Eh, don't be afraid to try it out, it's rather slow paced to begin with so you can easily pick up on things before you mess up too badly.
From what I've experienced, theres 3 things that are vital to winning(or at least doing well). In order of importance...
1. Having lots of strong, nearby friends(good diplomacy skills) <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo--> 2. Being able to log often, as you want to check up on your "empire" every few hours or so during the later stages of the game, as people get fast ships(high level energy) that can hit you within a few hours. 3. Of course, tactical ability is important, as with all strategy games. Turtling up isn't a good idea, expansion is key, and knowing how to maximize your resources is important, as in dont spend 800 pps on an upgrade when you can use a supply unit(gives 1 upgrade each) that you could buy with 500pps worth of money

But it did get me in a top ten player level rank for awhile. My system this round is Sadalsud, heh. I decided to go for a 42% attack bonus as well as 16% bonuses to culture and production. I took 30% hits to growth and speed, 13% to defense and 24% to science. Also, I agree about the new potential for specialization within alliances.
