Actually that decapitation(?) of the zombie in the traptown video was a preset thing, not dynamic - if the spinning fan of death had been higher up the zombie would still get clipped at the same spot, unless they made another preset for being clipped at that point of your body.
And DOOMeh, the lighting is fine, see the source engine showoff movie and you'll notice the lighting is dynamic and shizzle like doom3 or whatever.

I thought Splinter Cell: Pandora tomorrow had a great engine, but the shading SUCKS!
If you walk in front of a light, you look all pixelated in your shadow. I mean this game pivots on lighting, so I don't think they should have gone soft with that.
And Doom, I'm sure they will put advanced lighting features for those that can handle them. I don't think it's the whole "shade the whole model" thing unless you choose that.
Pixel-shader: A tiny little program that runs for each pixel in the graphics card. They can do lots of cool looking stuff including things like gaussian blur and refraction(lenses, water, hot air rising from a vent).
Vertex-shader: These operate on vertices("corners" of polygons and associated values like lighting intensity) they are typically used to deform things, create realistic looking ripples in water and for facial animations.

To be honest, I'm with doom... they should just throw the downscaling out the window and focus on making the best possible engine. That's always been something that bugged me about PC games... if you throw a smoke grenade or whatever in a console MP you know everyone sees the same or doesn't as the case may be, while in something like CS half your team gets lagged out by it, others can see perfectly past it because it's just big bad sprites and others end up lost in a rather cool and almost realistic smoke effect while they get shot by the people in software mode ^^;

Look Doom, see <a href='http://www.valvesoftware.com/sourcelicense/enginefeatures.htm' target='_blank'>here</a>
While not featuring per-pixel lighting, it does have smooth vertex lighting which is on-par with UT2k3 and Unreal 2. This would allow models to have a huge variety of shades as they pass through lit areas, which suggests to me that it hadn't been implemented properly at the time of last year's E3.
Also, from what I've seen, the light maps which are rather blocky in HL (just look at light_spots in most NS maps) are crisp and smooth in HL2, removing the 'ugly' factor.
UT2k3/4 is no worse off for not having per-pixel lighting, and frankly I get sick of seeing unrealistic pure black shadows in Doom 3, Far Cry and Deus Ex 2. We'll have to wait for Unreal 3 and the like befire we see proper soft realistic shadows.
Then again, to hell with the lighting. HL2 offers so much more, that I couldn't care less if a tram isn't shaded properly for a split-second <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

True. See, they really are for 2 kinds of people(which I am thankful for):
Halo 2 is PURELY a action game, and its got a damned good story too(even if its only half as good as the books- they kick ****, go pick 'em up), but not much variety for different things other than driving, and shooting.
Half-Life 2 is for the thinking man, AND the shooting man. Sure, you can go through the whole game just shooting, but its better, AND SMARTER, to go through it looking for ways to trap or use traps to get your enemies. Just the fact that if you act like you would in real life you'll probably live is one of the coolest things to me.
HL2 will be so much more than Halo 2 for me, but thats just because I am a thinking man. But Halo 2 will STILL kick ****, regardless.

Even if they included optional dynamic lighting you couldn't use it in multiplayer because people on older systems would have an advantage over people with newer systems, and you'd have people with newer systems making a "cheat" to make HL2 think their system is older and can't handle the lighting, thus downscaling their graphics to give them an advantage...
And trev, 1.2ghz is old. In fact, its nearly ancient. Just accept it. :P

Just because you're on a 386 doesn't mean 486 isn't old. :P
A little consistancey would really help MP gaming =P

