My buddy was just telling me last night about the best CS video he's ever seen in his life. It was was the first video ever done by this all female clan, and he said he blew away almost all other videos he's seen by elite clans.

There is no real problem with a girl letting her femininity known in a game, as long as she doesn't make a huge deal out of it. I would assume that girls that game want exactly that: TO GAME. They aren't looking to date some skinny kid with glasses, they're looking to kill. Immature little boys with their "OMG T3H G|2LXOR!11111!!!!" need to seriously let them alone.

If a chick wants to be flirty as a joke in a game, that's cool. I did it in a mod I used to play, we had a chick that would come in, some of us would have "sex," and it would be all good. We were joking, she was joking, and there was no problem. However, the girls that are serious (which many of them are) I would assume get extremely annoyed with the bad pick up lines and cracking voices of kids who are just experiencing the wonders of internet pornography (nothing against porn here, I have at least a gig's worth). A girl who games does not mean she is a girl who will do anything with a kid who is the point/click master.

On the flipside, a girl that comes in, owns, and then is all like "how do you feel about that, getting owned by a girl" is annoying. We're here to game, and many guys in games think it's cool when a chick plays a game as well, but we will respect you if you respect us.

I know someone from planetside (o.k, know of) who uses a generic name. I feel sorry for her since voicecomms are a pretty major part of the game and every time she uses them there's a sort of uncomfortable few minutes while everyone tries to figure out whether she's a girl or a high-pitched 11-year-old, and then a torrent of overflowing testosterone when everyone finds out.

    She doesn't use voicecomms anymore.

Yeah, using feminine names gets a lot of people going "ASL" and "OMGOMG PIX". Being harassed is never fun, so avoiding that whenever possible is good. Unfortunately for those who prefer being stealthy, some games pretty much require the use of a microphone, like NS or other team-based games. Eh. For anyone who knows Greek mythology (well, the finer points), Mnemosyne is fairly feminine, and they shouldn't be the idiots who hyperventilate. Doop...

I think I played NS for about a year before I felt comfortable using my mic in a public game. If I ever did on accident – all the freaks would come out and … well it just isn’t fun to play with immature people. I didn’t want people to know I was a girl A) to avoid the weird-o guys out there and B) I was never a great player and didn’t want to have the fact that I was a girl be a strike on my record.

Eventually, I improved my game and came out of the “closet”. And I was one of those girl-types who would occasionally make the “you were owned by a girl”. I would only say stuff to people who accused me of hacking – or would talk trash to me. I don’t believe I ever instigated anything… except for the phase where I had some snide comment in my sig. I realized that doing that was the type of immature behavior that I didn’t like in the first place. And yeah, I’m a bit embarrassed about it now… sorry . The only excuse I can offer is that I was proud of being a decent player despite my “handicap”.

I use a non-gender name…. well I jokingly took on the name Gray Duck and it grew on me. I wouldn’t change it now for anything!
