A suggestion from Max, the Technical Director & the man who made the engine:
If you are experiencing network related issues (999 ping, red plug icon, cant establish connection to server, authentication issues etc) please run this command in your console (~ key) :
net_log 53

Then after your problem is sufficiently experienced / captured, exit NS2 (DO NOT RUN IT AGAIN OR IT WILL ERASE THE LOG)

Check in your hidden Appdata folder (Windows key + R, type %appdata% then go to Natural Selection 2) and see the now very lengthy log.txt

Copy and paste the entirety of the log to pastebin.com and then put a link to it here, along with the description of your problem and your DXDIAG report (or run your techsupport.exe to generate a zip file with it)

We also need to know if you are using a wireless connection and if you have tried changing the wireless channel? (from 6 to 3 for example)

Thanks for helping! This will really help gather more accurate data on whats occuring for you guys out there having these issues!

Go to your router's settings (you may need to google how to do this with your particular router model) and change this:
Max NAT/Firewall Session Per User : Change from default 1024 to the max 4096
The name of this setting may be different depending on your router!

Start --> services.msc
Stop SSDP discovery service [SSDP network discovery]--> anwer Yes to the dialog box (to be done after each boot).
Control Panel --> internet/sharing center, "change advancing sharing settings" tab --> Turn off network discovery.
And then, in the router configuration (example: http://192.168.1.254)

http://pastebin.com/STsJekVm for the dxdiag report.
It would be very informational and helpful to all those who have posted:
Do you own a Thompson router? (be sure sometimes they go by different model names)
The "Client: Resending reliable 0 (send 150 ms ago)" supposedly is simply stating that it cannot connect to the server. i.e. there zero communication or acknowledgement whatsoever.. so its not like a dropped packet or lack of authorizing.. it simply gets zero return when pinging it.
So I have a theory that is completely my own and worth investigating: the server browser could be listing servers that aren't there. (i've seen some browser oddities lately)
Since i cant reproduce these issues from my end, could i implore some of you to triple check that these servers you are attempting to connect to actually exist and are up and running and ofc match the IP? Screenshots would be appreciated, comparing the console printout of failing to connect and the same server up and running on a website.
You can use these websites as a replacement server browser to confirm this:

Soooooo I installed Beta build 229 and launched it.
First problem : when I click on Play, sometimes servers are displayed, sometimes the list remains empty (even clicking cliking on "Update"). I have to click on "Back", then "Play" again to display a list of server.
I selected one Server with only 4 other players
Loading Screen progressed as normal.
Then entered Ready Room and successfully entered game
Soon after Red Plug Icon appeared (5-10s)...
However, I repeat this test a few time, and one time, I was able to have a game without the red plug icon.
Concerning Routeur problem, I found this on Steam page : https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article...=1452-HCVB-6984
Is it applicable to our problem ? I tested the fix with the two files to be copied in Steam config folder, and the only effect (with Build 228) is now my server list is totallly empty, which was not the case before.
Glad to know its commonality and a clue!
Could you please indicate where to find information about possible corrections/workarounds ?

Damn thomson routers..
:-D
edit added these links to the OP
I'm able to join a server occasionally by trying over and over, but when I'm inside I get the red connection indicator and my ping jumps to 999. However, once I spawn, I'm fine (ping <30). Game plays completely normal.
Every time I die and respawn, though, my ping spikes back up to 999 for about 15-30 seconds. This also happens during other "respawn" type actions, like going through a phase gate.
This problem is intermittent. I bought the game on release day and didn't experience this problem until this week. Then yesterday I had no problems, and today the problem has returned.
Here's the connection log: http://pastebin.com/xvRjbZBw
- Windows firewall Closed
- No other anti-virus or anything (not sure but there might be microsoft security essential)
- Modem security settings at NONE
- DMZ forwarded to my computer
None of these worked out for me.

This problem began after 229 release , before it I was playing without a problem. Also my friend (who was not able to play a game without a problem since the release) is having this problem too.

This particular instance it was happening almost every time I was killed by an Onos in operations on mineshaft.
I have a NETGEAR RP614_4 router.
I did the following steps:
-opening up NS2
-activating net_log 3 via console
-pressing Play -> Serverlist builds up relatively fast (often times it's very slow)
-selecting a server with nice perf/ping -> doubleclicking it
-Loading screen appears and gets soon interrupted by "couldnt establish connection ... "
-returning to the server list -> server list empty (because the whole internet got f**** up by NS2)
-exiting NS2 (like I DID SO OFTEN)
End of log.
Pulling the internet cable out and in again will re-establish my internetconnection.
The rare cases when i could join a server occured when i used the "nanogrid" server-list (and/or lowered my maxpings per minute in steamsettings). But even on the nanogrid site there are many non-working-servers in the list!
Here is my NS2 log: http://pastebin.com/Lz92VXXA
And Dxdiag report: http://pastebin.com/Le6yXpzL
PS: I want to try the "telnet" fix which is suggested for thomson routers. But i almost smashed my keyboard in rage, when i realized i cant even do the first step of it, as my "turn windows functions on or off" panel is empty and i couldnt find a solution for THAT.
I am experiencing a problem with latency during the game. When the game first released I had no issues, but starting about a week ago I started to gain "lag spikes" when people with ping jumping to nearly 500-800ms. I am on direct cable connected to my modem and called my provider (Comcast) and confirmed no issues were between us. I recorded a log of both as requested.
DXDiag: http://pastebin.com/WTzKn9cn
Net_log: http://textuploader.com/?p=6&id=MFgAJ (I can't upload it to pastebin as it exceeds file limit size, uploaded here)
Thanks in advance for the support.
Update: Disabled all mods and played 3 games this morning. Experienced somewhat more stable game play although still had the occasional 200ms+ spikes.
UpdateII: I play during the morning/early afternoon and seem to experience no lag. Although during night game play I seem to experience the "bad" lag of 500ms spikes.
So far thats the case.. not much that can be done at this moment. The devs are aware of it though, but no word of any solution.. it really is a crap router that just about every gamer seems to have problems with. (steam in general i guess)
I'll update this post if anything changes.
Thank you so much for telling us the source of the issue, adding to the list of possible solutions!
Have you tried the other fixes i listed on the first post?
Theres more besides the telnet fix
