I started a clan called "BobTheSkulk" and invited everyone that's posted their names in this thread. I'll post some screenies later today.

After playing this game for a while, my impressions are as follows:

    It's a bad game.

    Terrible.

The interface is clumsy, the weapons are gutless, the gameplay mechanics are cheap. It's Wolfenstein: ET all over again with a different setting, there's even a panzerfaust that takes a second to charge up before it fires, making whining sound as it does so. The mouse cursor is laggy and sloppy in the menus. The vehicles are poorly simulated. They remind me more of the jeeps in cs_jeepathon3k more than anything. Map goals are accomplished by spits and spurts as an engineer manages to get a few percent of the EMP tower built before he gets shot.

Firing a weapon is not a satisfying experience. It seems that they don't even shoot at a regular rate. There seems to be random pauses and irregularities in the rate of fire. Hitting something seems to be a matter of luck. Dodging back and forth jumping like a maniac seems to be the norm in combat.

    Since I promised some screenshots:

I won't be buying this unless I see massive changes. It's not a good game.

    --Scythe--

P.S. It's worth noting that I didn't like Wolf:ET either. Loved RTCW though.

I think the mouse lag and sputtered fire are bugs. I get both problems sometimes. For the first night I played it, I saw neither problem and I cam away from 3 hours of play thinking that the feel of the weapons was one fo the best aspects of the game.

    Welcome to quake.

Count me in for the clan, I'm curious how the clan interface works. <3 the name.

You don't jump like a maniac in quake games, it's carefully structured jumping. This is just spasmodic jerks in a random direction.

Oh... and no voicecomm? This is 2007, get with it.

    --Scythe--

P.S. Like I said, I've invited everyone in this thread to the clan. If you didn't get the invite then there's a problem. Comprox is the only one that has accepted the invite thus far.

I played the game last night for about 4 hours and my first impressions of it are very positive. There are some issues to be worked out balance wise, but the game feels really solid and looks extremely good. Not once in the entire 4 hours did I feel like I was missing because of netcode. I absolutely love the Strogg jump pack. It is difficult to figure out your turret direction vs vehicle direction, so I'd like to see a very clear indicator for it on the HUD.

Don't mind sonic, he hates himself when he gets his own hair cut, until he gets used to it!

If you're in the beta, add me to your friends list. My account is puzl.

agree with everything you said there.

wish EMPs weren't limited to snipers though. they really shouldn't be close enough to vehicles to use those nades in the first place :/

legendary quake netcode at least. trying to snipe a moving target on BF2 was futile, on QW it's pretty easy.

really don't think it should take 5+ rockets to destroy turrets.

    love the strogg tech

happy that anti-armour infantry (rocket launchers) aren't useless against other infantry. in BF2 it's rock-paper-scissors with the units meaning that sooner or later you're guaranted to come up against a player who will mop the floor with you, even if he's half the player that you are. doesn't hold quite so true in QW.

sniping is largely ineffective, with inifnite sprint and jump you can out-hop most snipers.

having lean + prone doesn't suit the pace of the game, imo.

bizzare that detail doesn't adjust when you're scoped- it has a pixellated look (like a voxel-based game- delta force?)

    yay for infantry-focused combat.

not too sure if i like the gametype. attack vs defence means you're always in the action, but it comes down to hoping you can get into a room before the enemy wave does.

falls short of the hype, but it was hyped up an amazing amount. probably a tad better than BF2 (if you try to compare); but if you prefer slower-paced more tactical combat, BF2 is for you.

a damned sight better than the bf2 demo, where the map was nothing more than flat land + sea.

p.s. in-game name is sherpa, add me.

    e/

as for performance, i have a low-spec pc (3700+, 1GB RAM, 256Mb 7900GT) and it seems to run fine at 1024x768, high detail and x2 AA; though in combat I swear I move my mouse enough to track an enemy but it feels really sluggish. maybe a bug, maybe my fps is low enough to do this. maybe im just bad at aiming. load times are fine, about 30s when loading the map the first time, instantaneous after that.

query why aliens would set up a base in a Jap sewer system, though.

I'd like the objectives to be clearer, and frankly, the entire UI needs an overhaul. Too much crap on my screen.

