I've uploaded a version for b215 in case anything's happening on the weekend.

Download is, as always, on the <a href="http://www.duplexgaming.co.uk/downloads/mods/89/insight/" target="_blank">duplex gaming site</a>.

Spectacularly beautiful overlay. One little niggle... The player list header and footer for the Kharaa, should look infested, like the team headers at the top.

The mod could be a little more minimalistic. The bottom "tech" box takes up way too much space vertically, I would rather it but longer horizontally and shorter vertical in order to make the viewing space nicer and better.
  • JuCCiJuCCi Join Date: 2011-08-08 Member: 114961Members, NS2 Map Tester
Remember this must scale. So it will have space with some screens.

Guess future versions could have a minimize button for the bottom bar, and alternative tabs(maybe even for minimized and maximized view) with information to look and compare. :P

    Whoops.

So Insight is now official; It will be included in future builds. I am being brought on board to continue development, support, and polish.

Thanks to UWE for the opportunity and the community for their support!

Just adding my voice to say that this mod is super awesome and that it's no surprise that it would be official because it's so great :D

A feature to put at the end of the "to add" list: drawing tools so that casters can be like John Madden. Maybe like in DotA 2, where you can just hold down CTRL and draw lines on the screen.

Huze will probably have to use lots of his Insight time to polish the mod now, so I wouldn't expect any really big new features for now. The current state of it is nowhere near something you would officially release as part of the game. Parts of the mod need to be rewritten from scratch, so be patient.

Dragon can continue working on his first person spec and mod it into the game, but it's not included in the official version.

This is accurate. I have a few small features planned, but I mostly want to clean up code and polish for now.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before or is planned but one thing I would like to see as a minor improvement to the awesomeness that is the insight mod would be small simple tooltips when mousing over the icons just to help new players. (e.g. mouse over carapace icon and it says carapace). I suppose having the tooltip say what the upgrade does would be nice too, but if that was included it should probably be something that can be disabled via the options menu. Also it would be cool if you could jump to a specific player by clicking their portrait.

And, of course, congrats on your mod making into the game officially :P

You watched our stream (Oxoren on Twitch.tv) when we were casting a few games and asked for our suggestions on a few things. This is the list we wrote. Obviously these are just shots in the dark but these are things we noticed that felt off about spectating the game.

    a) Add an ability to easily spectate an individual from the commander view. i.e. click on a person (or their icon on the side) and easily spectate them in third person / first person
    b) Add the ability to press 1 - 9 / 0 to spectate players in those positions on the side of the screen. Perhaps pressing shift will allow you to do that for aliens or marines. So the player in the first position on the marine team would require you to press 1 to easily spectate him, but the 8th player on the side on the alien team would be shift + 8.
    c) See name tags / hp bars in third person view - for the player you're spectating as well as other players.
    d) See what upgrades a player has chosen (cara, regen) from the commander view. Also for weapons as well (welder / mines)
    e) see names of things in the commander view - if for example a phase gate is dropped it will say "Phase Gate" above the ghost model. Phase gates currently are kinda hard to tell when theyre dropped and a few alien buildings (like shells - specifically what upgrade they have) are challenging as well.
    f) Some way to see the the current make up of a team. i.e. in SC2 the units tab has like 32 x ling and you can know there are 32 lings out. Would be nice to see 6x shotgun or 6x Dual Minigun Exosuit.

    not really necessary:
    a) A way to have the camera follow a unit from the commander view. This is in starcraft 2 when you click and hold on a unit's portrait (or hold down ctrl+f with the unit selected). It will always be centered on the screen and the camera follows it smoothly. This is in the current version but it's slow (updates like once a second) and isnt smoothed.
    b) Somehow make a room not completely pitchblack when the power goes out before it transitions to red emergency lighting.
    c) tooltips for the upgrades in the center (i.e. hover over the currently blank welder icon it will say "Research Welders"). (previously mentioned by prevertbreasthound)
    d) be able to use your mouse scroll to adjust camera orientation i.e. sc2
    e) ping where a distress beacon is happening on the minimap
    f) ability to watch another person's camera. being able to watch another spectator's camera would help a lot.
    g) the player list doesnt work for large (pub) teams at 1280 * 720 (aka 720p) (usually the 10th (or 11th) player is cut off) on the right side by the tech point list. not too big of a deal but worth mentioning.

But yeah. If you have any questions or anything feel free to ask.

    Hey Huze,

Used Insight for the first time since official inclusion yesterday, I love it but found it annoying that whenever I used space to go from 'Commander view' to go into the action on my screen, it always jumped to follow the same player on the alien team, who was never involved in the battles I was trying to spectate.

Is there something I'm missing, or should the camera cut to one of the people involved on the battle currently under the crosshair?

The spectator system is still very raw. It's functional, but not super smooth, so features like that are not in yet. It will all come eventually, but I guess it's good to have a lot of feedback so you can make a good TODO list. :D

I've been doing a lot of GUI stuff recently, and neglecting usability a little bit. I definitely will try to make this stuff better when I have time.

but regarding your problem, don't press 'space' to switch views. You can press 1 to switch to freelook and 2 to switch to overhead. Freelook will zoom down to the floor nearest your overhead view and look at the nearest player.

Hi there, i made a post elsewheree, but this seems a more likely place for you to see it.

Great mod btw, thanks for doing it, i heard hugh say that it has really improoved the chances of ns2 becoming an esport, and u have my gratitude.

I have only 2 minor suggestions.

    1) Whilst in free look, i.e. using wasd and mouse to move around the map, often it would be nice to be able to slow down the speed that the camera moves at to get exactly the right position. Something like holding shift and pressing the movement keys slows the movement of the camera, like if you were crouch walking.

    2) In the bottom right, where the list of hives and command chairs are displayed, it would be nice to have an indicator of which hive/comm chair currently hosts a commander, sometimes when watching streams i find myself wondering if the khamm is going to jump out, or if he is in another hive.

Thanks again for the mod peeps!

Huze Madden Prototype I made yesterday and this morning. Allows you to draw on the screen or the world with custom colors. I'm hoping to get the lines thicker and there's plenty of bugs, but I just wanted to show it off.

Nice, can I ask though, why would there be drawing on the world? I mean, in a competitive match, if the caster suddenly starts drawing on the world, or even in a pub game, it's going to be a bit odd :P

The drawing is all done client side. You won't be walking around as a marine and see giant male members on the ceiling.
