once again I blatantly abuse polls.
I have a GeForce2. Have been very happy with it for the 2+ years I've owned it. As of 2004's beginning, it's no longer good enough for today's games. I wanted to buy an ATI card of some model for winter break to play KOTOR, Deus Ex 2, and upcoming games. When I saw HL2 was pushed back more and DX2 wasn't rated as well as DX1, I decided to hold back. Even as of today, I have never been able to try these games, as well as Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, and Far Cry.
Spring break starts as of a little less than 24 hours from now for me. I'm probably going to get some test grades back tomorrow, and if they're good enough I'll walk into a local computer store on my way back home.
It is time.
Shall I:
Give in: Slap down $200 in cash saved over the past 2 years to pick up an ATI 9800 Pro. Maybe even pick up a copy of one of the amazing games I've been lacking while I'm at it. Between grades and waiting, I've earned it.
Hold back: delay the vid card purchase and finish what I started: Planescape: Torment. If it doesn't pass spring break, cramming for exams will kill the rest of the time just fine. Later, when summer starts, I can treat myself (with lower prices to boot) and with the better grades from not gaming as much with a new video card, I will have really earned an upgrade.

At my local Best Buy, ATI 9800s are $400 - $500.

the 400 dollar ati 9800's are the xts. Hes thinking of buying a 128mgb.
The next generation video cards (as noted in a prior post) will be PCI Express, not AGP. You'll be laying down for a new motherboard as well as a new graphics card at that upgrade-point, at which time you'll probably want to just spring for a new CPU and memory as well, while you're at it.. bring up the whole system's performance level.
And if you can score a R9800 Pro (built by ATI.. I don't trust third-party manufacturers) for $200, more power to you. Hell, I'd look at picking one up for THAT price, and I have an R9500 Pro right now.
And with that new card, you wont be able to resist.
marik..... yooooou waaaaant tooooooo waaaaaaait.....
FIgure that out and you get a gold star.

Check this place out, make sure your local computer store gives you the same prices. Remember that some of these maybe require you to pay for the shipping.
I agree....I semi-recently got a new card and I'm currently playing Baldur's gate II (Just finished 1), Planescape: Torment (Only a few hours in, but loving it) and Fallout II.
The only games that have needed it are PoP:SoT (Love that game so much) and the Far Cry MP Beta, (really put me off the game....otherwise I would have bought it straight away.)
Your best off waiting. When the exams are over with that $200 you could probably pick up PoP, Far Cry and Painkiller as well as a 9800pro with money to spare.
Plus you'll probably end up with better grades, I probably would have done.
So this way it's a win-win situation.
GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGO!!!!!!!!
GOGOGOGOGOGOG!!!!!!ONEONEone!!!
(In other words, go buy one and pick one up for me too!)
I never finished the game because I got myself a GeForce 2 and Deus Ex back in the days, and while I won't let anything bad come to DX, I still regret having completely purged my Planescape install to make room for it. Since then, I never got as far as Ravels maze again.
Do yourself a favor and take your time, not so much because of the grades; I'm absolutely definite you'll be able to set your priorities straight if necessary, but simply because you couldn't stand the temptation of the new products once you got yourself the new card. Get done with P:T, then reconsider.
I got screwed on my 9700 pro
