    Quicksave Default = F6

    Quickload = F7

Both of those work for me.

To assassinate someone, either stab 'em in the back or use a SILENCED pistol to the back of the head when he CAN'T see you. Lower left corner there's a meter with a lightbulb under you, that says if you're seen or not.

For that mission I found him near the outskirts of the camp. I whipped out my unsilenced pistol and put a bullet into the back of his head. No alarms or anything. I must've gotten lucky.

A word of advice: Kill the soldiers at the ruined railway bridge asap. Save yourself a lot of pain when going back to the trader. I did it by sprinting through to the other side, you can then turn around and climb up the embankment to the railway up the top, where there's a break in the fence. You can lob grenades down and pick them off pretty easily from up there.

There's a Theif/Splinter Cell element to the game? Very cool, I wish it ran...

I killed him in the outskirts with 4 walls around us, no one saw. I even creeped up with the "low croutch" and stabbed him. I have no silenced pistol right now but if that's what it takes then man what a lame mission

I found out how to lower the sick headbob. In the user.ltx config, located at
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\STALKER-SHOC, i changed the cvars

    cam_inert 0.7
    cam_slide_inert 0.25

    to 0

No more extreme head swaying. Yay. Also worth noticing: I found the artifact that gives 200% health, in the very first friendly encampent, outside the trader. Look for a ladde to a cellar, and break the crate there and pickup <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

damn, inventory management is such a pain. every single bad guy I kill, I have to pause for 5 mins to figure out what to drop to make room for his loots.

I'm hauling around like 100k worth of artifacts I'm hoping to pawn off eventually, but I can't find a trader who could afford em, besides the first guy who's 2 maps away at this point <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

does money actually buy anything useful in this game later on? what's worth holding onto?

also: there was just this bad guy in the basement of the agrocrag labs - holy carp, I almost peed me pants <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" /> so far the game's just been eerie, but that was downright terrifying...

Eee, there's a 2x and 3x weapon damage mod. Makes the firefights REALLY intense.

(Also lets my pistol pack as much punch as this John Woo fan wants.)

This is the only gripe I have with the game.

If I shoot a guy in the chest with a double-barrelled HE IS SUPPOSED TO DIE.

Sadly, that mod also makes the damage double or triple against yourself.
So, if you play on master difficulty like me, you wont even withstand a strafe shot.
When he makes it so it works on everything exept yourself, ill grab it.
  • SurgeSurge asda4a3sklflkgh Join Date: 2002-07-14 Member: 944Members
That could probably be done by simply doubling or tripling the max health of the player, and increasing health pickups accordingly.

Stalker is pretty fun. I'm enjoying being a selfish *******. What? Sounds like some guy is desperately fighting off dogs in that building over there? Well, I'll let the dogs kill him and then loot his corpse.

Also, during the first mission, am I the only one that declined the guy's help with killing the bandits, and then shot him and his two friends in the head to steal their stuff?

I also stabbed the guy in pain asking for a medkit. Its MY medkit.

It's a pretty game, even if it is "old" tech.

I liked this part in particular just because of the dusty grain they added. It's actually quite cinematic in parts.

I've only been <i>really</i> irritated by those characters that have a repetitive line that they will say to you OVER AND OVER again, non stop. Like the guy at the entrance to the "100 rads" bar "Don't just stand there, I said come in! Don't just stand there, I said come in! Don't just stand there, I said come in! Don't just stand there, I said come in! Don't just stand there, I said come in! Don't just stand there, I said come in! Don't just stand there, I said come in! Don't just stand there, I said come in! "

Oh and the professor "Hello? Oh. Hello? Hello? Hello? Oh. Hello? Hello? Hello? Hello? Hello?"

SHUT UP I WANT TO SHOOT YOU IN THE FACE.

God, I hate that place. My friends and I have colloquially dubbed it the Brainrape Zone.

So, anyone got any challenges set up for themselves yet? One of my friends is bound to kill Sterlok with the Sawed Off. I'm going through the entire game just using pistols and the Viper 5, etc.

The first two days I had this game I was kind of ambivalent about it, played it for a couple hours here and there. Then I got an assault rifle, and now I'm addicted.

