My ISP
I just got an e-mail from them today saying that they are bumping all 1MB and 2MB services to 1.5MB and 3MB respectively. This is all for free! I've never heard of any other company doing this.

Blueyonder is probably the best ISP I've been with. Firstly, they've got an invincible FTP server where you can get tons of gaming files (NS included), they are always quick should the service go down. And then this.

They bumped mine from 1.5 to 2.0 too. My dad told me this is because DSL is losing its cost per month and they want to keep customers.

Hey, I love Blueyonder too.

I live over in the US and use their FTP server frequently. Gets me better transfers than Fileplanet usually.

I love AOL. They tell me when someone has logged into my name from any other location, they alert me on spyware/adware on my machine(which is rare, being its not a "Openallthedamnedtime" connection), they give me kickass downloads that no matter how many I have going never slow down my connection...AOL kicks ****.

And if anyone says AOL sucks, give me a single reason why, other than its user base.
• JimmehJimmeh Join Date: 2003-08-24 Member: 20173Members, Constellation
AOL sucks.

I'm on it and other 56kers get about 150-200 pings... i get 200-6k pings. And it constantly disconnects me.

Blueyonder has the best FTP server ever.

Even though i have 8mbit DSL, my ISP sucks because of pings and unstable connections. It's hella fast, but the latency is crap.

This is gonna get lengthy, so gather round to hear ol' Nemmys tales of his very first venture into the Intraweb.

Once upon a time in late 2000, Nemmy had finally managed to get online, not a small feat seeing that he had no job to pay it back then, that his mother knew of his, call it 'obsessive', tendencies, and that there were only dial-up providers in Germany at this point. But, oh, AOL had a great offer: Sign up right now, and you'll be one of the first to get a special deal on our great flatrate once the infrastructure is finished!

So, he did.

At first, everything was nice. It was a great feeling to check websites, to mail friends, and to read news independently from TV restrictions or weekdays. But then, Nemmy decided he wanted to try this cool game 'Counter Strike' out. Y'see, Nemmy had double-line-ISDN, which, while provocing little more than hysteric giggles from most of you, was the fastest thing a German not living in heavily urbanized areas could get at that point. So Nemmy assumed he'd get relatively acceptable pings.
Boy, was he wrong.
Nobody expected two-digit lag. But 500 ms latency to a server five blocks down the road? C'mon, at this rate, it would've made more sense to use morse code.

A little later, AOL decided that it was time to automatically update its software - Nemmys computer disagreed, resulting in the first, but by far not the last AOL inuced Windows-reinstall (Nemmy still suspects that this, admittedly quite amateurish, reinstall was what eventually broke his trusty 5.25"HDD.).

A few format:cs later, Nemmy got mail from AOL. "We're sorry", they said, "but our flatrate plans have to be postponed for the time being. And so that you don't feel the pain of that too much, we're going to kick you in the private parts right now by upping our dial-up prices!" Nemmy wasn't amused. He started searching for a new ISP.

When he had found one, he realized it'd be best to un-install AOLs software. This time, the software disagreed.
Nemmy still doesn't know how they did this, but it took him two complete formats to get rid of the last traces of AOLs oh so user friendly 'integrated' system. At the end of this fatefull night, he vowed never to touch anything related to AOL again. So far, it worked out for him.

I'm not sure. My 1M/bit (now 1.5) costs £35 a month though. I've been with them for over a year so that's why my connection got bumped up. Just do a google search for blueyonder and it's site should come up.

Here are my reasons for liking them:

Their browsing software is by far the fastest I've experienced yet, as well as most streamlined.

The speed of Dialup loading up a page is still damned fast.

The connection is quite consistent, almost never flucuating(other than the rare down time for maintenance).

The multitude of extras in the areas of movies, music, and subscriptions to the online portions of many movies.

I myself have never had a problem installing/uninstalling AOL, but I've only been around since 4.0(i.e., 5-6 years). Their rates have never once increased on me. They continually give us a damned good deal($20 a month for DSL 256kup/down, for a year is my current deal, and because I gotta pay the local **** $30 bucks[which is NOT aol, its pacbell], it comes out to $50).

Really, the only thing I've ever not liked about them is that I don't have the option to be a "always on" internet thingy.

At the moment I have 98 AOL free-trial cds. Not sure what to do with them though, any suggestions?
