ns_agora was cut. I remember seeing that map for the first time and loving it's style. Too bad it never really caught on as a popular map.

I agree about mineshaft as well.

I miss mineshaft, always reminded me of the alien films with its dark atmosphere <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

mineshaft is still fun to play in 3.2 every once in a while. its rough without map labels though, half the team gets lost <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":0" border="0" alt="wow.gif" />

And I don't get why rebirth had to go, but umbra is in with the same wierd performance problems.

    co_rebirth was pro.
just an ironic reflection, having "rebirth" and everyone rushing the hive with shotguns xD <3 starchy!!!!!

Rebirth has at least two massive exploits in addition to the performance issues. Ian (the mapper) went from submitting new builds almost weekly to disappearing completely, so the map was pulled.

Agora I never liked, but Mineshaft, even if it wasn't a balanced map, was a quite enjoyable to play (bar U-turn, I truly loathed that place)

It most definitely sucked major resources, right up there with the original ns_hera.

What two exploits are you referring to? PM me if you feel it's necessary.

I always liked ns_agora, it was one of the first "new" maps I ever played, and remain one of my favorites. Fortunately, I have it on my hard disk, so I can roam around the map <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

I played co_rebirth few times, but I fond it pretty well done, without the exploits and issues, it could be an awesome map.

    And finally, ns_mineshaft is a very good map, but lacks of sound and it's not very balanced. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

yes both mineshaft and agora were both awesome maps, but for quite different reasons

Mineshaft was good because it had a cramped claustraphobic feel to it, and as a map presented a scenario where humans would plausably encounter alien life: a mineshaft on a previously unknown planet or moon somewhere. Its relatively small size also set the scene for some frenzied and fastpaced gameplay. Admittedly aliens seemed to have the upper hand in it and the map could have used some fine tuning, but dumping altogether!? A mistake in my opinion.

And Agora! ah! If i am not mistaken wasnt that the biggest official map in any half life mod? it took a full 5 minutes to do a walkabout tour of it! The huge size made the likelyhood of epic games high and also gave the map an intense, overwhelming sort of atmosphere! Another map dumped way to hastily.

To the designers of these maps my thanks (and sympathies) go out to you.

My favourite part of mineshaft was going into the void and using my minimap.

Wow, some people have some rose-tinted glasses about mineshaft. It was never a good map, Ekaj pretty much disappeared forever so it was removed in like 3.0 b5 or final.

Mineshaft was never a good map, competitive or publicaly. You had to be worse than retarded to lose as marines on the map, it had exploits out the wazoo, and generally had a flawed design and poor aesthetics to boot. Seriously, how do you lose that map as marines.

ns_agora was a great, great public map. And that was fine tbh. I don't know why it was removed, sure no one will ever play it competitively but it worked fine on pubs.

co_rebirth was lollers due to biling-under the floor and from the vent. Back when GLs went through walls, it was lolllllers to camp the vent near the hive and fire a GL and watch 5 kills rack up every round. It was also stupidly easy to spawn-camp with HMG and fades were invincible in marine start. It was still one of the better CO maps though, despite bad r_speeds.

    Rebirth was hysterically fun.

Mineshaft was one of my FAVORITE maps of all time.

The atmosphere was great, Yeah, aliens had a hard time on the map... So what? I loved playing aliens on it. We won pretty frequently too. Against good marine teams... I thought it was fairly balanced, tbh...

LOL my favorite thing to do in co_rebirth was go lerk and spore spam marine start from that little U-shaped vent.

When I was marine I would go beneath that big grate below the alien hive, start making a bunch of noise, then listen for a skulk to break open the vent and run after me, where I would be waiting and then just shoot him <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> It was pretty much impossible to die there and when you make enough noise, eventually somebody gets tempted enough to go down after you, even though they know its a dumb idea.

A lot of newbies and veterans alike would fall victim to me very easily both ways.

Denzil of YO Clan and Black Mesa Source Mod fame is busy working on a total re-build of mineshaft. We will be testing it over the coming weeks/months on YO Regs Nights to see if it will work. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> There may be life!

I bet NS2 is going to have much larger ones. Didn't Flayra say that NS was like the initial skirmishes and NS2 will be the war? I would assume that means much larger scale.

Oh and Mineshaft FTW. A map doesn't have to be balanced to be fun on a pub server <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> Plus I wouldn't think it would be too hard to rework a few hallways to prevent exploits. I'm definetely psyched to see a rework of it.

Wow, long time no see ns_mineshaft. It seems like an eternity since I last played it. I've never liked being aliens on that map much and could never navigate through the map well, but I still like it overall.

Ns_agora is huge! It probably would make a great 16 vs 16 game because its not like everyone is everywhere in this map. I get lost in that map very easily.

Co_rebirth, I've never actually played that map. I wasn't here during the beta editions, maybe in 3.0 b5 but thats it.

well, I liked mineshaft, "warts and all".

I just think back to this time I was at the res near MS (I forget the name), but it had a "shadowed" area behind it in a sort of crawl space.

I remember hearing an onos coming, and hiding back there, and hearing him pass.

not map-specific, of course, but it happened to me on mineshaft. therefore mineshaft is cool to me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

I loved mineshaft, it was THE sensory map aswell. It was also the map where I discovered the new lerk flying system, took me a minute or two just to get off the ground since I kept looking down when flapping <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Was starting to wonder why I hadn't played that map in a long time...Miss it also, liked the cafeteria area also, was fun jumping around the chairs to avoid being devoured by an onos, heh.

Know any servers which still use this map ?

it's the random cinematic moments like these that endears NS to so many.

i think mineshaft and agora should replace the two lamest current maps, ayumi and bast
  • SkackySkacky Join Date: 2005-06-05 Member: 53189Members
I don't think bast and ayumi are "lamest" maps..

Bast has one of the best atmosphere I've ever seen in a video game. It's one of the reasons I love this map. I was surprised myself when I was staring in the Aft, looking somewhere far far away, plus the sounds and the light scheme..

Ayumi now : Ayumi is cute, I really enjoy the ambience of the map. Dunno why, but I really like it. The lights are doing a gigantic job in the map. But, I don't like the flow of the map as a Fade. I was stuck two times this afternoon as a Fade and I get killed very easily, so frustrating !..
This map suffers a little of its "Tightness", but it's one of the best looking maps I've ever seen too.
