Oh an expansion... now im looking forward for that too... xD
... as in pay more money for stuff in NS 2 expansion ?
... like what most gaming companies call paid for DLC ?
Adding stuff in patches later is fine by me, selling stuff to add to the game via DLC or Expansions would dissapoint the hell out of me.

My biggest worry about something like that would be the fracturing of the community.
Thats why I am querying the use of the word expansion ... not going off on a rant. I wish first to verify what Cory means by ' the expansion '. Now I may be wrong here, after all I am not a world expert on the US variant of the English language... but usually expansion used in the context of game development doesnt usually mean updates ( content patches), it usually refers to content the gamer buys after the game is released.
Well if it IS Expansion they're talking about, then I hope its EVE Online's form of Expansion where they bundle up a whole crap-load of updates, name the update something Epic-like, then release it as a patch for free to its customers, who I guess are paying monthly but the idea still stands I think.
Updates are bug fixes or small additions or are tweeks that address balance issues. Expansions are significant changes or large visual additions that can effect gameplay but not always. An expansion does not always = forking out more money.
personally I am not concerned but still for everyone else, maybe he should explain what he ment by expansions just to clear things up.
Just a small realism nit-pick but how exactly is the jetpack "holding-on" to the marine.
It would seem that the harness is more of a backpack... kind of missing the leg loops that you see in every single full-body harness in existence. It's not like the armor has an integrated harness from what i see, where the jetpack just attaches to the armor.... unless this is the future and the pants the marine is wearing are so super strong that the belt loops double as harness attachment points lawl.
Leg loops still would make it look more complete imo. Less like a little kid with a gigantic backpack :P

Hopefully would be significant update, stuff like female marine, another art/map set, some additional gameplay features that don;'t make the v1.0 cut, etc.
We definitely don't want to nickle and dime the community over content.
However, a lot also depends on sales of NS2. If you guys help us make it successful enough that we can keep the company running, it allows us to continue working on more free updates, content releases, and support, after we have shipped.

Again, just finding that balance between realism/visuals/development time
Like Cory mentioned, there were will be tons of free map, model, sound, weapon, balance, bug, etc. updates to NS2. This is a big thing for us. We don't want to splinter the community by having multiple games that people are playing.
Of course we may decide to do a bigger expansion later that costs money (ala Brood War), but we're focused on making core NS2 great first. Who knows what the future holds?

QUOTE

At this point, the money and significant time to create the female marine (just from the animation time alone, since the marines have by far the most animations of any model in the game) would be put to better use on the rest of the game, since it's purely a cosmetic enhancement and doesn't impact gameplay.

Similar in that they both coincidentally have side thrusters, but beyond that, I feel they look pretty different. Sorry, never played Global Agenda, so I wasn't influenced in the design for the Jetpack by that game. But it's pretty hard to design something as ubiquitous as a jetpack, machine gun, etc. without ending up with some similarities to other games, movies, illustrations, etc.
All jetpacks look roughly similar, be it in games, movies or other forms of media. They either have one big booster on the back, or side-thrusters (or both).

i'd rather the multiplayer have a push/pull story or map progression - i don't play single games (unless they are 99/100 score) cause what attracts me to games is the (anti)social aspect :)
It is worried, I'm expecting updates to break Christmas occasionally.
I do have to say that the new "Run NS2 or Run Launchpad" chooser in steam is annoying, I hope that the launch pad gets moved to the tools section eventually (at or before beta).
I do appreciate that it is a business and you do need to make money, thats why I was happy enough to pre order NS 2 and I am geniunely thankfull you dont intend to 'nickel and dime' the community.

pretty sure they mean expansion - as in updates.

I would just appreciate some clarification here.

Also, based on the animations available in the viewer i think the lift off animation for jetpack is going to be awesome.

Maybe not your gameplay! xD

But not all of them have an arse-flap though :)
A sp campaign would be brilliant.
And free multiplayer additions so the community isn't splintered.

Seems like they screwed more up than fixed :S. Bad update.
