Wha? You must be new here, because Steam gets "bashed" often. The posters become so passionate about the argument that the topics are locked: most threads turn into flame war. So no, Steam gets criticized just as often as WON does - more so, actually. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Pay attention. The mods usually get in a tizzy over Steam bashing but WON bashing isn't prohibited.

Did it? I don't see how, and that's not even counting Steam's Friends and advanced server finding capabilities. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Because the client side bullet registry worked roughly twice as good.

I don't choose WON over STEAM because of stupid things like a damn chess board, but of how it preformed in game.

And WON preformed miles ahead of steam. No hitbox issues, just so smooth. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Hitboxes are to do with the relevant mod, not Steam. Honestly, if anything I get better pings in Steam than I did in WON.

Silly childrens, WON didn't have codename gordan, and thus is pwned by steam bigtime.

[edit] <span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'><span style='color:red'>WARNING</span></span> the above message is sarcasm, just so no one gets confused again.

You don't even need Steam to play Codename Gordon, just flash, and CG sucks anyways.

Steam has only been out for what, a year I'm guessing? It's already as smooth as I ever remmember WON being.(except for the bullet hit registry/whatever error) With WON, you had to navigate through 2 or 3 different menus to get to the server list while Steam requires one click after the program is running. The only time I had trouble with Steam was the day after it came out and I tried to DL it and run it while the network was at a stand-still with hundreds of thousands trying to DL/update at once not to mention the updates required for the login to work right for me. So I deleted it all of my PC 'cuase I was too lazy to let it update and use all my system resources for half a day. I complained and grumbled about never using it ever again. Then about 6 months later I tried it again when there weren't so many DL/updateing at the same time. It worked smooth and perfectly and I've never had trouble since except maybe during the first few hours of a major update. WON was great in it's time, but it's now what, 6, 7 years old? It's about time to change. And, yes it can be seen as one step closer to HL2. Only when Valve is confident enough with steam to discontinue WON would they ever consider releaseing something as major as HL2.

Do I really have to put a </sarcasm> note at the end of every friggin post like that I make?

If that "sarcasm" was actually funny or witty in some way, I would have known. Because, you know, those are usually the reasons people use sarcasm, and on the internet, there's no way to tell without them (or, as you said, those ever helpful sarcasm tags).

Oh, and yes, many people use "Childrens" when they are serious, and no, I'm not being sarcastic.

I would ask you if you are new to the internet, but it's obvious that you aren't.

I do seem to recall WON sharing an initial run similar to Steam. Buggy at first, but it gradually got to a point where noone had any complaints with it...

So people can say Steam rulez, WON sucked. But the fact of the matter is WON was a perfect system before the introduction of Steam.

Excepting for the fact that it was owned and operated by Sierra rather than VALVe, the fact that people finally came out with working CD keygens, and that the validation methods could be bypassed incredibly easily with a Winsock mangle-tool, yeah.

With steam you have to wait 10-30 to log in with your steam account, enduring Steam bandwidth's theft as you download CZ, to click on the NS icon to go into the game and if you wanna switch game you have to exit. Steam is totally not smooth..

If its taking you that long to log in with steam: Thats something wrong on your side. For me it takes 30 seconds.

Also- WON was NEVER a good system, even now. Not only did it have that minimize bug that everyone hated- but it also took forever to find a server, took forever to do ANYTHING AT ALL. And then when you were in-game, guess what? Every time you hit esc, it'd SHUT DOWN THE RENDERER, let you do your thing, THEN START IT BACK UP AGAIN! WEEEEstupid.

I have STEAM starting up on boot. By the time I'm actually ready to play (I don't want to play NS before my machine has finished booting...) STEAM is already running and ready.

STEAM was better than WON years ago, and STEAM is getting better in every patch. So many things that annoyed me about STEAM have long been fixed or improved.

Besides, my remaining complaint, that STEAM takes too long to start up, (Yes, I do agree with you to a certain extent), is improved regularly, as many patches have been released that reduce the startup time. In fact, there was one just the other day. Eventually STEAM will start up very quickly. Give them time to perfect it.
