So.. Steam is large and hairy and Won is comprised mostly of artifical parts and tends to look in through windows?
  • eedioteediot Join Date: 2003-02-24 Member: 13903Members
I will miss WON.. i have many memories with that noble being.

    RIP..

Also, WON, you might want to not talk to STEAM before you die.. I cant help but think of what you will feel like when you find out what has become of your empire <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Why I liked WON better than STEAM: Every time i tried to install steam, it cosistently does not work. I know there are *some* people who it works perfectly for, first go, but for the majority of us, there are too many problems, and too hard to fix. You just randomly get all these errors.

And the whole worry about cheaters is still there?!?! I don't know if there still are cheaters [can anybody clarify this] but just the other day there was someone accusing of cheating <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

And yes, counterstrike sucks. DOD sucks. in fact i really hate most of the games now <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> You gotta play it as just a muck around 10 minute game, otherwise you get really **** off at all the flaws.

    meh.

    WON > STEAM

but won is being put to rest

    *salutes*

Good riddance. Most of the problems (That I never even experienced, anyway) have been sorted out with Steam and it's now a great system to use. You can still play old versions of NS on Steam (With a little work for 1.04, I think. I'm guessing here, though.) and you don't have to have Counter-Strike or DoD or anything.

Actually, for 'the majority', Steam works perfectly. That's why they're killing off WON. When less than 3% of players have a problem with actually running Steam (as opposed to whingeing about having to use it), it's seen as being at a stage of development where some of the problems for certain people are caused by those people themselves.

After all... of course Steam won't run if you never download it and give it a chance. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Good riddance, WON. You sucked.

It's not that steam doesn't work, it's that WON worked much, much, much, much better
  • MantridMantrid Lockpick Join Date: 2003-12-07 Member: 24109Members
Actually, WON never worked for me. Ever. Double-Click on a server, try to connect, get disconnected, apply 3 filters to server list, no response. I had to use GameTiger and enter individual IPs.

    Rot in hell, WON.
  • TalesinTalesin Our own little well of hate Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7710NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators
And Steam will be even better, once it's had the development-time WON has. Hell, Steam's already off to a *much* better start than WON was, when it was first introduced.

Did it? I don't see how, and that's not even counting Steam's Friends and advanced server finding capabilities.

I admit, I used to HAET HAET HAET steam, but now that its settled down and gotten better i only mildly dislike Steam itself, but the benefits of the l33t stuff added to HL outweight it. Autocomplete in the console + command history = teh win for debugging SECRET PROJECT B

So... That means they are going to release HL2 soon...right? RIGHT?

    Maybe.

An optimistic view would be "its one tiny step closer", whereas a pessimistic view would be "the two things aren't related", but it it isn't a big step forward in getting hl2 out the door either way :P
  • eedioteediot Join Date: 2003-02-24 Member: 13903Members
    optimistic - omg.. hl2 is coming out in the next few days.. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->:D

Totally unrelated. Remember- they have 2 dedicated people working on steam, and 50+ people 75% HL2 and 25% sidecrap(including steam)

Wha? You must be new here, because Steam gets "bashed" often. The posters become so passionate about the argument that the topics are locked: most threads turn into flame war. So no, Steam gets criticized just as often as WON does - more so, actually.

He probably didn't get a taste of the Steam forum the first few weeks after steam was released either. That would have wizened him up some.

LOL, winds of change are finally blowing in....

For the uninformed, Steam had a sucky start, but not as bad as WON.

Especially when you could only play HLDM once a week, and get banned because of a typo in the code :\

Well, WON had its merits, but it's finally time to let it die. The only way we'll be able to play HL is through Steam or sticking to regular HL LAN.

Accidently bringing steam console down is alot worst than WONs console. No I am not going to bind the console key ~ to another.

Steam was evil until I upgraded from WinMe to Win2k. I just won't run with ME without crashing. Dunno why.

Because the client side bullet registry worked roughly twice as good.

I don't choose WON over STEAM because of stupid things like a damn chess board, but of how it preformed in game.

And WON preformed miles ahead of steam. No hitbox issues, just so smooth.
