welding puzzle
It was mentioned in one of the pod casts a while back that welding maybe a marine counter part to DI. And the rines would be able to weld lots of different stuff. It was also mentioned that the welding maybe a sort of skill. I was woundering if this would be kind of like the microgames in some other action/shooter/rpg games. An example would be lock picking or persuading people in Eldar scrolls oblivion, or hacking in system shock two. These mini games are just simple logic and skill based puzzles that if you beat them you get a result. Would welding or some other activity in ns2 take a similar format?

In the examples ive given the mini skill games take place outside of real time, in ns2 it would have to be done in real time so there would be a speed part of the skill as well as logic and reactions. Could something like this appear in ns2 for welding or some other activity such as hacking, or building, DI growth, if so what would the pros and cons of it be, and how would it be implemented technically?

skill puzzles belong in RPGs... and NS2 (hopefully) is not an ORPFPSRTS game (online role playing first person shooting real time strategy) game

Sort of like Bioshock? I like how that game insults my intelligence by making me play a minigame straight off a 7 year old's educational cd.

    NO

Minigames are generally used to break up the action in a single player game. I think it would be the wrong direction for NS2 if there was a minigame while fighting kharaa.

I think a mini game would also distract people too much and kind of seems out of place too, hoewever It would be a nice idea concerning the DI vs welding if say a marine would counter the DI by welding a nano-grid-terminal or something. So instead of playing "weld the floor" every 5 seconds, someone could weld a nano grid plate that would kil all the DI in an area? And maybe if the aliens took it back, the DI would cover the nano grid plate causing it to go down again. *shrug*

But yeah, no mini games please.

whos ever played the flash game get the drunk home

    home drunk run full

well i figure this could be a very interesting mechanic welld a door closed except when your trying to draw a strait line the welder spazes out and you need 75% perfect seam for something to hold, if you get a 90% perfect seam only onos or fade can rip it down or bust it up.

I thought that was what Unknown Worlds was describing in the pod cast, the idea that the welder would be more than just a "use" gun, where you use it to place a weld on a seam.

Is it just me, but does the welder kinda act like a swiss army knife for the marine? If you need it to cut, bingo, if you need into patch a connection, bingo, if you need it to find all the weak places and even replace lost armor, bingo, if you need it to lock something down, bingo...

My guess is it actually does this by use of focused energy, lets say, a laser, and spray specifically programed nanites that are empowered by the "laser".

So, say you need that door locked down, aim and follow the seam, you have a connection between the plates where there was none before, now it needs to be broken for anyone to pass. So, as a Kharaa, break the door? Now they have nothing to weld. If you are a marine, then you are going to need to cut through, which I imagine would also break the door. That could be a limitation on welding right there, and if by mini game you mean "follow the outline of the door" then you got it, right?

I think such events do have a place in NS2, it would make for very intense moments: "Private, weld this door shut, now!" "Yes sir! Cover me!" "C'mon, c'mon, c'mon..." "Done!" "Oh sh... They are behind us! We just made ourselves a dead end! Argh!"

Only mini game I can think of is Casino-like machine which has a hammer attached to it. You put in a coin and you get 30 secs to smack as much skulks as you can <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />. Then if you smacked enough you get ammo or hp pack...
    just joking fkorz...

no mini games.... maybe as addon but not in MP

i think it would be fine aslong as the mini game happens in the game world - the player hits "E" to open a small fuse box type thing on a huge door, the fuse box has say 9 wires or cables, the commander then clicks on the now open/exposed fusebox and 4 out of the 9 wires light up. the player with the welder then has to quickly weld all 4 of the glowing wires. the huge blast door then activates.

or tracing a line with the welder where the door meets the wall to unlock it, or weld it shut.

or minigames were physics are involved, one marine holds a large piece of metal in place, another marine with a welder then uses the welder on the edges of the metal to weld it into place.

or marine buildings , such as a res tower is made out of 5 main peices, middle part, 4 legs. the marines have to rotate and assemble the peices of the res tower together, andt hen press a button on it to activate it.

i would hate for minigames to happen in another unrelated menu like screen, like the stupid pipe game in bioshock.
