<div class="IPBDescription">Anyone interested?</div> Just though I'd throw this out to see if anyone would want to use it. Just some basic Cel shading to the original models.

LOL.. that would be funny to have a cel shaded pack that makes everything cel shaded, even buildings.. but it would probably be laggy, due to the polys.
  • Visual_MirageVisual_Mirage Join Date: 2003-05-01 Member: 15973Members
Dude! A whole cel-shaded pack would own SO hard!

And i don't think it'd raise poly count? It's only the skin that should change i think? well...i dunno what he's done, heh

nope, its not only the skin..in fact the skin isnt changed <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> the model itself gets a second "hull" that is slightly bigger than the original model.. that doubles the polycount.

Doubles the poly's. What you do is copy all of the faces, make them slightly bigger, and invert them. Then give those faces totally black mesh.

Er, wouldn't true cel-shaded graphics require the rendering engine to be rewritten?
  • JaegerJaeger Join Date: 2002-11-28 Member: 10202Members
No, because it isn't true cell-shading, you're just adding an inverted hull to the model, scaling it up, and meshing it black for a similar effect.
  • JamilJamil Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4829Members
Oh stop splitting hairs, Jaeger. Different means to an end are cool with me. I'm not going to knock the innovation of the half-life modelling community to bring new and exciting things to the engine. I think it looks great, but might need a flatter re-skin job to acheive that cartoony effect.

i would love these if we could get them working <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

It takes about 2 minutes to do these with the system Im doing now. Im thinking of trying out some different ways of getting a cartoony skin which might take a bit more work. I'll post a new shot of the skin later and let you decide wheter its worth doing on all the skins. I'm going to do a test to see wheter its worth it. Here's a skulk using my current system.

I really hope you release these. If they can be done as quick as you say, i REALLY want to see a model pack of these.

    That would so so rule.

    Still too much gradation maybe.

Look at the Zelda shot someone posted. There are only like 2 colours to a body segment. Highlight and shadow. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'm no cell shading buff. So I could just be talking out my posterior.

    Edit:

Actually, their shadows could be done by the engine itself. So it's really hard to say how you could get that desired effect. In any case, your second picture there looks pretty rad.

I dont really care about the cel-shaded original models but I sure want all of the upcomming chibby models in cel-shaded versions cuz that would be so sweet.

-EDIT- The more I look at skulk #2 the more I like it.... want all original models in that style now <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> -EDIT-

EDIT: O btw, what is your "System" that you are using? is it simple or complacated, cos i could give the skining a go! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

if you want it to look cel-shaded like cartoons then you have to make it look much crappier than that. you have to use no shades of color but have just a few colors that clash very strongly and have black lines between all of the different colors except the different colors used to indicate lighting which means only 2 shades (light and dark) for every color on the subject, so the gouraud shading has to be disabled and replaced by something else coz that causes lots of shades of color except there is nothing to replace it with so just leave it out.

    YOu crazy ? ( no offence <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> )

ofcourse you can have shaded colors along with cel-shading. black lines and shaded colors goes hand in hand. never seen XIII or McFarlane productions?

I like the second and third skins shown on this page
