It's looking fairly gorgeous, and that's after I've played Doom 3.

Personally, I prefer Half-Life 2's nitty-gritty, real approach over DOOM 3's plastic/rubber look. Plus the human models in DOOM 3 suck.

    That being said... I love HL2. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Same here. Doom 3 has the lighting, but HL2 has the characters, textures and weapons. Just look at that .357!

Mmm. Models that don't look like they are made of polygons.

Don't get me wrong. Doom 3 is the prettiest game I've seen to date. But all the characters look like they are made out of polys. Seriously, they could have taken some of the detail out of the hands to make it so the heads don't look like 10 sided dice.

First of all, look at the scenery, especially in the strider shot.

    ITS MADE OF CUBES.

Seriously, look at it. I barely see any curved architecture, any detail, anything at all to make it more immersive. It looks like it was built on the HL1 engine. Doom3 has some of the most spectacular level design I've ever seen, with a very attentive approach to 'pointless detail', which consists of pipes, wires, hanging out, sparks, panels torn off, etc. One of the parts of doom 3 has a corridor collapse and you see all the wiring and crap that was behind the walls buried in the martian soil, that is all torn up, shredded, and sagging out now that it collapsed. It's stuff like that that makes great level design. I've not seen anything in HL2 levels that looks as spectacular as anything I've seen in D3.

As for the Antlions, why are they radioactive-urine-yellow? Could you GET a more repulsive color scheme? Ever see an Imp in Doom 3 up close? (If you haven't had a chance to yet, there's a big part in the game where you will) The tones, the bump mapping, the colors of it all look natural. These antlions look like the bugs out of Starship Troopers, and might I add, that is NOT a good thing (You really want your overhyped game to look like one of the worst movies of all time?)

Look at the textures on the antlions themselves. Notice that it's plain and flat in a lot of places. Most obvious on the foreleg claws, the texture is one shade and smeared around like a child's fingerpainting. The teeth and the orange parts are the same. The shadows on the leg itself are banded and very unprofessional looking (In the 'Doom 3 Released' thread, someone in there has a picture they took - the shadows on the guys hand have very obvious 'bands' of darkness, caused by bad graphics rendering). And look at where they're fighting. Planetside had more convincing landscaping then that. Give it a grass texture, plant some really bad-looking bushes, and it makes it grass? Seriously, ever see the grass in Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow?

As for the magnum, looks like the magun in Firearms TBH. The only shot I thought 'Neat' on was the sun lighting on the last one.

I think that like DOOM3, HL2 needs to be seen in action to be fully appreciated. There's a *lot* of reflective work going on in that first shot - metallic reflection on the gun as well as a glossier, wetter reflection on both the glove and the ant lions themselves. Do you guys remember the tech demo released a while ago featuring the large ant lion standing on the rooftop? Jaw-dropping. It's lighting effects that make both of these games stick out, but in different ways. DOOM3's doing amazing things with shadows; HL2's doing amazing things with light. Remember the reflection on the roof, the glare of the sun in a few shots, the overbrightening effect of the sky from inside that wooden cellar-area.

I don't think I've ever seen lighting that so closely mimicked *real life*, personally. A lot of games mimic movie lighting (reference: lens flares on light sources), but this is the first, IMO, that's tackled RL™ and done a decent job with it.

Anyway, there's plenty of smack to talk about screenshots. I think it'll be safer to wait for the game itself. Look at Gabe & Tycho's comments about DOOM3... they totally stand by their initial impressions (and so do I), but the final, actual experience of playing DOOM3 was completely unlike anything they'd expected. HL2 may similarly surprise us.
    ______

Oh, and sure, the mapping in HL2 may be boxier than DOOM3's... but DOOM3's drawing a corridor at a time, a room at a time, two rooms. HL2's drawing a square mile of city.

And yeah, the yellow-and-purple antlions are a little ridiculous.

I liked the lighting in that part, but not on the antlion. The antlion had a sheen on him at many angles that made it look almost as if he was soaking wet. The same lighting effect was on the steel rooftop shingles. I think it was overdone and unnecessary, much like having the same sheen on rusty pipes in farcry. In 'RL™', you find a beetle and the beetle's exoskeletal system will have a slight sheen to it, but nothing like a blinding bright reflection like the antlion did. It was just cheesy.

"Oh, and sure, the mapping in HL2 may be boxier than DOOM3's... but DOOM3's drawing a corridor at a time, a room at a time, two rooms. HL2's drawing a square mile of city."

Two years ago I'd have nodded and accepted this comment, but look at far-cry. It's rendering complex terrain and about 6 billion POTENTIAL polygons worth of foliage. Farcry had a very well designed scalabilty system that degraded quality at long ranges, but in such a way that you couldn't recognize it had. Its little things like that that have the HL2 engine trumped in so many ways. The fact that they couldn't get what I personally see as an already obsolete engine out before the other 2 'Big and Pretty' games kinda killed HL2 for me.

Before playing FarCry I kept thinking 'Man I really want to see those Combine soldiers up close!' After I thought 'Eh, the strider looks cool.' After playing Doom 3, all I can say is that HL2 better have a super kickass story because that's all it has going for it now, IMO.
