oh god... this thread makes me a little queasy inside.
Neon Genesis Evangelion? are you guys serious? that pandering pile of poo is one of your FAVORITES?
yeah i <i>guess</i> it was good, if you enjoy being strung along by a wishy-washy, stereotypical japanese emo-kid 'hero' (jesus, can you even CALL him that?), hoping the whole time that you'll maybe stumble upon some kind of PLOT or semblance of long-term entertainment value, eventually coming to the horrible realisation that you are at the final episode and the entire series, which you excitedly blew 170 US dollars on, has culminated in this inept and incompetent wiener's complete and utter failure to accomplish ANYTHING, be it getting laid, saving the world, or even putting on a happy fcking face, and after enduring the entire week you spent watching the damn series, THE WALKING PENOR WITH THE BLUE HAIR IS TURNING EVERYTHING TO <!--coloro:orange--><span style="color:orange"><!--/coloro-->ORANGE GOO<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->.

that was less directed at you Quaunaut and more directed at God, with me shaking my fist in anger and desperation for having ever watched it.
<b>edit:</b> after that little vent i'm sure you're wondering, okay ######, what anime do YOU like?
honestly, i don't like many of them, for reasons you can probably come up with by way of common sense. pandering to audiences other than myself (the jiggle-obsessed, the emo, etc), filler episodes, duplicated frames and generally pointless animated sequences that do nothing to deliver the story or plot (ie: Naruto, DBZ, or "Inuyasha")... you get the picture.
a few that come to mind that were actually fulfilling and entertaining to watch include: -GitS and Appleseed -<b>Akira</b> -<b>Grave of the Fireflies</b> -<b>Jin-Roh</b> -Trigun -Azumanga -Cowboy Bebop & Samurai Champloo (SC being generally more enjoyable for me. i found bebop to be a little dry most of the time.) -All of the <b>Hayao Miyazaki</b> films i've seen, those being: =Howl's Moving Castle =Mononoke =Nausicaa =Spirited Away =Kiki's Delivery Service (lol) =Totoro (how come HE'S good at telling a story through animation and most of Japan isn't? puzzling.) -Gunsmith Cats -Armitage -<b>Macross</b> -Golden Boy
there are probably more out there, but these are the ones that i had little or no problem enjoying.

Well, my problem with it is, you watched it, didn't like it, then went so far as to insult those who did. Furthermore, it seems like you are the prime person who shouldn't see Evangelion. Your entire idea of how a story needs to be is with successes- and one of the beauties of Evangelion is it's analyzation of it's characters. They literally threw them each into positions, with their personality types, and let it play out with only time limits imposed, that being the Angels.
Shinji was no more a hero than a failure, you're correct there- but he summarizes many kids at his age. I know that when I was 12-16, I was pretty pathetically self-esteem trashed. Heck, if you look at my old posts on this very forum from 3 or 4 years ago, you'd see that I was indeed pretty sad, pathetic, and unsure of my life or the future. Shinji was me to a T- the only prime difference being that I didn't want to be a Football Player, I didn't want to be a manly-man, I wanted to be who I felt I was to be, which eventually registered with my mind at 16, and I finally grew a spine. Shinji didn't even get a chance to grow a spine- his life was full of things that would do nothing but confuse a kid who is already trying to figure himself out, along with having the weight of the world on his shoulders.
If you were more confident at his age, I say congratulations, and once again, maybe this anime just isn't for you. I've noticed a lot of people hate Shinji, but one thing I've noticed across the board with them is that they generally are much rougher people in general. Evangelion is the exact kind of anime that requires thought into the intricacies of thought, personality and tact- its more or less a study piece of an anime. Not for bite sized chunks, not for single viewings, not pick-up-and-watch, but instead a focus.
Or, to sum up my feelings: I loved it. Its my favorite!
I really liked Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist and Spirited Away. Really superb in many respects. NGE was crazily weird but enjoyable in parts. I haven't actually finished watching GITS, I gave up half-way through, didn't really engage me. Trigun is a steaming pile of crap. Not enough action and too much "WAIIIIIII ^_^_^__^"
Currently I'm watching <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar:_The_Last_Airbender" target="_blank">The Avatar</a> which was recommended to my by Necro on IRC. Despite the inital impression you'd get from A) It being made in america and B) Made by Nickelodeon, It's actually pretty good. There are a few cheezy moments but generally it's fun to watch. It's a slightly kiddie-ified version of FMA, I suppose. Give it a try and see how you like it. I suspect you'll be surprised.

