Great stuff guys. Both the stories gave me a real idea about commanding and stuff. I love the way you dropped a welders tool humbaba. Monse, do you have to concentrate fire? I know its quicker to kill something but the fact that you need to learn to concentrate suggests that they are being attacked by more than one alien... I dont know how to word it but youve given me some interesting insights.

hmm lots of PR next week? does that mean something?

u gotta concentrate the fire on the big aliens and split fire on small ones..... so u can kill em all quickly..... but... the truth is that u gotta kill every alien that gets close to u and ur mates

To answer your question CM, when the marines go on a mission away from their bases and no longer have turrets and mines supporting them, they usually do much better if they stay in a compact group and focus their weapons on targets. Until the aliens get xenocide and bilebomb, of course. Then you want your troops more spread out to minimize these high-powered splash damage attacks.

Thanks monse, this mod is sounding better and better. I mean, the tactics themselves make sense but in most games there is no significant improvement if you employ them. Thats why I stopped playing alot of RTS's, all the tactics that should work dont whereas a tank rush almost always does.

Im glad that tactics like that have evolved over such a relatively small space of time. It suggests one of two things, either this game is really deep and even more will be discovered all the time OR the tactics are so obvious its all been discovered and there is nothing new now. Ive got a feeling that NS is behind door number 1 though.

Yessir, I discover new tactics every day. And every map is so different. Some maps call for shottys (NS_Nothing is the haven of Shotguns, with its tight turnign corridors and dark places) and some call for HMGs (Hera, with many of its wide open spaces and peoples penchant for going flyer there . ..) Some call for aggresive expansion, and some require more care. The depth really seems infinite. I am sure that I have just scratched the surface of the many tactics available to a commander. And how can you not love a mod with a shotty like NS's. ah . . .I am swooning right now.

I can't wait to bust out that shotgun. Splatter some alien blood on the wall. Yum.

Oh yeah, since I'm stupid, a little question. What color is the alien blood? It's most likely green.

If it is green, I think it should be changed. Green alien blood is cliche. I'm talking purple blood here. Purple? Yep, purple. Or maybe blue. I'd even settle for yellow. Yellow is close to green. But yeah.... have a nice day. Long live purple alien blood!

We were having late night (or early morning) game on NS_Nothing of about 10 people. I was on the alien team and we quickly rushed to the marine base, to try to bring a quick end to the match. We ripped apart a few marines before we were all torn to shreds. After we all slowly respawned, 2 of my teamates wandered off to make the other 2 hives while I went and pestered the marines.

Soon the marines started to attack the cargo bay, where one of our hives was building. They had a mini base setup outside and in my past experieces, once the marines took that area, it was hard for aliens to get it back with so few players. I voice my concerns (re. defeat) over voicecomm, but one of my teamates laughs, says no problem and rushes off to handle it. Well, I thought he was a dead man, and wandered off to help anyways. As usual, I was quickly killed, but my teamate continued hitting thier mini-base. Somehow, he whipped it out before they killed the hive that was growing. I give out a little cheer, but things look bad as the marines were pressing into the cargo bay again...

All of a suddne, both of the new hives pop online. Damn, I was RELIEVED I quickly switch to my favorite level 5 and go on a base romp, taking out everything in their base, much to their suprise as 2 minutes ago we were pestering them with fliers and level 1's. We quickly conered those poor ######## and finished them off!

Hello all, I just wanted to add my 2 cents in. Great stories all around! I just spent the last 2 hours sitting in front of my screen reading the stories and replaying what I thought they would look like in my mind. Good stuff NS staff. Thanks again for this post, and keep the (digital) ink flowing!

Two quick tactical stories involving a level3 (or two)...

Story 1: I was a builder, and followed a pair of fliers (Fam and Rhoads) on their way to attack turrets in a hive room. This particular hive room has a pool of water in it, which is connected by a short submerged tunnel to a vent system. So I ran behind the two of them and waited at the other end of the tunnel. Every time a level3 surfaced, I used my Healing Spray to patch him up, and he dove back in to continue the assault. I'd wager we ###### off a LOT of marines with that combination. (:

Story 2: Fam and I found a lovely strategy in some of the high-ceilinged rooms of NS_Hera. Simple, really... I, a level1, had evolved Silence. He would flap around the ceiling as a level3, dropping spore clouds and tossing spikes at the poor little marines. And as soon as the marine lifted his rifle skyward, I jumped in and cut him off at the ankles... he never heard me coming. We probably got 5 or 6 kills, together.

So remember kids, even though aliens are designed for DM it doesn't hurt to stick with a buddy.

the ugly wallclimbing alien says, "Remember hive mates, always infest human stuff with a friend."

