listen this is a load of **obscenity**, guys, if nobody is making any money off of it, i doubt they will care, just realease, they are not gonna know who you are. if you copied their code they might care.
Just release it, Dirty J. The worst that will happen is that FOX will ask you to take them unavailible to download. Just give FOX full credit in a readme.txt.
might as well ask here how do you get the textures out of the avp2 files i can t to them <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
these guys are right u should just release it and even if they try to do something just say "you guys wouldnt answer me when i asked so i went ahead and posted them" then point and laugh
the models are edited..they are not like avp2 models they are yours to do with..you changed the red joints on the models wich means you edited them..its not foxes model now..go ahead and release..fox cannot sue you unless the model is an exact replica..you are fine

I agree with the chap above me - it's ridiculous to let one person't little thing get in the way of a groovy project like this.

yep, surge got it right. dirty_j is using avp2 models (edited to fit the ns skeletons) these meshes belong to fox, as do the skins that are mapped to the models. this would fall under fox itellectual property, and they cant stop him from making them and releasings this pack, but they can insist on him removing the pack for available download from his site or whatever. thing is though once released model packs have a tendancy to multiply exponentially online and there is no real way of stopping this (even with all of fox's virtual clout)
they may threaten legal action (and they do have a right to because it IS their property, even if its been edited) and i have no doubt they would if they found out about it (fox are renowned arseholes) all we can do is hope dirty_j gets the ok from somebody at fox BEFORE he releases, and he MUST retain a copy of the original and reply emails, this is his proof (its been known for companys to deny all knowledge later on if they decide to make an example of him)
i know a lot of people would like to use dirty_js pack, me included, but id hate to see his release marred by all kinds of legal complications, if this was any other company i probably wouldnt have mentioned anything. but its fox and they are usually really very unreasonable people. if they aint making money from something, then it has no right to exist type of thing seems to be their policy.
anyone remember the hl mod aliens? it was based on aliens the movie, same locations characters ect ect. they made a small site, released one screenshot of a worldcraft apc against a skybox similar to the one in the movie, and fox shut them down, this seem right to you? certainly doesnt to me but thats just the way things are in the real world.
but if dirty_j made a totally new model and skins and relased those, then fox couldnt do anything about it, like lucasarts cant do anything about those cs battle droids. why? because they never owned anything but the original concept (the appearance of the model) and they never made the mesh/skins for this new model, subsequently this falls under "fan art" and only the modeller has any claim to the ownership of that. that is unless the modeller decided to sell this new model, thats when a big company can claim that they are losing profits and you WILL be shutdown if they can prove it in a court.
Or play it dirty , don't make a readme text <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Aye, best route, and to all the little morons who won't listen to a word of rational explanation, Dirty has already said what he's going to do. Until then, your blabbering about "just release it, you won't get in trouble" won't do a damn bit of good. Please, dirty made up his mind, and made a good decision. If you can't handle that, big deal, grow up and learn the world doesn't revolve around you and your wants. If you can understand that, leave him alone. You pestering him is only going to have the opposite effect you think it will.
And lastly, it's already been explained, it is fox's material, until it is completely made by someone else. A remnant of a skin or mesh from the original avp2 models makes it partially their property, and they can pursue legal action. The only way anything can be done, is for the models AND skins to be made custom, not ripping from the originals. The stuff some have described doesn't work in this world, that "you changed the skeleton, so it's your work now" is completely false.
All in all dirty, I'm sorry for all the stuff people are prolly pm'ing you, and same with blue, for actually putting some time and effort to make a legal stand. I bet you're both getting pm's out the **obscenity** because of immature little kids who don't get it. I feel sorry for ya, and here's hoping that in the future, dirty will release HIS OWN marines. I'd take custom work over a conversion, any day.
right now i can not risk any chance of getting any sort of lawsuit filed against me
its easy for you to say "oh just do it, they wont care" because you rnt the one taking the risks, im risking a good bit doing it especially with what people say about fox
Wow so much hostility. It's kind of funny to see people get steamed up over something like this to where they begin insulting. Someone should email fox this thread. They might get a good chuckle out of it.
yea let someone else who will take the risk do it..let them convert it..hell give it to me ill do it
email the converted skins here jeped0_2002@yahoo.com ill see if i can change the skins on it..orrr maybe ill just download some custom marine skins from someone who made a model for avp2 and convert that...ill just make sure and ask the creator if i can do that..im sure he wont give a shiznit and a half...beats getting in a dispute with the multi billion dollar company fox...who just cant seem to get enough money..
i still think this is childish, i released thingh from rtcw on the dod forums and never once did i ever get an email from a game company . never. they dont care. i did this for mohaa too, ive taken the **obscenity**, or lack of it for many a model. just give it to me, ill say it was me, and if i get a lawsuit , so be it
lol give it to power line, he doesnt care.. it would be off your hands and he could take the blame! <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Comments