Bebop and Eva are my top 2(Eva usually holds #1). FMA I actually have had quite a wierd view of- to me, its a wonderful one-watch anime, and I was quite attached to the characters, but later in the series it seemed to get really campy- I didn't need a lot of those characters coming back later. But, overall it wasn't bad at all, and I loved most of it.
Bebop, as others have said, is a genius unto itself. Deep characters, deep story, lots of progression- but none of it has to be payed attention to at all to find it incredibly enjoyable.
Trigun I enjoyed while watching it, but as Scythe put it so elegantly, too much campy-ness later. And, other than Vash becoming accepting of having to kill people, there was no character progression at all.
Also: Outlaw Star is like Trigun, but in space, and with a completely bullish ending. Its like they tripped out to do it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

yeah, i get what you're saying here. i didn't mean to insult anyone.. i think the closest i came was just surprise and disappointment at everyone else's praise for NGE.
don't get me wrong, i enjoy the gamut, from the nonsensical and happy-go-lucky to the outright tragic and depressing.
but the progression of the story, the nature of the characters, the issues they faced and the decisions they made, and the final culmination of the story were all like a slap in the face for me. i gradually found myself recoiling and being shut out instead of being engrossed and involved. by the end of the series i was basically just trying to get it over with so i could sell the box set on ebay. i guess it's just a matter of opinion, <b>but the reason i get fired up about it is because it was so overhyped to me by friends, with delighted screams and promises of how they knew i'd absolutely LOVE it, the way it seems a lot of people do. when i got down to it, it was one of the most disappointing purchases i'd ever made, and the hype probably didn't help it.</b>

Recently I watched Akira on one of our cable movie channels and noticed that most of the voice dubbing was completely different from the original VHS that I own.

WTH? <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> See, back in 1988 the US Release was dubbed by Streamline. Later, for the DVD release it was redubbed with more accurate/sh*tty translations and absolutely sh*tty vocals; thusly ruining a classic.

Probably three or four years ago I started getting into anime, I usually follow 4-6 series at a time now.
Got started with:
DBZ (dub)-The anime that spawned >9000 memes, ridiculous and yet awesome Yu Yu Hakusho (dub)-People don't talk about it now because the animation was too "ancient", but this is probably my favorite. Best protagonist of any series, though I hated the ending I guess it did give closure to the series. Before the last arc there's never a dull moment, reading the manga now Cowboy Bebop (dub & sub)-Classic cool Inuyasha (dub)-First ten episodes are likeable, then you can't stop watching and realize it's god awful Outlaw Star (dub)-Great and with a pretty good dub, I downloaded and watched it again last year, good plot, premise, characters, and action
Currently:
Bleach (dub)- I'd watch it sub but Michelle Ruff is too damn good to pass up. Satisfying action but sorely lacking originality Death Note (sub)- Pretty into it, love it so far. I keep expecting it to get REALLY dull but am surprised every time. Premise seems like a ten episode deal or something, but it just keeps changing. I can totally see this being better as a manga though Naruto (dub)- Actions good but I hear it's downhill from here. Feels too kiddy a lot of the time Eureka Seven (dub)- Characters are pretty lame and I can't follow the plot at all. Still interested for some reason. NHK (sub)- Friggin' crazy, only a few episodes in but very curious as to where it goes from here
Have seen:
FLCL (dub)- My other favorite, I love it so much. The soundtrack is beyond amazing Saint Seiya (dub)- SUP ANIMATION BUDGET. If this was popular it'd top DBZ, I swear to god. This + beer = LOL Wolf's Rain (dub)- Was kind of cool...then really dull...then really exciting in the last few episodes...then a terrible ending that someone should have been shot for NGE (dub + sub)- Strange, so very very strange. Character design was great, but the plot is just to jerk you around. Enjoyable though s-CRY-ed (dub)- Decent, but too simple. They could've done a -lot- more with what was good characters and premise Full Metal Alchemist (dub + sub)- Great, was going to read the manga but stopped part way. Premise is ###### AWESOME with a decent plot but lots of room for character development outside of Ed and Roy. The movie is even better, can't wait til I find it dubbed Rave (dub + sub)- Dub had great voice actors, but the translation itself at times ruined its glory beyond recognition. Probably the best plot and abilities of any series I've seen, and Mashima makes some hot cartoon wimmunz. Reading the manga which is being translated at a snail's pace (still faster than TokyoPop), if they ever animate the rest of it it'll probably be my new favorite G Gundam (dub)- "Anyone who doesn't like G Gundam is a communist". Enjoyable on so many levels, + WINDMILL GUNDAM FROM HOLLAND Haruhi (sub)- Is this a dancing anime? But for serious, it's okay. Animation is cool, second season got shot up by a year because it's so popular. At times is a good series, at others is just good fanservice Princess Mononoke (dub)- Actually saw this in my World Cultures class, liked it a lot. Beautiful and deep
I've seen parts of One Piece (ROFLMAO dub), several Gundams, Hikaru no Go, Prince of Tennis, pokemanz, and probably 5-100 more I don't really care/remember to comment on.

