"Lovecraftian" is what I thought when I saw these. For those who don't know, H.P. Lovecraft was a big creative influence for H.R. Giger, who designed the original Alien creature. I like these as initial concepts, although I'm not too sure about the onos, I've been kicking about an idea for a while, seeing it as more like a graboid from Tremors or a sandworm from Dune... although not quite as big...
Since the Blood thread in the IS forum got locked I thought maybe we could make something out of this one instead. Has anyone given some new thoughts to the concepts back on page 2? I really like the skulk, the gorge and the onos, but I'm a bit more sceptical about that lerk (argh, it hovars without flapping!!) and the fade. First off, as I stated, I don't like things that "hovars" as they make no sence, the lerk needs wings. The spacebar is for flapping, not farting . Second, the fade, how is that thing supposed to move?
Gorge is the best imo but the Fade needs to be a little more, erm, powerful looking. It looks quite thin.
I like your idea and if these were made into replacement models I would have to quit my job to play NS full-time
I don't care if Flayra is a sissy, I want those sketches modelled, skinned, animated and placed ingame!
(No offense, Flayra ).
I want to be scared. The Aliens replacement worked well on that, but not by much anymore. It was mainly because the game is damn dark (if running ResetGamma), and so are the Aliens.
And, this is where the story ends?

I'll repeat the descriptions I gave (which don't nesassarily have to be that way) on how the fade n' lerk would move:
lerk: would sorta 'waver' the lower 'wing-like' skin extensions it has... waver, like those green one-eyed tentacled aliens that appear on The Simpsons... gittit? wavering is the key concept here... it'd be like a sort of "anti-gravity" ability this particular lifeform has...
fade: true that it looks "skinny", as someone else said... but considering that it has no face and is sorta "slimy-smooth", the idea was to have it be "mysteriously menacing", see?... (ooooooo... mysterious! )
Remember though, folks, that these are concepts... meaning that whoever would model them could alter, add, subtract or redesign whatever aspect you want... for example: I didn't "infest" these creatures... add some festation textures and maybe they'd be more NS acceptable-like... I also avoided adding too many spikes n' stuff, actually made 'em "smoother"-like to reflect the concept I have that they're mostly just conglomerations of bacterium forming a specific "shape"...
man... if only...
I've created the skeleton for the Skulk, using 10 bones. I reckoned that the Skulk would not have much body movement except for its three legs and its jaw, since it's basically a mouth that skitters around.
Now, what I need to know is, do I need one bone or two bones for its jaw? I've looked at the original Skulk, and there's a bone leading to its jaw, and it looks like it's needed for the biting animation, but why only one?

read cohen and stewarts "What Does a Martian Look Like?: The Science of Extraterrestrial Life" and you will see where i get my ideas from. tis a good read
the ns aliens are all parochials of earth, so no alien would look like them, but jointed legs of various numbers are universal, as several areas of our animal kingdom thing have evolved them independatly. so therefor his ideas are probably a lot more 'real' than the current karaa, but they could have legs for a believable appearance. (not real, a bit different, they may be really able to move that fast if we met those theoretical aliens, but we wouldnt believe it). i like the idea of the gorge just having a hole for a mouth, how do we know aliens have teeth, or a one way digestive system. also i like the removal of 2 eyes placed terrestrially, especially as they are stupid, what do they do if the vision is in the mouth? Flying with wings is also a universal though, as mammals, birds, and insects, all evolved it independatly, so yes the hovering is just silly. oh and btw i also was really confused by the gorges tentricle things, they look really big, promenant, wriggling around, in 1st person, but they are tiny in 3rd.
well... I see this has stirred more interest than I hoped... interesting...
woot: you've grasped the concept...
Fury: I like yer version of the skulk... if it wuz skinned n' released, I'd use it happily as replacement, I swear! nevertheless, check out the sketch I made, for some small details that'd make it cooler, like the back leg which goes UP, then down...
man, too bad I can't model n' don't have the time to learn, either...
but some o' you do! so, go ahead! make more! make! let's give NS a more "freaky/menacing" atmosphere! let's make players want to be aliens!
caca id take a wack at these but im HORRIBLE at organics and just characters give me a gun and ill do it any day but aliens and humans youll end up with real bad stick figures from me
I'd love it if someone turned these sketches into custom models for NS, these creatures would certainly be very alien. Reminds me of the movie and game "The Thing".

The good thing about them is that they are alien, not freakish animals.
