Why? Because at the time they were the only provider to offer broadband in our area. I fully agree that they suck quite a large amount. Here is why:
Before we got BT broadband, we were with NTL. NTL did not offer us broadband, although they had promised for 2 years that it would be in our area "soon". For some reason I can't quite remember, we had 2 phone lines at that point; one NTL and one BT. For a few months we used the BT line for broadband and the NTL one for phonecalls, but we couldn't just keep on paying for 2 lines, so we decided to have our NTL line cut off, and our phone number on our NTL phone put onto our BT phone.
Simply enough, in theory. But no.
For four months, FOUR MONTHS of constant angry phone calls we had no internet. What had they done? They had cut off our BT line, whilst still charging us for the broadband connection we couldn't use. Fortunately we were able to use our NTL line to make said angry phone calls.
Every time we called customer service we were re-directed to a call centre in India which naturally had no links whatsoever with the actual engineers who botched the job (actually to be fair the engineers did what they were told, they were just told wrong). This resulted in being passed from person to person to person until finally we decided to call OfTell, the company that regulates BT. Once something was finally organised (after threats of legal action I believe) it took them 6 weeks to send an engineer around to actually sort the problem.
But that wasn't the end of the story, oh no. It later turned out (when we had an extra line installed upstairs) that they had forgotten to charge us for the last year of Broadband. We made it quite clear that we did not intend to pay, and that if they had a problem with that we would be quite happy to take it to court.
They did not charge us for the year.
Since the switch has been made to BT-Yahoo prices have dropped to £20 per month for standard 512k broadband, but we were automatically put on the £30 program which comes with email virus scanner, firewall, spam filter (which doesn't work) and other crap I don't use. Unfortunately my mother DOES, but hey, it's not my money.

AOL (These arguments <i>may</i> be outdated, but I doubt it):
1: You can't close the front end without disconnecting. This means it's always there sucking up your resources.
2: You're essentially connected to the AOL network, and THEN the internet, which can get a little confusing I'm sure. What with all this "AOL keyword" sites and internet sites stuff.
3: You're constantly subjected to "Adding new art to AOL."
4: Their commercials are totally misleading and make me want to poke my eyes out with a hot fire sticker. "The problem with broadband connections is that they're, well, open. (house wall falls down) But IF you get AOL for broadband, you don't have to worry!" As if you couldn't get a router or nice software fire wall and be just as safe without the hassle.
5: The official AOL Instant messenger for users is an older version of the software than the one you can get for free (this is based on something a friend told me, so it's not a strong point. It may not even be true.)
6: AOL chats are ten thousand times worse than #naturalselection, and MAN does it get hairy in #ns sometimes <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Since we are giving props to the lovely ISP's we have all had over the years. I would like to approve of the old @Home via excite. They were wonderful.. 6mb download and 256k upload.. they switched to Midconnient recently and are even more stable... sometimes when the cable goes out, the internet doesn't. Not sure how that works.. but I won't complain. I would also like to give a nice shout out to Dakota Net... fastest dedicated frame T1 line available in my area and only for $50/month. Woot! :-)