Too many cliches, honest, bright kid which of course is good. Bad guys are always bad for no reason at all other than giving readers someone to say BOO too, when bad guys are also people as well.
So I'd like someone to show me a book where... bad guys aren't bad, just different! Give me a book where they are also developed! Give me a book where the good guys don't always win the final fight or make the last basketball shot in a tied game with 1 second on the clock! Cliches!
The last anime I watched was naruto I believe. Um... I guess I liked the ones by ghibli. Bad guys weren't typical "IMA RULE DA WORLD" freaks, but they actually had some other side to them.
I'm sick of all this LETS FIGHT THE BAD GUYS combat animes where it's supposed to be tough, but the winner is always predictable.

I was all about Jin Roh for months after I watched it. My forum nick used to be Jin Roh. lol
But.. yes. It's truly awesome. Protagonist deals with inner turmoil, stabbing regret, and self-loathing.. but is he gonna sit there and cry about it? No, he's gonna pick up his nasty WW2-era Deutscher-gemacht boomsticks and go blast things, in the name of craziness.
In all seriousness, one of the best put together dramas in anime.

Sorry that I have an opinion?
<b>edit:</b> after that little vent i'm sure you're wondering, okay ######, what anime do YOU like?
honestly, i don't like many of them, for reasons you can probably come up with by way of common sense. pandering to audiences other than myself (the jiggle-obsessed, the emo, etc), filler episodes, duplicated frames and generally pointless animated sequences that do nothing to deliver the story or plot (ie: Naruto, DBZ, or "Inuyasha")... you get the picture.
a few that come to mind that were actually fulfilling and entertaining to watch include:
-GitS and Appleseed
-<b>Akira</b>
-<b>Grave of the Fireflies</b>
-<b>Jin-Roh</b>
-Trigun
-Azumanga
-Cowboy Bebop & Samurai Champloo (SC being generally more enjoyable for me. i found bebop to be a little dry most of the time.)
-All of the <b>Hayao Miyazaki</b> films i've seen, those being:
=Howl's Moving Castle
=Mononoke
=Nausicaa
=Spirited Away
=Kiki's Delivery Service (lol)
=Totoro
(how come HE'S good at telling a story through animation and most of Japan isn't? puzzling.)
-Gunsmith Cats
-Armitage
-<b>Macross</b>
-Golden Boy
there are probably more out there, but these are the ones that i had little or no problem enjoying.
Perhaps it would have been easier to say "I didn't care for it".
that was less directed at you Quaunaut and more directed at God, with me shaking my fist in anger and desperation for having ever watched it.

