<div class="IPBDescription">Help me</div> You know, over at my school there are quite some alternative peeps (you knows, wide pants, chains etc)

I was thinking, I feel different than other kids, I like different things, and I mean DIFFERENT. While my classmates still listen to their fake P. Diddy (whatshisname) or 50 cent (<- FU), I listen to Slipknot, Linkin Park, Disturbed, System of a Down and other stuff like that.
I also have other meanings, while most kids in my class "follow their leader", I have my own meaning. Somehow I feel attracted to alternative girls and such (my girlfriend is kinda alternative <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->). I'm just different. I'm thinking about being alternative too, my what will others think, will I lose some friends?
Right now I'm kinda like, normal/big wide pants style (no comment <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif'><!--endemo-->).

Hmm, you say you're thinking of being alternative. It's not a choice dude, you either are or are not. Just go with whatever you're happy with, don't go out of your way to change yourself to either fit in or to rebel. Stay true to how you want to dress or act. If you lose any friends over being yourself, they're jerks, who cares. Real friends will respect you and like you for who you are, not how you dress.

On the other hand, you're only young, your friends and social circles will change, who knows what the future holds. Just keep doing what you want.

Does it matter? If listening to different music is your idea of 'rebellion' then go for it. Whoever said you had to dress up to be different? Isn't that sorta missing the point?

I'm a different kind of person too, I live in Eastern Pennsylvania. Thats the main problem, because everybody that moves from NYC moves here and then it seems everyone likes fiddy cent and ****. Almost nobody in my school is like me, where they dont like rap and like video games and rock and stuff, not going out and doing drugs while listening to gangster rap.

Its good to know there are others out there who enjoy good music. I'm surrounded by a bunch of emo/rap/hip-hop obsessed people, If I even think of bringing up anyone like Godsmack or Manson, they'd have my head.

But, as the others have said, be who you are. I gave up on trying to find a place to fit in and decided that if people don't want to deal with me, they can go somewhere else. I am who I am, its as simple as that.

Just be who you are, don't live like others would want you to be.
Don't "act as a rebel" just do what you want to do. Of course, if that involves murders and car burning, don't do what you want to do.
Remember, others are OTHERS. No need to feel uncomfortable for the sole reason you want them to be comfortable.
Following a leader is for people who have low self-esteem and need morale boosting.

Note that I am not saying "don't make friends", but if everyone is different from you, that'll be the way to go. If you "lose friends" because you decide to follow a certain idea, then these people don't deserve to be your friends because they don't understand the way you think.

Eh. When will kids learn that the term girlfriend or boyfriend is a LOT more serious than they think... or maybe I'm just an old fogey.. thats 18... er.. yea.. IMO the term boyfriend and girlfriend should be reserved for two VERY exclusive people. Nowadays it seems like people are "going out" with 20 people at a time the way they use it.

I was at a Good Charlotte concert recently. I'm 23. I'd say the median age at that concert was 14 and female. Boy did I feel out of place... got me thinking about music and culture though... a stadium full of 14 year old girls wearing fishnets with dyed hair etc... it's ironic how there's a such thing as a 'mainstream counterculture' these days... I guess that's always how social movements work though. Everyone rebels against the norm, then the rebellion becomes the norm, and the cycle repeats...

hm. I'll cut my stream of consciousness off right here. :>

i listen to rap, rock, death metal, pop, and techno, and nobody's gunna be able to tell me that i'm "fake" just becasue of the music i listen to..... music isn't everything, aditude is.

Don't worry about what other people say/think/do.

I have a saying that puts my feelings about other people (those who don't belong to my "group")

    "People are stupid."

Plain and simple. If you wanna listen to Linkin Park and Godsmack and SlipKnot, go right effin ahead. If they look at you weird, simply just start saying "<span style='font-size:8pt;line-height:100%'>badger badger badger </span> badger badger badger <span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>badger badger badger</span> <span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'>badger badger </span><span style='color:gray'><span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'>MUSHROOM MUSHROOM</span></span>. They'll think your insane and stop bugging you. Or you'll find out which of them is a "netgeek" and actually knows what your referring to.

    Isn't Slipknot Emo anyway?

    Just angry?

Sorry I like music that isn't about the artist whining about stuff, or screaming about stuff (with the exception of Rage).

That being said if you think listening to Slipknot makes you different try being one of the only kids in all 6 of your classes to even know what Hard Trance is. Well im out of highschool now and surrond myself with people who like what I like, its actually quite comforting.

if people cant accept you for who you are, then stuff em.

dont be worried about what others might think, if you lose a "friend" just cause you listen to different music then is he/she really worth bein friends with?

also bein different isnt bad. yesterday a girl from work just walked upto me and said "your a freak you know?" 'yeh, i know'. ^_^ i like bein me, cause im not normal, which is goood <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

i really hate most of the new music, but thats just me. i like bass, techno, classical, remixes, trance. so yea ^_^ but, dont change you to suit other people.

I kinda stand out from my school too. Everyone here seems obsessed with lookin' good and not fancying the wrong person and such. I really couldn't give a rats ****. I've proposed to teachers, i act quite incredibly **** with some of my friends, i flash my incredably large stomach at girls who call me fat, then make kissy faces, and i call everyone nublets or n00bs. "Be yourself" ir probably the most over-used statement out there, but it's true. "Be yourself", don't "Be different", because when you're being "different" you're doing the same as aproximatly 1 million other people are doing at the same time, I.E, you're not different. Just be yourself.

