CD Burners...hmmm?

1. I don't havea spare $25 to spend on a CD burner. In fact, the only drive I have is a DVD-Rom drive that sounds like it's going to shatter the disc that's in there whenever it starts spinning.

2. There's currently a 20GB HDD where the second CD-Rom drive would go.

3. Discs are expensive, if I had $25, the thing would be useless, because I'd have no discs.

4. My computer was made by Compaq, and is liable to explode in the near future.

5. I'd need software to split the 3.5gigs on to different discs, which doesn't seem very feasible to me, in which case - I'd need a DVD burner...and they're most certainly not $25.

6. The internet connection at school here sucks more than a Hoover. I get a measily 80kb/s with Steam (yea, that's a whole 8 kilobytes a second, woot for 56k speed T1s...bastard ResNet). So, if I get to reformat, I get to not download the game effectively (and the only reason 90% of it's on my HDD anyway is because I downloaded it back at home).

7. If steam ever goes down and you format your drive afterwards you can kiss your HL2 goodbye. Whereas a disc could be hacked to at least let you still play the game in 20 years (assuming you take good care of those CDs, or re-copy them every few years). How else can you say, "Yes, little Timmy, back in my day, we had games like this!"

8. On Esuna's point: How do I read the manual on my computer while I'm taking a dump?

9. Where's the materials, which - in case of emergency - can be burned to provide warmth? $50 for a box and discs, or $50 for intangible data...My money is on the person with the box living a warmer life once we nuke ourselves to nuclear winter.

10. Way too many people are going to be downloading crap from Steam for the next few months...I enjoy my games lag free (...especially when loading), thanks [plus, 2 weeks to get your game started seems a bit long].

You buy your HL2 on Steam. I'm going to buy mine at Target (...because it's the only store around here that will have it...), and then I'm going to flaunt my box at you .

Your Steam account goes, your HL2 CD key goes. 1: Meh. Don't expect them to get any cheaper though
2: Put it where the DVD-Rom drive is.. or get a combo drive
3: I can get them for little more than 50cents Canadian. How is that expensive?
4: Okay, that is a good point. meh. You get what you paid for
5: WinRar.
6: If your connection at school sucks, talk to who ever might be incharge of it to see if they can do anything...
7: If you format your drive you just use the CD backups you made of the steam GCF files with the help of WinRar to make them smaller =P
As for when Steam goes down, I don't forsee that in the near future, and when it does happens, one could probably bet on someone emulating it fairly soon after... If not a fair bit before
8: Ever heard of those things called Printers? They are these magical devices that allow you to transfer digital text on to paper. You might want to look into one. They really are quite facinating.
9: Er.. Considering the kind of paper those boxes are made of, you have an entire 5 seconds more heat than me. Oh nose. After the heat you'll be colder than before anyways.
10: Considering people have already been downloading parts of HL2 off steam without much trouble, I would think that this is a null point.. Anyways, as long as I get the preload finished before its released, the state of Steams Bandwidth will have nothing to do with my single player experiance.

You buy your HL2 at Target. While you're driving there, finding the game, waiting in line, driving back then installing, I shall be playing the actual game, Which I find more enjoyable than a box.

I said UHARC it. Its an ultra compression method that is extremely nice. I saw some programs of questionable legality compressed from 2.4GB down to near 240mb.

That seems like it'd be expensive to get the program...sure you've got your rar-ing and zip-ing with free trials all over the place, but something with such an efficiency would probably cost a ton.

Plus, I think it was 2.0gb compressed, 3.5gb uncompressed. And I don't think, despite how nice it sounds, it can compress something that's been compressed so much already.