--Scythe--
Bebop, as others have said, is a genius unto itself.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrA9B6f4g5A" target="_blank">Noein</a>, yeah thats one of the higher caliber ones.
Blood+, good
Then there's guilty pleasures like:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9067Vyf3Z8" target="_blank">Manabi Straight</a>
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5qHfqcWIDo" target="_blank">Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu</a>
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_WG92mt5hs" target="_blank">Excel Saga</a>
_
Ah yes, and I been meaning to get back to this series:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TT0rYm_NjhM" target="_blank">Irresponsible Captain Tylor</a>
Recently I watched Akira on one of our cable movie channels and noticed that most of the voice dubbing was completely different from the original VHS that I own.
WTH?
I'm not a big Anime follower but I figure you guys could answer this:

See, back in 1988 the US Release was dubbed by Streamline. Later, for the DVD release it was redubbed with more accurate/sh*tty translations and absolutely sh*tty vocals; thusly ruining a classic.
I'm surprised at the lack of talk about Trinity Blood. I'm loving it, but it was only mentioned in a list of seen animes
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
It's okay I guess. Hellsing was better.
Got started with:
DBZ (dub)-The anime that spawned >9000 memes, ridiculous and yet awesome
Yu Yu Hakusho (dub)-People don't talk about it now because the animation was too "ancient", but this is probably my favorite. Best protagonist of any series, though I hated the ending I guess it did give closure to the series. Before the last arc there's never a dull moment, reading the manga now
Cowboy Bebop (dub & sub)-Classic cool
Inuyasha (dub)-First ten episodes are likeable, then you can't stop watching and realize it's god awful
Outlaw Star (dub)-Great and with a pretty good dub, I downloaded and watched it again last year, good plot, premise, characters, and action
Currently:
Bleach (dub)- I'd watch it sub but Michelle Ruff is too damn good to pass up. Satisfying action but sorely lacking originality
Death Note (sub)- Pretty into it, love it so far. I keep expecting it to get REALLY dull but am surprised every time. Premise seems like a ten episode deal or something, but it just keeps changing. I can totally see this being better as a manga though
Naruto (dub)- Actions good but I hear it's downhill from here. Feels too kiddy a lot of the time
Eureka Seven (dub)- Characters are pretty lame and I can't follow the plot at all. Still interested for some reason.
NHK (sub)- Friggin' crazy, only a few episodes in but very curious as to where it goes from here
Have seen:
FLCL (dub)- My other favorite, I love it so much. The soundtrack is beyond amazing
Saint Seiya (dub)- SUP ANIMATION BUDGET. If this was popular it'd top DBZ, I swear to god. This + beer = LOL
Wolf's Rain (dub)- Was kind of cool...then really dull...then really exciting in the last few episodes...then a terrible ending that someone should have been shot for
NGE (dub + sub)- Strange, so very very strange. Character design was great, but the plot is just to jerk you around. Enjoyable though
s-CRY-ed (dub)- Decent, but too simple. They could've done a -lot- more with what was good characters and premise
Full Metal Alchemist (dub + sub)- Great, was going to read the manga but stopped part way. Premise is ###### AWESOME with a decent plot but lots of room for character development outside of Ed and Roy. The movie is even better, can't wait til I find it dubbed
Rave (dub + sub)- Dub had great voice actors, but the translation itself at times ruined its glory beyond recognition. Probably the best plot and abilities of any series I've seen, and Mashima makes some hot cartoon wimmunz. Reading the manga which is being translated at a snail's pace (still faster than TokyoPop), if they ever animate the rest of it it'll probably be my new favorite
G Gundam (dub)- "Anyone who doesn't like G Gundam is a communist". Enjoyable on so many levels, + WINDMILL GUNDAM FROM HOLLAND
Haruhi (sub)- Is this a dancing anime? But for serious, it's okay. Animation is cool, second season got shot up by a year because it's so popular. At times is a good series, at others is just good fanservice
Princess Mononoke (dub)- Actually saw this in my World Cultures class, liked it a lot. Beautiful and deep
I've seen parts of One Piece (ROFLMAO dub), several Gundams, Hikaru no Go, Prince of Tennis, pokemanz, and probably 5-100 more I don't really care/remember to comment on.

On that note. The Ghost Stories dub is the best thing i've heard in ages. EPIC.

An animated spin-off from the Densha Otoko (Trainman) tv drama.
In the drama, actor Itoh Atsushi plays the otaku Yamada, who`s main love in life is the Mina anime, a cutesy busty heroine with floppy rabbit ears and carrots sticking out her rear.
Mina itself is a character homage which triggers back to the Daicon Animation done by GAINAX where a similar nameless bunny girl appeared. Densha Otoko futher featured an opening with scenes which were appearing back in the Daicon Animation. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Something more realistic?

Jin-Roh
But..
(On a more serious note: Genshiken obeys most laws of physics. As does NHK.)