Otherwise, I enjoy it. The netcode is rough, but I'm sure that'll improve. The engine feels rough, and I also feel like that'll improve most likely.

Oh, and FFS: I see that I'm getting XP, but I never see anything about my info or my group. This is a huge loss considering ET's levelup and group system really generally encouraged me to not only play right, but play to win- and this not so much.

Mixed thoughts by the looks of things. I'm fairly sure some or the stop-start stuff is down to teams not playing together well. Imagine how ###### NS would feel if you knew nothing and neither did any of the other team.

The bugs will be fixed I'm sure although that is annoying, but it's a beta. I'm more looking forward to how the weapons perform and how the map's laid out. From what I can see I think it's a nice touch the end-game is brought indoors so the defending team isn't trapped inside their base by overwhelming armour.

Still waiting to download this and give it a whirl (for free). And I still have my doubts about unidirectional, spawn-shifting gameplay, but we'll see about that.

P.S. sherpa, you have very similar specs to me, what FPS are you getting?

Why is it still for subs only?

My first few games of dystopia were REALLY fun - it was like herding cats. It was fun because I was clueless, but everyone else was clueless because the mod had been released less then an hour ago. I feel that quakeET is going to very similar to this until people learn the maps, or in this case, map. I think that counting this against the game would be a mistake.

afraid i dont know. i changed one of the config settings (think was something like seta cg_showfps) but it still doesnt show it. at 1024x768 on high detail and 2xAA it appeared fine (but aiming is really sluggish- im assuming it's not a frame-rate problem).

anyhow, when i click on 'recommend' the game puts everything on high but turns AA off.

    I still like it.

This has to be the most stable beta i've played. No lag, no stutter, no crashes. And the best of all, it runs friggin amazing at 1600x1200 for me.

Only bug i have encountered is severe performance drop on an Nvidia card if you have 2 screens set up (main monitor and TV) as Dualview. With that setup i barely managed to play at low settings at 800x600 but when i set it up as Clone in the Nvidia Control Panel, i can play 1600x1200 easy.

And i have no idea how the clan or friends thing works, i just see the names in the list, dont know what to do with them lol

So if you are experiencing low performance and mouse lag like i did, and have 2 monitors/tv set up, try changing to clone or single display.

Change the aspect ratio in the other drop down box to 5:4 TFT instead of 4:3 and you get the option of 1280x1024.

Btw, how do you take screenshots and where are they stored? Scythe?

It said in the options it was F12 and i tried that a few times but it didnt store anything anywhere i can find.

Unless they are gonna do a big arse overhaul this game isn't for me. It feels like Q3 in UT with bf2 style-ish setting. As mentioned, it goes pretty fast and sure if it's meant to be but it simply makes a a lot of features just feel flooded in a mass of carnage. Shooting off tires, repairing in battle and more all feel pretty much useless or not worth the time. It is a nice frag fest but im sure it wont get a hold of me much longer.

I'm seriously tired of seeing all these different descriptions for the game. "It feels like X crossed with Y plus a bit of Z." Everyone just ends up describing Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, which is of course what this game is based on. It's like trying to describe Half-Life 2 as a cross between Doom 3 and Max Payne or something, instead of just saying it's like Half-Life with some new stuff added.

yeah, but the gap between RCW and QW is pretty huge. and now almost everyone has played BF2 and 2142 and QW just feels...bad comparatively :|

I heard there was a fps cap at 30 fps or something. Can anybody confirm that?

I hope this game gets fixed for retail. I really am in need of a good team based shooter. BF2 is fun but the bugs annoy the hell out of me.

i too thought sniping was useless...until i discovered a gem...a gem called the flying drone!

it's like a remote control bomb!, paired with a the railgun the sniper is REALLY good (was top of the server!)

    seta com_showFPS 1

There is an fps cap, but it can be unlocked.
I can't load the page now, but there's a sticky at http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/ that explains how to do it.

config commands from quake4 seem to work.

I haven't enjoyed an online shooter this much in about 3-4 years.

I don't understand how the objectives can be any clearer. The voicover shouts at you "defend the emp generator" repeatedly, and there's a very prominent waypoint icon both on the map and on the hud. If they did anymore, sure you'd get benefit from it the very first 2-3 times you play a map, but it would become an annoyance fairly quickly.