I wear black, i'm not a goth. I sometimes have my hair bright blue or green, i'm not a raver. I like linkin park, green day, muse etc, i'm not a "greebo" as they're called around here....

anyway, being yourself > trying to fit in. and real friends are people who like you and not your clothes/music taste.

I agree -- especially about the screaming part... it's sooo hard to find an actually talented male vocalist these days. Talented guitar work can be rare too...

    On a serious note:

Just dress the way you like, dont think about what everyone else looks like. If you like punk, metal music for example, that doesnt mean u have to dress like all the other punk, metal people. Just find what you like and use that.

    On a non serious note

If you really want to be different and unique...
Make yourself a Gorgey costume and run around silly string webbing all those people who make fun of you. Then when they try to take the silly string off spit green jello on them and chuckle. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

if you have trouble thinking you're out of place... consider this.

linkin park? slipknot? those <i>really</i> are bigger bands..

just do whatever the f*** you want... don't let the social scene change you.

find your groove, and you can get along and still listen to what you want, dress how you like, etc. like esuna said.

just find your groove.. it's frequently going to be a contradiction. <b>edit</b>: just like cpl. davis said!

i'm comfortable/preppy dressed, but i listen to electronica/classix/old school rap instead of coldplay and stuff (or <i>whatever</i> the f*** conformist preppies listen to).

whatever you feel comfortable (and enjoy yourself) doing.. <i>that</i> is the ideal.

well... it's been said a million times in the thread already but as long as what you enjoy doesn't hurt anyone (like murder, chasing people with chainsaws, etc) then just do it and to heck with what anyone else thinks <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I get some flak for just being who I am sometimes but it's easy to ignore. I was sitting playing some CS back in the days I played it on the LAN when one of my flatmate's girlfriend walks in. Normally my room is open to anyone and I love having people in it whether I'm there or not... but in her case I was always willing to make an exception ><
She just sat and whined going 'why do you play games?' making me miss a shot and take a few bullets in the process. I just ranted something out about 'WHY DO YOU BREATHE???' and she left me alone. She was probably just miffed I can play games and talk easily with the guys in my flat while most of them hated her (she was a complete b*tch with a superiority/popularity complex) and even her BF didn't talk to her as he did to us. Unlike her I didn't run about squealing and being false so she could never understand why I got on with so many people so easily and I think it bugged her <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

um... leading off the point a bit but just do what you want to do, say what you mean and wear what you want to wear and if anyone's silly enough to try and get on your case for not doing the 'in' thing just send them packing =3

A good way to get along with many different people is to be open-minded and accepting of different styles.

For example, I listen to a large large variety of music, from regular stuff like Linkin Park and System of a Down, to rather obscure stuff, like The Changelings and Bella Morte. The only reason I don't like much emo, rap, or hip-hop is because I am surrounded by it 24/7 (my sister is a major emo freak).

Jez, you rock, hope you realize that. I personally hate slipknot, but whatever. Realize, were cool.

But what my problem is, is that there are TOO MANY LIKE YOU. My whole school is made up of either hip-hop lovers, or dark rock lovers. NIETHER OF WHICH know the first reason of to do it(most of them- they don't understand music, let alone why 'we'[I write music too] vent using our music. They just listen to it, which is fine, but they think that their different, because they like something their parents don't. It makes me quite rather mad.

    Love ya, Jez.

so.. umm.. you say p-diddy and 50 cent are fake (I'm not defending them by any means) and then you go and site groups like Linkn Park and Slipknot... umm.. same thing... lyrics about crap, the only difference is instrument choice. ( ie synthesizer vs guitar) both the first and the second are in heavy rotation on radio stations that have the most market share. You don’t always have to be negative toward someone when describing the things you like.

    Normal is Boring

Thats how I feel. I am not normal, and I don't care. Read my sig, it explains alot.

I dress how I feel, I say what I wan't to, and (to an extent of the law) I do what I want to. Everyday I try to add a little bit of chaos to peoples orderly lives. It could be anything from screaming at the top of my lungs for no reason to drawing a little face on my hand and talking to it when I have had too much to drink (she shouldn't have left that sharpie there, but at least I had someone intellegent to talk to)

I tire of people who follow the masses. Im tired of those who can't think for themselves, who have to be told by somebody what to wear or what is normal to think. I, personally, blame religion for the major of conformity. For centuries people have been told what to believe, and never questioned it. Those who did got persecuted, killed (salem witch trials anyone), or shunned. It makes me sick to see people get persecuted for thinking independently, whether it be on a grand scale or getting picked on in high school.

Bah, this topic really makes me rant. I am all for free thought, free expression, free choice. You are the master of your own destiny. I never had a "group" in high school, I wasn't popular, but wasn't unpopular either, I was just there. I had friends, but I never changed myself to get those friends, they were my friends becuase of who I was, not of who I wasn't. (to be honest, most of my friends would be considered the "hick" crowd, but if you call me one too, I would set you straight <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo--> )

    /rant

I don't try to stand out, at least by clothing. Really, I don't care about clothes as long as it doesn't have a logo on it. Wearing abrecrombie and finch doesnt make you any more cool, but not wearing doesn't make you any more extreme and punk either.

I hate it that your paying 10% for the fabric/labor, and 90% for the damn logo. Its like your paying people to be their walking billboard, doesn't advertisement work the other way, shouldn't companys pay YOU to advertise their product? I personally like the shirts that say cool things like the "I PLAY VERY VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES" shirt. I guess most people would do anything to be accetped, even sell their soul (or part of it at least).
