<b>but the reason i get fired up about it is because it was so overhyped to me by friends, with delighted screams and promises of how they knew i'd absolutely LOVE it, the way it seems a lot of people do. when i got down to it, it was one of the most disappointing purchases i'd ever made, and the hype probably didn't help it.</b>

the best is, dun always trust a review from a fan of a particular anime. usually its biased.

    Jin-Roh

Watched... well yea it's a lot more deeper than black and white, but...

I think it's too symbolic. I mean it's like they need to make an essay about some wolf stuffing at a museum. I get this feeling of cheese. Just too much in the symbol and emotion syrup for me. Conveniently ties at the end... typical?

It seems like they always have to make a reference to Riding Hood after every action like when the man kidnaps her later int he movie.

"We are not men disguised as dogs, but wolves disguised as men"

Eh just seems corny for me.

yeah it was a little heavy on the themes. i agree.

    realistic, huh..

*shrug* People like their poetic justice.

But then again, what would you say for Cowboy Bebop?
    Main character dies.

    Nope.

I think it's just me. I can't handle cliches, not to say Jin Roh was all of that.

I want something new I guess.

I thought the movie memento was pretty interesting... But it also has an emotional appeal. Fight Club was also interesting especially the twist. How do you shoot yourself in the mouth and survive again?

I'm sorry to disrupt your discussion here. I'm not sure what I like anymore. The last time I actually felt great was when I beat Beyond Good & Evil. I'm not so sure what it was, maybe how I rarely got frustrated with the game or the feeling of accomplishment when you beat it...

The main character, conflict, climax, resolution formula I guess it's becoming predictable for me.

yeah, came back out through the back of his jaw. he probably caught a whole bunch of important blood vessels on the way. it's not like that part of the movie was supposed to be overly technical or anything... if we MUST speculate, he'd be bleeding out pretty quickly while they were watching the buildings come down.

RELIZM HAHS NAU PELECE IN AMINE OR GEYMZ!

    lrn2suspenddisbelief.

But for realism...yeah, I haven't watched too many of those. Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop are both faux-realism, just skirting the edges of realism kind of thing.

As for an anime no one's heard of: The best 30 Minute Long Romance/Drama/Angst Movie ever: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voices_of_a_distant_star" target="_blank">Voices of a Distant Star</a>

This was awesome. Made by 1 guy, on an old Mac laptop(for when he made it). Perfect dialogue, wonderful pacing, awe-inspiring visuals.

The actual character designs do seem off at times, but its easy to ignore. Its a slow, thoughtful anime, but for a half hour, it packs more thought and weight than most 2 hour epics that had whole anime series before them to set up the movie's story.

For realism, I would suggest Planetes. How can you go wrong with an anime that has astronauts <i>and</i> diapers!

    <img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f2/DiaperMan.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

And if you want something different, try Yakitate!! Japan. 69 episodes about... bread. I've actually watched it twice now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" />

Also. Never, ever watch dubbed anime! Shows like Great Teacher Onizuka simply fall apart without the original voice actors.

In addition to the three mentioned, I've quite enjoyed the following:

    - Mushishi

    - Eureka Seven

    - Fullmetal Alchemist

    - Kiba

    - Cowboy Bebop.

    - Ghost in the Shell: SAC 1&2, and the first movie. Innocence was sort of pointless, yet pretty. And it had an incredibly well animated dog in it.

    - Full Metal Panic Fumoffu, though you'd want to watch the first season of FMP first to get most of the jokes. FMP I didn't like much - took itself way too seriously.

However, there have been several let-downs, as expected. Notably:

    - Elfen Lied. Unnecessary gore. The concept was simply uninteresting - grow a pair of horns, gain invisible super-tentacles that you can control? Give me a break. Shallow characters due to it being a very short series, which was the only good thing about it. Also, the protagonist was annoying as heck.

    - Monster. Worst villain ever, whose motives, along with the plot, ruined the whole thing for me. If they had dropped the supernatural side, it would've been a lot better in my opinion.