There are a good number of things that need fixing though. Money is utterly useless, either income needs to be cut drastically or prices need to be bumped way up. Shop selection is kinda crap as well. The artifacts that change your bleed rate do the opposite of what they should, which makes some completely overpowered and others useless. Some stashes bug out and don't contain any items when you're led to them. Someone earlier mentioned quicksave not working, that is apparently caused by having spaces in your Windows username.

Despite it all, it's a wonderful game and I'd recommend it to any FPS fan. Patches and mods will fix it right up.
  • cshank4cshank4 Join Date: 2003-02-11 Member: 13425Members
The bleeding artifact thing could be fixed if they'd give us the damn SDK. Just flip the negative and positive values around, hell, the way they have it just makes sense from a programming standpoint at the moment.

The Missions are also pretty fun, but can turn into a dynamic mess easily.

    2 examples:

    First:
I got an assignment to kill a single Stalker, who has been giving the starting trader troubles.
About 2 minutes later, the missions was completed, although I didnt even move away from the starting camp. So I tracked down the Stalkers body. Turned out he walked straight into an anomaly <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    Second:
Near the Freedom base, I met a group of duty soldiers, who asked me to kill one of the freedom snipers, so they could blow a hole into the wall and attack the freedom base. I accept and walk straight to the freedombase main gate, telling the guards, that I have important info for their commander. Instead of going to the commanders office I climb to sniper tower and knife the sniper without anyone noticing. Missions complete, collect your reward.

Instead of returning to the duty group I strolled around the freedom base, looking for stuff and talking to people. Then suddenly an alarm is sounded. I jump behind an APC prepared to have every single guard on my ###### in the next 2 minutes (I assumed that they found the snipers dead body). A few guards come right my way, but they are yellow and run straight past me to the sniper tower. So I follow them and it seemed like, the duty guys were tired of waiting for me and decided to blow up the wall and attack the base ^^.
I watch the firefight and snatch stuff from the dead. 12 assault rifles, all ranging about 10k=huge profit for me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Would have been cooler if you actually had to find the guiys corpse to know the mission was complete. Adds so much more not knowing he is dead, and then finding the body (I think).

Yeah. There are only two explosives I care about: excessive amounts, and none at all. Anywhere in between is unacceptable. If you can't carry enough explosives to level a city block, I probably won't use them much.

I can't decide whether to side with Freedom or Duty or neither...

either way, this game is awesome. I even have fun doing the repetitive sidequests...

the game starts out pretty damn hard, but gets pretty damn easy as soon as you get the stalker armor and a few good artifacts. The early weapons are so inaccurate and weak, and you die so easy... and now I have a certain green suit and I can pretty much walk into a room and knife everyone while they shoot at me...

of course I haven't gone to the last couple regions yet, I'm sure the bad guys will get hard again... and I'm also only on Stalker difficulty...
  • enf0rcerenf0rcer intrigued... Join Date: 2003-03-16 Member: 14584Members
I swear this game gets cooler with every zone you visit.

I'm in the same boat with the whole "ownage" thing. I've got some really nice acurate rifles and I just pop off headshots so easily now. I'm considering bumping the difficulty level up but I don't think that it will make the game more "fun" just harder. granted I havn't died in a while but dying is just more load time <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I found a silenced assault rifle. Woot.

I've only been playing for a bit. I have to go to that research place. God, crossing The Garbage is such a pain. There are bandits everywhere. I wonder if I could just sprint through the highyl irradiated parts and then use my anti-rad meds.

You know, if they release an SDK, it would be pretty straightforward to make a Fallout mod. And that would rock so hard.

I have a 9800xt - I run the game on med/high at 1024x768. Those are my screenshots scaled down - certainly not bad for such an old card. I've put a custom fan on it but it's not overclocked.

I feel like playing now anyway so I'll take a bunch of screens

I've heard people talk about it running on Radeon 9200s (...which would be cool, because that's essentially just below my laptop's level of graphical power). Some of them had problems (like everything but the sky being black) and others managed to run it alright.

I get to wait for some crazy developer-signed CE from the Ukraine...

...of course, it will most likely arrive after I've departed for Europe for the next half year, so it doesn't really help anyway <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> . It's unfortunate they had to cut so much out, but lots of people seem to be enjoying it (the Penny Arcade forums has a 39 page thread, and the game creators' forums are pretty lively as well). However, I declare that this thread needs more screenshots (...could someone get around to posting one of the SVD?).
