I am happy to announce that I have completed the first version of the greybox layout for the next community mapping project: ns2_temple.

Backstory: A small group of colonists discover an ancient alien temple in the far reaches of space on a planet previously thought to be uninhabited. This is a monumental discovery! Perhaps not "first contact" but at least it has answered the question of whether or not we are alone in the universe! The temple appears to have been abandoned a very long time ago, and has fallen into a state of disrepair. Despite this, there is still plenty left over to study. Perhaps most startling of all is the presence of a massive statue in the "Great Hall". There may be none of "them" left, but now we know what they look like. The colonists' excitement is quickly replaced with terror when they realize what the former inhabitants died trying to bury in the temple. The Kharaa, an alien virus that destroyed the former inhabitants, stealing their bodies to repurpose for its own uses. The colonists have unleashed something terrible upon the universe.

Okay so uh... maybe now is a bad time to ask, but... this game didn't have any sort of back story... did it? If not... I have a suggestion! (See above :D)

Colonists are so convenient when making NS2 maps aren't they :P Fully functioning power, nanogrid system and crates!

I saw your draft before, am looking forword to seeing (playing?) this one.

Myself and a few others had a run around in it and we all agreed that it looks great so far and could have some interesting game play.

PG at Great Hall (south) could possibly be quite strong in terms of res denial.

Look forward to seeing the development of this.

I'm already looking forward to fighting in that great hall. I've seen those screens of yours.

Nice, that could be an interesting map, I'll take a look on soon I guess.

Agreed, but there's quite a few vents leading into that area. As long as aliens get BB fast enough... they might be able to crush that... though can't know for sure until we've played a few rounds on it.

For those who don't know, we will be playtesting this map (and a few others!) on Sunday. Please see http://forums.unknownworlds.com/discussion/126987/custom-map-playtest-sessions for details.

Sorry, fixed now. The url tags are acting screwy. I was trying to get it to be a link that says "this thread", but couldn't get it to go to SCC thread.

Sorry guys, no new build this week. :( Working real hard to shrink down the map, but was just too busy this week.

Build 0.2.0 released on the workshop!

-Drastically reduced size of the map. Not such a walking simulator anymore. :)
-Added ladders and junk to the side of the ship in Aerodome. Sorry gorge-jerks!
-Cleaned up mod directory, removed unused files.

Average walking time to naturals is 11 seconds, down from 15.

From my playtests on this one so far, I like the overall architecture, but it's difficult to see how balanced it is at this point since still in the greybox phase there is so little cover in the long hallways and open rooms. Would like to see a few more vents to give some other avenues of attack for aliens early game, though the hallways/open rooms issue may just make it feel so limited that way currently. Looking forward to playing further as you progress.

Yea the long hallways are definitely a problem... I may throw down a few crates here and there, just as a temporary solution.

checked it out earlier. feels so much better! well done.
There still seems to be a lack of choke points and cover. Might be worth just peppering a load of crates in for the time being. Just to give aliens bit more to defend with
Also DO a quick write up on the background of the map. Not so much a detailed story just give us an idea of Where is it set, visual themes etc maybe find a handful of references... so people can start thinking about the art side of things.

There's already a bit of backstory in the OP of this thread, but I'll elaborate here. Basically, I figure this map is ground zero for a kharaa outbreak (so this is, chronologically, long before tram, summit, and all maps in ns1... assuming there wasn't already an origin story for that). I figure it's an alien virus that took over the inhabitants of the temple. So in many places in the temple, there are statues of things that look kharaa (but in fact, it's the kharaa that look like the inhabitants, not the other way around!) Might could make use of some of the concept art that has already been made for ns2, in particular the painting that's in the docking ready room secret area.

As far as the specific look of the temple, that's all pretty much still up in the air. I was going for a sort of primitive race, that still has access to some technology humans haven't discovered, ie rocks that glow used as a source of light, or perhaps some kind of anti-gravity pillars for decoration.

For the exterior, I'm going for just a dry, hostile environment. The marine areas should be reminiscent of tram and docking, sort of like they've been there for a while... so we probably don't need much of anything custom made for the marine areas at all.

Is it just me, or do I see the hall as the longest shooting range possible?

Nah it's possible to be longer. ;)

Yea it's got some long sightlines in the hall, but aliens get a crap ton of places to hide in there too.

I forgot to take a picture, but in the south-east side of Great Hall South, one of the pillars is floating in the air and alien units can fly up the pillar. Not like it does anything as there is a ceiling, but it is still a mistake.

Hmm... you mean get inside the pillar? That's strange... must've just been a mistake I made when making the pillars more commander-friendly.

I'll check it out later today when I get a chance, and sorry to the SCC about not being able to make it today. I'm incredibly busy with work at the moment.

EDIT: Actually, with that being said, is there anybody interested in working on this map for a few months? In a few days I'll be starting full time work on an independent feature film, and almost certainly won't have time for NS2 until July or August. Rather than just let the map sit for a while, is anybody interested in helping me develop this map in the mean time? I won't disappear entirely, I'll still be around to provide feedback and suggestions, but won't have time to do much actual mapping. :(

Okay, here is various replays from the maptesting session yesterday.

    MrOizo: http://www.twitch.tv/mister_oizo/b/533417275
    Cr4zy: http://www.twitch.tv/cr4zyb4st4rd/b/533409137
    Vindaloo: http://www.twitch.tv/vindalo0/b/533401580

As far as I know, it is not very easy to give some feedbacks for a map without any textures at the moment, teams were unbalanced and that was 1 Marine win & 1 Alien win.
Most of use think the layout & the map get a lot of potential for the future and I agree with this opinion. We are all curious to see what you will do next, textures & all the stuff to be added. The layout is original enough but as I said, we cannot give any constructive feedbacks for now.

Thanks for playtesting it guys! Sorry I had to duck out early from the twitch, but I'll watch these 3 as soon as I get some free time (which admittedly might be quite a while :( )

I'll make sure the next release is fully textured.

some things I noticed during playtesting (might be on stream, didn't watch them):

    c1918cd4e3.jpg

I guess this is occlusion geometry

I don't think I'm supposed to look through the floor in Aerodome

Bah! I knew about the occlusion problem in Tomb, but not about the missing bottom on Aerodome.

Well I won't be able to do anything about it until I get home in a couple of weeks. :( And I still haven't had the chance to watch the streams from the playtest a few days ago. Internet here is really spotty... posting here is about all I can do -- no video. :(

No worries, anyway, there's no emergency or something. Your map seems to be very thrilling & original but for a while, I'm pretty sure we gonna work & improve the other maps like Fracture, Caged, I don't know. We will do whatever we can do on these maps & if we're lucky, in few months, we could work entirely on Temple.

But definitely, Temple is, in my opinion, one of my best expectations (even if that is only greybox for now).

Was browsing for some inspiration to my next area for prison, and I fell upon these. You need to take a look at these Beige and consider them for the mid area :D It's concepts from John Carter, I think that tech / primitive style falls nicely in line with what you want.

They looks really sweet, but they would all need some serous modifications to be ns2-friendly, especially that last one. Aliens would get slaughtered in this area.
