon that is cheap to acquire, and is as effective, if not more effective, at close range (not running into close range.. it's underpowered then, and not running away from close range, it's underpowered then, right?) than any other weapon they have. Ergo.. if the map was a tiny little box just big enough so that you couldn't get out of the alien's bite range.. in that *very* specific situation, one in which the alien should have a serious advantage, which is the best weapon? I tend to think the SG is the best because it's instant. The HMG is a very close second because it's just shy of instant, however, against a skilled enough alien, it's not fast enough.

Should the cheapest weapon available be the one best for the situation that supposedly favors the alien?

Yes because it's only a threat at close range (the only range where aliens are potent) instead of all ranges.