Heres my idea for alien artilery, a level1 with xenocide stands within line of sight of a marine base on a incline then a level5 stands behind him and charges right into the level1 thus catapulting him at the marine base, they level1 is then allowed to xenocide at whichever point in flight he chooses, I know its impossible with the engine, but it sounds damn cool. Now THAT is alien teamwork other possibilities are level5's actings as APC's for level1's who run under them or level1's riding on the backs of level3's acting as paratroopers. If only it were possible

well there is the level 1 leap...
• LongtoothLongtooth Join Date: 2002-07-02 Member: 863Members
How far does the level1 leap get the level1? Can he leap say for the floor to an average hieght roof?
• humbabahumbaba That Exciting Tales From the Frontline Guy Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 86Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Longtooth, to answer your question, yes. Probobly. There are some pretty tall rooms in some maps where this wouldnt be true. But they can leap pretty far or high.
I have an old story, and I feel obligated to keep this thread rolling. I was playing alien on NS_Bast, and it was about a 6 on 6 game, I think. As a team, we had been struggling to survive, and I had been builder for most of it, plopping down structures and hiding Defensive chambers and Movement chambers in key areas and under water, to keep em alive. We were barely hanging on as the marine continually blasted us out of rooms, setting up turrets. They knocked us out of the engine room early and filled it with turrets. Than they moved on to the Water hive and blasted it with grenades. Moving on quickly, they dispatched the refinery. Well, We were out of hives. I had spent my time in the water hive Building turrets as the enemy killed the refinery. My teammates had managed to parasite one or two marines before dying, and I saw them coming back to the water hive. I was the last alien alive and had 2 options. A: Run and die, ending the game and starting a new one. B: Hold on till I had the rps and build a hive, then defend it till it grew.
I chose B. I crawled up onto a pipe and hid, waiting for the marines, who had been told to "Hunt down Humb" to filter in one by one. I would teach them. I heard the distinctive clinking of ammo and footsteps of a marine, and selected the only weapon I had available, bite. The marine came under fire from the two turrets I had finished, and he strafed them, blasting them with a grenade. He wandered into the room and I heard him use his taunt "Everybodys gotta die sometime, red". Hah hah, yeah. I lunged down off the pipe as he walked in a circle and chomped him. Two bites and he was toast. Hee hee! I crawled back up to my hiding spot. Well, they knew where I was and I had about half the resources I needed to get a hive online. I waited and heard a marine coming in. I decided he might know where he was and listened as he took the left entrance. I wen't around the right and dropped to the ground right behind him, and chomped him to pieces. Almost there. Well, now I'm scared. I am sure the commander has figured out my game, but the enemy is out of rps. Three marines with LMGs walk into the room. "Objective Completed". So . . the commander had put a waypoint here. I'l teach him that he is just ordering marines to their deaths. I peak out. One is looking in a hole full of water, the other is standing beside the last one on a mound on infestation. Hmmm . . The two on the mound first, than the guy by the water. Ready . . . 1 . . 2 . . 3! Lunge! CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP!!! Lmg fire stitches the walls of the room, hitting me in places, but not enough. The two fall and I jump toward the last marine, who whirls around and hits me hard, removing all but 10 hitpoints. Chomp!
I have enough rps now. I become a lvl 2 and begin the hive. I than evolve to a level 1, crawl into a vent, and hide. Waiting for theh ive to come back. The marines arrive. But they cant kill a hive till its up and they dont have the resources to build turrets.
The story goes on for a while after that. But the end result was that we aliens did in fact win, coming back from the brink. Fun times had by all. Well, maybe not the marines . ..

Nice work!

So, as it stands now, the builder starts a building, then can leave, and do other stuff? He doesn't have to actively build it like the marines do?

Also, buildings that are under construction cannot be damaged? Is that final, or are they considering making it so that you can take out buildings as they are being built?

So many stories. I copied and pasted each story into wordpad then sent them to myself using the messenger. I was going to make another topic with all of the current stories but I was unsure if it was ok with everyone or not.

Alien buildings slooooowly autobuild. And can be detroyed very easily when they aren't built. (STC, but I doubt it . .)
• f3rretf3rret Join Date: 2002-05-29 Member: 686Members
I don't get it, Humbaba... you said: "The marines arrive. But they cant kill a hive till its up"

Why can't they kill it until it's up, if they "can be detroyed very easily when they aren't built. " ?
• coilcoil Amateur pirate. Professional monkey. All pance. Join Date: 2002-04-12 Member: 424Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
The hive is the exception. Until it spawns, it's basically "not there." You see it (it grows less transparent as it builds), but you can't shoot it.