    - Gantz. Nice idea, otherwise terrible. There's even fan service pr0n (sort of) in it... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

    - Last Exile. Again, the basis is pretty good. I think the story fell apart about halfway through. At least it stayed visually impressive.

i really loved elfen lied and death note!

also for those interested in romancy anime i suggest lamune, i"s pure and ichigo 100%

full metal panic is also a decent anime - it's the only mecha anime i like mainly due to the mechs being more of exo-suits.

FLCL: was too ###### up to watch... I kind of liked the character interactions, but when robots started growing out of his head I got bored. The characters became too forced due to the retarded nature of the universe they were being injected into IMO...

Azumanga: Very good character development, a great dramatic comedy. Watching a random group of characters live a fairly normal life has never been so fun.

Elfen Lied: A good combo, character development is above average, and the balance is tilted by incredibly good action and drama scenes. Occasional comedy, but this is mostly a drama series. Also with blood

Berserk: Good but unfinished, painfully so. Mostly action, occasionally reaching into comedy and drama realms, but it's alot of action

Naruto: bad, but addictive. There are worse things I've wasted my time on.

CowBoy Bebob: It's an interesting series. It really isn't the most gripping character development ever done, not the best action, nor the best drama, but it holds it's own almost entirely on a brilliantly crafted set of genera's and moods that run throughout the series. Art is WAY above average...

Trigun: Cutesy but watchable. Some good drama scenes.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: really good. I'd put it in the same genera as FLCL, it's weird as hell, but it's slow enough and contained enough to not scare me off right away. Also the main character doesn't get raped by his brother's girlfriend.

Love Hina: Ugg... It's decent I supposed, but it makes me kind of sick realizing a male conceived this story... If you start watching it you'll probably finish it still, from a pure entertainment point it's quite watchable.

Ranma: OLD! OLD OLD OLD OLD OLD! It's like the anime version of watching Loony Toons or something. Still, I guess it's pretty good if the time traveling doesn't scare you away.

Hellsing: I'm not sure... It was pretty watchable, but kind of required you to step into a little darker of a universe to really enjoy it. I guess I'd categorize it sort of as a really dark version of dragon ball Z. the pattern at least remains. Fight some guy, win, some stronger guy appears, a few filler episodes, fight stronger guy and win by reaching next power level, rinse repeat with more threats and scariness on the line each time... It's a GREAT series in terms of art work and establishing a visual theme, but I guess my complaint is that the plot pattern is pretty generic... It's not the series that will have you crying or laughing though... It just doesn't pull the emotions around much.

That pretty much covers the stuff I've watched that I can remember the title of...

I wanted to ask... from the very small amount of full metal alchemist I watched it seemed highly reminiscent of Naruto. That is to say fairly dry characters running around in a setting that is mostly made interesting by certain liberties the author has allowed on the world they exist in that make them able to do cool things. Could someone who's watched both give me an honest comparative evaluation? I'd far prefer not watching another naruto like series that is basically a long drawn out brain dead epic... The more intelligent series I find much more entertaining.

They were very well done, I'll admit that. But eventually I did stick with the original VA's, despite the fact that I saw the dubbed movie long before I obtained the series itself. I guess it just felt 'right' in Japanese - for me.

Same story with Ghost in the Shell, incidentally.

I haven't watched any of Naruto but I can assure you that FMA has a lot of depth and intrigue. That and it has a solid, concrete ending at the end of the single series and didn't drag on for sixty three billion episodes.

You can thank whatever god you believe in that you didn't watch any Naruto... Even trough the first 90 episodes was somewhat good, the other 910 episodes are total crap-filled-filler-ish with a plot like i described in one of my previous posts.

@ Naruto, according to rumours the fillers stop this friday, \o/

    Atm im watching:

Bleach (filler story gone aswell!, non filler eps much better somehow?)
    Naruto
Ergo Proxy (Good art, slow story but alot of change of scenes, interesting)

Jigoku Shoujo (Also called Freak unless I by some reason named it that) Decent art, good music but looped alot, some looping scenes, original story about something called Hells Correspondance which allows people to send them a message, wanting revenge, the victim is sent straight to hell but to compensate the person who wished revenge is also sent to hell, but not until after their death.
