Heard rumors...
As most of you all know, counter-strike and day of defeat are easily the 2 most popular half life mods. In a recent fileplanet poll thingy it said natural selection was the third most popular mod. Any reports of ns going bigtime? I heard a rumor also on a obscure ns clan website( cant remember name). Someone from the ns team please respond to this post so my mind can get some rest.

When 3.0 is FINALLY released, the final version of it, in STEAM in the "mygames" listing you will see Natural-Selection there.
In that sense, yes it is going 'big time'.
lol well first you have to play ns
Game Developers convention last I heard
the game wont aprear in the "my games" list unless it's officially recognized and/or supported by valve (usually means selling the game and rights to valve)
A distant 3rd.
Counter-Strike--2.379 billion Player Minutes / Month
Day of Defeat--168.669 million Player Minutes / Month
Natural Selection v3.0 (beta)--64.909 million Player Minutes / Month

According to the Steam statistics on playing time (more accurate than any separate website's polls on mod popularity) NS is currently the 1st most played mod not owned by Valve, and the 3rd most popular mod overall. Interesting to note: right now I see that NS and TFC both have a near equal number of current players (difference of only 1) but NS has roughly 200 fewer servers and nearly double the number of player minutes a month. This means that compared to a game that has "Team" everywhere down to its name, NS players are in more densely teammate-packed servers and are playing for longer periods of time (presumably because they like it more )

TFC may very well have been the biggest reason Half-Life took off as well as it did; plenty of TeamFortress-playing Quake fans were led to believe that the new version, TFC, would come with Half-Life. They were initially disappointed at having to wait awhile before it was released in mod form, but in the meantime they got to see that Half-Life itself was a game worth playing.

The site(i don't know if it still does now) said if any company was intrested in boxing this up, he'd be intrested. Not exactly the same thing, but it makes you think.
From what I remember, Flayra stated that he has no plans to port ns to the HL2 engine.
He said that there are plans to bring out a NS Retail. Then we would have to buy it but it would be pure NS not running on sum HL engine...
But unless NS is owned by Valve, I believe it will always show up as a 3rd Party App. Which makes sense.

Probably asked the wrong question.
Not porting to HL2 doesn't surprise me, what WOULD surprise me was if there were no plans to make a new mod(NS2!) for HL2.
Yes, even HAMBONE has told me this before.
Unless Valve is making it so it can only be on "MyGames" listing if you sell your soul, which would suck.

Couldn't be more clear.
I was one of those players :> Quake TF was my thang, back when I had a 28.8 modem =P so I moved up to TFC in the HL era... then moved over to Action HL, and here I am now...
it will be nice to see NS officially supported by Steam... and I can't wait for the next big hit by the famous Charlie Cleveland =P

Yep, what made you think that Forlorn?
http://www.unknownworlds.com
That's straight from the Unknown Wolrds website, Flayra's new company. NS 1.0-3.0 will always remain free, but will ALSO be sold retail. Like Counter-strike: if you have Half-life, downloading the mod is completely free. If you buy NS retail, consider it buying Half-life with NS already included with the package (at the expense of HL single player).
As for showing up in "My Games" on steam, that's probably the first step, before retail and before NS2. I don't think that Flay would like to sell the rights, but that may be the only way to get the official "Steamage" and the updates rolling in normally. We'll just have to wait and see.
As for NS2, nobody said that it had to be on HL2. I personally feel that it would be the soundest choice, but Flayra knows what he's doing. I feel that it's going to be either HL2 or an engine that was engineered for this sort of hybrid game.

I totally know what you are talking about. I've often wondered why people just stopped playing. I would have thought that NS 3.0 with combat and everything would only draw MORE people, epecially from games like CS and other FPS.
:-/ As for my opinion with NS and HL2? Well yes, we all know that HL2 is an amazing engine to mod for games... but the question is, will putting NS on HL2 just drive MORE people away, since their PII 450 MHZ pcs won't work with it
Although, I am drooling in anticipation to see what NS could look like on HL2, with the graphics and all.

My personal opinion on this.
The somewhat slow development cycle.
I am not complaining, however when 1.04 was out and they were working on 1.1, I lost interest in playing 1.04 because I wanted to play with all the changes they were making for 1.1. Especially since they were posting all of the changes being made.
I stopped playing NS for a while, until 2.0 came out, then I started back up again. Then it started again, the waiting for the next patch, waiting for the next change, the balance fix's, etc...
When 3.0 Beta Private was released I almost lapsed back into the stage as I did with 1.04, then I got in on the beta testing and I have been playing.
However there are still bugs to be worked out, and it seems that at the moment no one is listening to the public. If you want people to stay then you have to let them know that you hear them. Meaning update the front page, post what your working on, something to let us know that they are still out there working at making the best game possible.
I am not saying that there PR is bad, it is just non-existent right now, and that means that people (like me) look at the site for updates, but don't play, because of the experience's they have had with the current build.
That is IMHO.

If you actually checked your steam user agreement before you signed it you would realise that ANY content made for a VALVe game is their property, thats why if they ask to buy it off you, you say yes, otherwise you end up losing money.
But I'm not flaming Valve, don't get me wrong. They are a great company and have made an amazing game. It just seems of late... well they've hit a slump.
