    Ok, i can't get to sleep due to this damned heat so i thought i'd spend some time polishing a corridor i was working on earlier, what do you think?

    Its too.... bland. The architecture looks awesome, gotta hand you that. But the lighting lacks, try adding some more colour. I think that if you put some steam coming from the pipes (i think they're pipes) in the ceiling it would also add to it. Other than that, keep it up.

    I am still pretty clueless as to how to use the particle system. For my map that im making "ns_papillon" I just copied and pasted the particle systems from the sample maps <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> . Shhhhhhh its our little sekrat <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The blue really makes it look a lot better. Try adding some dripping water, I figured out how to make that myself with the particle system (pretty much the only thing I can make with it).

    I think its done a good job of simplifying it, but parts of it are still mumbo jumbo to me still.

    Ok, for everyone's information ns_deus is now officially <b>on hold</b>.

    This is by no means the end of it, i have every intention of continuing it, but not for two weeks. As it stands i work full time in London, so not only does that mean working a whole day, that means irritating commuting as well, this does nothing but makes me tired, ontop of that i've been working on my map pretty much every night until 2-3am, dispite having to get up for work the next day.

    Due to my devotion to the map i've also been letting my social life slide, i've not been clubbing in at least a month, i only see my girlfriend once a week and basically i find myself just stuck in this room getting bogged down.

    In short, i'm burned out.

    In two weeks i leave my job (starting my degree in a month or two's time) so i will have an abundance of free time, so that means all the time in the world to knuckle down and get this map progressing.

    I'm sorry that i'm doing this, for those who want to see this map out soon, and also many apologies to enf0rcer, since he's been catching me in my grouchy moods as of late. As time goes on, i'm getting more and more tired, i get grouchy and unproductive, sorry if you've caught me like this, but that's what i'm like, sorry. Anyway...

    <span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'><b>This is in no way the end, this map WILL be worked on, just not now, i need to relax and get my life back together a bit more before i go burning the candle at both ends again.</b></span>

    Ok, i've kinda gone back on my word, i've done a <i>little</i> bit of work on deus, but as tomorrow is my last day of work (and symbolises the first day working on deus again) i treated myself to making a little prefab walkway.

    I tweaked the gamma in photoshop since the only lights are the texture lights, but what do you think? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Well, i took that prefab walkway and decided to actually put it to use, this room is in the maintenance district since i've recently had more inspiration with the dirty look rather than the clean one. The r_speeds are a little excessive at present, i'm gonna work on that next, but as for aesthetics.... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Hmm. In a word: atrocious. A much better prefab for this area would be the HL vending machine stretched to carry the player over the tarnished water.

    Sarcasm aside, it looks great. Good job <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Well, as a little update, that room is now running with acceptable r_speeds, so rar.

    And cheers for the compliment. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    esuna, I know a great technique to lower r_speeds by around 100, if you want in on my sekrat (even though its not a sekrat cuz ive said it on the forums before) pm me.

    lol, make sure there is a ladder. stupid marines like me like to jump into HL puddles of water and play around in em.
  • EriasErias Join Date: 2003-08-17 Member: 19878Members
    Some tall guy, are you referring to the "technique" where you texture every brush as NULL and then only texture the inside of your map? Because although the NULL texture is useful, that method is primarily a misconception. The compiler removes MOST the map's outside and unseen faces automatically. There are ways to reduce r_speeds using NULL, but the method I've been hearing about isn't correct, although it may reduce r_speeds by "fluke."

    I've found two ways to use NULLs to significantly decrease wpolys and r_speeds. One is on the backside of brushes that are in the map but you never see that side or can't get behind the brush (say, on the back of a round pipe placed a few units away from a wall.) This will only be effective if there is a spot where VIS thinks it can see this side (say, around a corner or bend.) NULL can also be placed on very small or barely visible faces that are present on detailed brushes.

    The other way to use NULL is on solid brush entities, on the sides that are flush with or inside the walls (these sides are still visible a lot of the time, because brush entities don't integrate into the level geometry or get culled.) This can really help if you use a lot of func_walls or somesuch to prevent funny shapes from breaking up your faces too much.

    Hopefully this will dispel any rumours.

    PS. This is the third time I've posted this NULL texture thing. I wonder if I'm getting though to anyone?

    Erias, I've tested my technique several times and its lowered r_speeds drastically each time, and yes I know about the other uses of the null texture, so its getting through to some people <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->.

    My knowledge of the HL map compiler is confirmed by people who actually code for the darn thing (XP-Cagey says basically the same thing about the NULL texture in another thread.) That said, I never asserted your technique wouldn't lower r_speeds, just that you might have the wrong idea about <i>how</i> it works. And really, knowing how the compiler and HL engine work is essential to good mapping.
  • Some_tall_guy1Some_tall_guy1 Join Date: 2003-05-22 Member: 16601Members
    To tell you the truth, I really have no clue as to why it does lower r_speeds, i just know it does <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I really love the way the map is proceeding. It looks visually amazing and it contains some superb ideas.

    The burnt-out res node at the marine start got me thinking. A weldable to make it function again might be a nice treat. Of course, if it was there in the marine spawn it would be a bit unbalanced. Now you mentioned a maintenance district correct? How about placing the weldable in that district, so that when triggered it repaired the node at marine start. Place a couple of red lights around the busted node that change to green when the weldable is triggered. That way coms will know what that weldable has done. Just a suggestion <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    This font is the most simple font I have ever seen. And it looks perfect in this place!
