Apparently while making things shiny was high on their priority list, making things run on many computers wasn't. By limiting themselves to the most recent generation of cards they have essentially cut most of their player base from the get-go. But perhaps this is just because they have not optimized the engine. Who knows!

I played the game last night for about 4 hours and my first impressions of it are very positive. There are some issues to be worked out balance wise, but the game feels really solid and looks extremely good. Not once in the entire 4 hours did I feel like I was missing because of netcode. I absolutely love the Strogg jump pack. It is difficult to figure out your turret direction vs vehicle direction, so I'd like to see a very clear indicator for it on the HUD.
Don't mind sonic, he hates himself when he gets his own hair cut, until he gets used to it!
If you're in the beta, add me to your friends list. My account is puzl.
If i was carmack i wouldn't retire, hes too much of a legend and anything he does will go down in history. Only things that will be remembered of him in a hundred years are the games he made.
The good news is that the technical reqs for this beta are completely for testing purposes and the fact that the engine is not fully optimized yet. In the words of fewl, the graphics can go "Uberlow" so older systems shouldn't have huge problems.
The bad news is that the way the game picks out whether your computer can handle it seems weird at best.
My question is, how large are the maps, and what's the max # of players in a game? See, I like the Battlefield games, except that sometimes when there's not too many players, it's really hard to find some action because the maps are just too freaking big. I guess what I'm asking is, is the action always relatively nearby?

32. The maps however are optimized for 24. If you've ever played dystopia (or wolf ET in fact), the way the objectives work is in fact exactly like that. There is an attacking team and a defending team. The map is essentially a long series of objectives, but each objective is in it's own area, to make sure the teams stay in close contact. Like in Wolf ET, you can expect that there will be constant fighting, even though the player count isn't quite as high as games like the BF series.

The one map in the release is reasonably large. To judge it in real terms, it feels like about 1km long and 0.5 km wide. The map is divided into two main sections, there is a compound converted to a strogg fortress, and there is the area outside the compound that contains a couple of IDF spawn locations and an EMP generator complex. The IDF have to first build the EMP generator to destroy the strogg shields. They then have to plant explosives on the entrance to the sewers and finally they need to hack the sewer controls to win the round.
While playing the game you get voice acted commands from a commander. This works like the hive mind voiceover in NS and between them, the HUD and the map, you have a very clear idea of where you need to be at any one time. Few of the games I played suffered from the 'herding cats' problems you have in BF1942.
My account is Comprox in the beta as well. Add away!
My first impressions seem to be like Redford's, it is very dystopia like in the objectives, but has a UT feel with all of the vehicles as well. Vehicles, in the one map, are mainly just used for 'getting there' from what I have seen since half of the map is indoors. The game uses a tooltip style thing which is helpful but got me killed a lot at first as I sat there reading new information every 5 steps <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> Fighting is almost always going on with the spawn points adjusting as points are captured (not sure if the defenders can re-cap lost points, but I don't think so). So far it has been fun, but nothing has jumped out at me making it stand out from similar games.

I don't think defenders can Spawn from forward spawn points, but they can recaputer them.
My nick is Thragnar (grumble, they don't let you change your player name from your sign on name, the filed to do it is there, but they don't let you)
The battle flow currently is rather strange.
Strogg are often best off with just lots of engineres (disarming bombs, planting mines, and static deffences).
umans need soldiers (baricade and sewer grates), enginers (emp device), and covt ops(final objective).
I have seen battles mostly favirign strogg, probably because defending is almost always easier then attacking, and their objectives are nice and easy.
I am also favorign Strogg weapons and skills. The nail gun (actualy a shot gun) is wonderfuly deadly (thus making constructers and technicians rather deadly). The Technician resuply resuplies health and HP in one shot and works indoors (the medic can't resuply you indoors, only give HP). The ressurection is better for humans (one shot and they are up).
I am finding the heavy weaponry seemign to lack any sort of punch. The sniper rifles are rather useless, the rocket launchers take to many hits to take things down, and the chain guns are not all that deadlt....

spawn waves are like 17 secs I think. And it is the one where it is just a constant clock always counting down and resetting (not the Dystopia one where it is based on when and howmany peopel have died)
and attackers tend to have a decent amount of space they have to cover to get to the objective.

The sniper rifle in Return to Castle Wolfenstein multiplayer was fantastic. You had to sit still for a while to let the crosshair stop moving so wildly, and when you hit someone, 9 times out of ten they were down for the count. It was an almost-one-shot killer, but hard enough to handle that it wasn't an overpowered weapon. I have seriously fond memories of mp_beach.
Then when I played Wolf ET, I was like "WTF I HIT HIM IN THE HEAD AND HE DIDNT DIE" and never used it again. My favorite weapon in Wolf ET is the Heavy MG42, the big machine gun that you mount up to use. It's an extremely effective support weapon that can mow down the enemy (provided you can get him in your crosshairs).

For me, its maybe 5 seconds longer than to join a HL2-based server.
My biggest problem is the fact that there is an upward limit to how high you can set your mouse sensitivity. It takes 3 years to turn ><
