Can someone answer me why they remove maps AT ALL? why must some maps be dropped from the official version to make "room" for another. Other hl mods have tons of official maps, why must ns' official pool of maps be constrained?
Personally the only map i dont really like is ns_altair... but i would never be happy if they removed it to "make room" for another map in upcoming versions. You guys remember when nancy was removed? then they just bring it back a few versions later. same with bast. this seems pointless! The more maps the better. Frankly im sick of playing the veil, eclipse, tanith cycle. some variety plz!

We are currently shipping with 25 maps (17Classic, 8 Combat) and have only ever removed 5 maps, 2 of which ended up combing back. For comparisson Counter Strike 1.6 ships with 28 Maps, and has 26 maps that were once distrubted officially and since have been removed.

On Nancy in 2.0 when you'd gestate into an Onos you'd end up stuck in the floor because the wrong clipping-hull file was used to compile. And bast had twice the entitires of what is allowed in the mapping guidelines (which caused massive performance issues). Both of these maps were only brought back because community Members (lead by Lazer and Mendasp, respectively) completely rebuilt them from scratch.
We have only ever removed a map because of severe technical issues or major exploits and even then only after the mapper had abandoned the map (either by choice, or because they lost their source files) so there was no chance of an update. And to anticipate the question we don't release maps but leave them out of the default mapcycle (so people who don't mind/care about the technical issues/exploits will still have them) because we feel that just encourages bloat and if we can't support a map enough to say "hey your server should run this" then we shouldn't be putting it in our installer.

The map pack project has not been abandoned, it just hasn't been organised yet. The plan was to do it after 3.2, and at the time we didn't commit to how soon after 3.2 it would start.
Thanks Puzl, you reassured me. So I could finish my map in time <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

It never made it to a full public release, it was included in a bunch of the 3.0CM builds, but it was not released with the public 3.0Beta1.

If I remember, an official mappack project was planned, but the idea was/is abandoned (?).
This thread is in the mapping section.
