Side note: be absolutely sure to play it with a character that has below 8 intelligence - but only after you've completed the game at least once with a "normal" char.
If you can play SNES games, then I'm assuming graphics won't bother you.
In that case, I suggest:
Star Control II
If you want the original DOS version, I can send it to you if you want. One thing I would suggest; don't bother downloading the voice acting files... absolutely horrible.
Reasons to play? Huge number of choices... absolutely stupendous dialogue, the combat portion of the game, while basic, is surprsingly fun. And if for some reason you don't want to play it, you can set the fighting to a 'Cyborg', which basically makes it even more like an RPG in that you choose what ship you think would best fare against whatever crap you need to fight.
And it is one HELL of a world to explore... it's an old game, but still fun. You can find more info on it here.
And how about adventure games? I haven't played the second one, but I thought Syberia was pretty nifty. I've also heard really good things about The Longest Journey, though I haven't played very much of it so

As for good RPGs, I'd take a close look at Gothic 1 & 2, both being very fun and offering plentiful opportunities for exploration. Arcanum is very nice, as well, although I was dissapointed by the ending. And there's of course going to be Vampire by the end of the year.

Both are probably the best RPG's I've ever played, even though I never finished the second, I couldn't beat the final boss (damn he's hard). Excellent story, lovable characters, etc. You can find them for playstation, or you could probably aquire them elsewhere. I think it was originally for the SNES.

My Favorite Single-Player Games of Any Genre:
No One Lives Forever 2 (I didn't play the original much, and I think the second title is much, much better), the entire Baldur's Gate series (including the expansion packs), Deux Ex (and maybe DX:IW), Planescape: Torment, System Shock 2, Doom 3, both Max Payne titles (there are lots of great mods for both of 'em, too), Hitman: Contracts (I know, I know), the entire Homeworld series, Knights of the Old Republic, the entire Grand Theft Auto series, Half-Life single-player (including Opposing Force and Blue Shift), Halo (the level design isn't *that* bad), most of the Command & Conquer titles, Final Fantasy VII (it's the only FF game that I've played), and both Splinter Cell titles (or any other Tom Clancy-brand game, for that matter).
I'm probably missing a few, but that should give you plenty to chew on.

You can skip the first Lufia if you like, but definately go through the second. It picks up in pace after the couple (small) dungeons.
Here's at "alternate" walkthrough for Deus Ex, While I don't usually use walkthroughs or stuff I found it pretty entertaining and it's a good reason to play through the game again.

You only get faulted if you give Navarre a reason to go on a shooting spree. Generally, you can play the game as violent or nonviolent as you please; the only difference will be a few dialogue changes and a number of rewards depending on your playstyle (generally, you get better stuff for paying mind to innocent bystanders). None of them are truly necessary to complete the game or to enjoy it to its fullest.

The only real penalty for killing everyone in Castle Clinton is not getting some AR ammo, which becomes very common in the next part of the game anyways. I think I'm depriving myself of a lot, but I could never finish Deus Ex... I'm a huge perfectionist, and I played through the first two missions like 5 times each, trying to kill enough people for the metal-laden people to like me, but few enough for the army dude to like me... is that possible?
omg you must be my long-lost twin. Praise be to you. those are my 2 fave games ever, too. and if you say Arx Fatalis is like them, I MUST find and play it.

We on this afternoon, then?
Erm... Those are conflicting goals. Either, you kill NSFs, thus getting on good terms with Navarre and Hermann (god, I hate his accent), or you take the nonviolent approach (more specifically: Don't kill the terrorists holed up inside Castle Clinton, but sneak in by the backdoor.) and please Carter. Personally, I'd go for the latter, if only because it scores you a full stock of assault gun ammo.

Although the way I played I finished the game with an entire stock of 10mm, 30.06, 7.76mm, and darts, plus a large amount of plasma ammo and all the other types because I'm really weird.

ah so there's no way to please everyone eh? alas.
anyway I could have sworn I didn't even kill anyone -- I used nothing but knock-out darts and blows to the back of the head the whole mission, but carter still reprimanded me...
however, when I entered castle clinton I DID cause enough of a scene for the other troops to burst in the front and kill some terrorists -- did their kills count against me?

Yeah, Disco, seeing as you could have prevented their deaths he holds you accountable.
may as well ask 1 more off topic question: is that the only time I'll have to be so careful? in subsequent missions will I be able to open up on whatever and whomever I choose? =P
because if there's one thing I hate, it's games where you're given lotsa cool weapons, but if you want a good score you're not allowed to use them...
Hitman 2 is my favorite in this category... for a perfect rank, you have to kill basically NO ONE... your reward for pulling this off? BIGGER GUNS!
I tryed those for about ten minutes and quit... What would you say are the good parts of the game? becasue from a short preview I didn't encounter anything that really caught me...

Bah you have to give it more than 10 minutes, that's like judging a book by the cover. Or maybe the first page.
Story is great, the combat system doesn't get in the way (like spending hours leveling up, or other treadmill tasks) and has a fair amount of depth, the puzzles are interesting, and overall it's just a very polished product.
You can skip the first Lufia if you like, but definately go through the second. It picks up in pace after the couple (small) dungeons.
Obviously it contains Spoilers and bad things if you havn't coompleted the game yet. So...be warned and stuff. Link
But yeah, definatly try and find and play Planescape: Torment. Well worth it.

You got us wrong there - feel free to infiltrate the backway with guns blazing (be weary of the guys with the flamethrowers, though).

You don't ever have to be careful. The only real penalty for killing everyone in Castle Clinton is not getting some AR ammo, which becomes very common in the next part of the game anyways. Never mind the fact that you will get more ammo for many different weapons from the corpses of your enemies in Castle Clinton than you ever will from Carter.