another problem being custom models.
how do i know that ubar1337x0r isn't repeatedly killing me because i look like a fifty foot mammoth skulk with arrows pointing at me from every concieveable direction?
(customs should be given to the developer so they can be hard-coded into the game)
Then again, to hell with the lighting. HL2 offers so much more, that I couldn't care less if a tram isn't shaded properly for a split-second <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
It is a little tiring always playing the game of catchup, wouldn't you say?
Keep in mind that the mid-low end computer with a green circle sticker slapped on it has almost NOTHING going on in the background, letting almost every single ounce of power 735 mhz has to offer come into play (though it really isn't that much compared to 2.8 Ghz). I've seen the in-game video of Halo 2, and it looks sexy. It's built off of Halo, so I already like it, and since it's on a console, you're not going to have compatability issues or driver updates or slowdown because your computer's too slow or none o' that jazz.
EDIT: Oh, and it's only $150 vs $2,000
Personally, I'm more looking forward to HL2. Sure, DooM 3 will be pretty as all get-out. But I doubt it'll deliver more than a very pretty place to shoot stuff up.
Half-Life 2 will present a whole storyline... a world to immerse yourself in and follow. Not to mention the difference between the mod support between the two.. personally, I'd back Valve just for that aspect of it. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Doom 3 is competitive, but HALO 2 doesn't even factor in?
I hope I never get sucked into the alternate dimension you're posting from.
But Halo 2 will STILL kick ****, regardless.
as for customizing.. if you really want to play against other people with file consistency, setting consistency.. play on Cal, or at a lan.
Oh please. Gordon Freeman is the ultimate hero, Master Chief can't hold a torch to his name.

Read the books, and you'll understand: Yes, he can. Just from what he did on Reach...what he did during training....he was a hero. Though he has failed many times(Halo in fact was a failure. You made it off the planet....but no one else did. BUT it turns out a few others DID in fact make it. Just read the books).
And btw- looks like in Halo 2 there will be more than one person with the MJOLNIR armor. And ONE OF THEM(aka, more than just another person, were talking 2-3 more people, depending) may be a...love interest. Though the book gives nothing to support this theory, it definately could happen.
What happened to the idea where you'd play a game for "fun"?
Or has all sense of fun been knocked out of you people for graphics?
Because frankly thats whats wrong with PC's TBH. At the current moment I'd much rather stay in with my "Black box with a Green Sticker".
Why? The PC market sucks at this moment in time. Period.

Half-life doesn't require you to go out and grab 20 books for an actual story line. It has the smarts to build the damned thing into the game itself.
I don't know about you, but I much prefer games with storylines over games with storylines in a bunch of seperate books that don't come with the game, and the game itself lacks anything that could possibly be called a storyline.
Actually, its probably "Linda", though I wouldn't be surprised if they did have something about Linda there.
And for everyone that insults "Master Chief", you CAN find out his name, serial number, everything. Lets see if I remember:
Real Name: John(last name not given, being he was taken from his parents at age 5 for the program). Only one person calls him John- the Dr. that is practically a mother to him(and once in a while, Mendez, who was his military trainer. The Dr. was the original version of Cortana- thats why Cortana takes such a liking to MC)
The reason he was called Master Chief was because he was the leader of the MJOLNIR group(ironic, being they barely got their armor before the whole 'Reach' problem began).
If I remember correctly, his # was 107. It may have been something else, but I think that was it.
Oh, and btw, if Halo is for kiddies, why is it that its rated Mature, has a story that is built off of everything were going through RIGHT NOW(yeah, the whole "Religion that wants to kill us" thing that the extremist Muslim groups have. Muslims=good. Extremist Anythings=bad. The whole story is built off of that. It says IN THE ALIEN'S RELIGION that the ones they encounter that year(aka, the humans), need to be killed off. Much like what were getting now).
Don't talk before you don't know.

Sorry for DBL post if I do one:
It had a perfectly viable storyline in the game, its just that it gets even deeper than it already was(it was pretty deep in the game. Its just most people that played didn't have the patience). REALLY deep.
I really, REALLY hope not. A love story just wouldn't fit in with Halo.
Unless, as DOOMeh said, it's Tex <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Well, I doubt it will, but I love romance stories(yes, I am MALE), and this would be a nice one.
If you guys would like to know: Linda is a sniper. Pro.

Better graphics enhances gameplay and immersion. If it didn't, don't you think we out to just go back to the wolf3D engine?
Just because you're excited about a game's graphics doesn't mean you're an idiot who can't appreciate anything else. The graphics complement the package as a whole.
And saying the PC industry is in a rut is nothing new. People have been saying that for ten years now, probably longer. People will be saying it 10 years from now. Personally I think now is one of the best times in recent years to be involved w/ gaming, what with all the great games that came out last year and are due out this year and the next year...
